The End of an Era

When Joshua dismissed[a] the people, the Israelites went to their allotted portions of territory,[b] intending to take possession of the land. The people worshiped[c] the Lord throughout Joshua’s lifetime and as long as the elderly men[d] who outlived him remained alive. These men had witnessed[e] all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.[f] Joshua son of Nun, the Lord’s servant, died at the age of 110. The people[g] buried him in his allotted land[h] in Timnath Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 10 That entire generation passed away;[i] a new generation grew up[j] that had not personally experienced the Lord’s presence or seen what he had done for Israel.[k]

Joshua’s Death

Previously, when Joshua had sent the people away, the Israelites had gone to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance.(A) The people worshiped the Lord throughout Joshua’s lifetime and during the lifetimes of the elders who outlived Joshua. They had seen all the Lord’s great works(B) he had done for Israel.

Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110. They buried him in the territory of his inheritance, in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim,(C) north of Mount Gaash. 10 That whole generation was also gathered to their ancestors. After them another generation rose up who did not know the Lord(D) or the works he had done for Israel.
