⁴ His father-in-law, the woman’s father, prevailed on him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking,^(A) and sleeping there.

³ Wash,^(A) put on perfume,^(B) and get dressed in your best clothes.^(C) Then go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.^(D)

⁹ Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.^(A)

¹¹ Uriah said to David, “The ark^(A) and Israel and Judah are staying in tents,^[a] and my commander Joab and my lord’s men are camped in the open country. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and make love^(B) to my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!”

¹⁵ So I commend the enjoyment of life^(A), because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink^(B) and be glad.^(C) Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.
