Judges 8:4-9
New American Standard Bible
4 Then Gideon and the three hundred men who were with him came (A)to the Jordan and crossed over, exhausted yet still pursuing. 5 And he said to the men of (B)Succoth, “Please give loaves of bread to the people who are [a]following me, for they are exhausted, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.” 6 But the leaders of Succoth said, “[b](C)Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?” 7 So Gideon said, “For this answer, (D)when the Lord has handed over to me Zebah and Zalmunna, I will [c]thrash your [d]bodies with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.” 8 Then he went up from there to [e](E)Penuel and spoke similarly to them; and the men of Penuel answered him just as the men of Succoth had answered. 9 So he said also to the men of [f]Penuel, “When I return safely, (F)I will tear down this tower.”

4 Then Gideon came to the Jordan, crossing it with the three hundred men who were with him, weary and pursuing. 5 He said to the men of Succoth, “Please give loaves of bread to the people who are following me,[a] for they are weary, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.” 6 The officials of Succoth said, “Is the hand[b] of Zebah and Zalmunna in your hand now, that we should give bread to your army?” 7 Gideon said, “Well then, when Yahweh gives Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will trample your flesh with the thorns and briers of the wilderness.” 8 He went from there to Penuel, and he spoke similarly to them; and the men of Penuel answered him just as the men of Succoth answered. 9 And he said also to the men of Penuel, saying, “When I return safely,[c] I will tear down this tower.”
