²¹ “People have heard my groaning,^(A)
    but there is no one to comfort me.^(B)
All my enemies have heard of my distress;
    they rejoice^(C) at what you have done.
May you bring the day^(D) you have announced
    so they may become like me.

⁸ Jerusalem has sinned^(A) greatly
    and so has become unclean.^(B)
All who honored her despise her,
    for they have all seen her naked;^(C)
she herself groans^(D)
    and turns away.

¹⁵ All who pass your way
    clap their hands at you;^(A)
they scoff^(B) and shake their heads^(C)
    at Daughter Jerusalem:^(D)
“Is this the city that was called
    the perfection of beauty,^(E)
    the joy of the whole earth?”^(F)

²² “Let all their wickedness come before you;
    deal with them
as you have dealt with me
    because of all my sins.^(A)
My groans^(B) are many
    and my heart is faint.”

¹⁶ “This is why I weep
    and my eyes overflow with tears.^(A)
No one is near to comfort^(B) me,
    no one to restore my spirit.
My children are destitute
    because the enemy has prevailed.”^(C)

¹¹ “Because you rejoice and are glad,
    you who pillage my inheritance,^(A)
because you frolic like a heifer^(B) threshing grain
    and neigh like stallions,

²¹ Rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom,
    you who live in the land of Uz.^(A)
But to you also the cup^(B) will be passed;
    you will be drunk and stripped naked.^(C)

²² Your punishment will end, Daughter Zion;^(D)
    he will not prolong your exile.
But he will punish your sin, Daughter Edom,
    and expose your wickedness.^(E)

⁴ The roads to Zion mourn,^(A)
    for no one comes to her appointed festivals.
All her gateways are desolate,^(B)
    her priests groan,
her young women grieve,
    and she is in bitter anguish.^(C)

² Bitterly she weeps^(A) at night,
    tears are on her cheeks.
Among all her lovers^(B)
    there is no one to comfort her.
All her friends have betrayed^(C) her;
    they have become her enemies.^(D)
