⁶ I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel’s inheritance,^(A) because they committed this lewd and outrageous act^(B) in Israel.

²⁹ When he reached home, he took a knife^(A) and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.^(B)

²³ The owner of the house went outside^(A) and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing.^(B)

¹⁵ Whoever is caught with the devoted things^(A) shall be destroyed by fire,^(B) along with all that belongs to him.^(C) He has violated the covenant^(D) of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!’”^(E)

⁷ Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked^(A) and furious,^(B) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in^[a] Israel^(C) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.^(D)

¹⁰ We’ll take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred from a thousand, and a thousand from ten thousand, to get provisions for the army. Then, when the army arrives at Gibeah^[a] in Benjamin, it can give them what they deserve for this outrageous act done in Israel.”

¹² “No, my brother!” she said to him. “Don’t force me! Such a thing should not be done in Israel!^(A) Don’t do this wicked thing.^{(B) 13} What about me?^(C) Where could I get rid of my disgrace? And what about you? You would be like one of the wicked fools in Israel. Please speak to the king; he will not keep me from being married to you.”
