Greeting

Jude, a servant[a] of Jesus Christ and brother of James,

(A)To those who are called, (B)beloved in God the Father and (C)kept for[b] Jesus Christ:

May (D)mercy, (E)peace, and love be multiplied to you.

Judgment on False Teachers

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our (F)common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you (G)to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. For (H)certain people (I)have crept in unnoticed (J)who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert (K)the grace of our God into sensuality and (L)deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Now I want (M)to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that (N)Jesus, who saved[c] a people out of the land of Egypt, (O)afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And (P)the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— just as (Q)Sodom and Gomorrah and (R)the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and (S)pursued unnatural desire,[d] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and (T)blaspheme the glorious ones. But when (U)the archangel (V)Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing (W)about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, (X)“The Lord rebuke you.” 10 (Y)But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11 Woe to them! For they walked in (Z)the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain (AA)to Balaam's error and (AB)perished in Korah's rebellion. 12 These are hidden reefs[e] (AC)at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, (AD)shepherds feeding themselves; (AE)waterless clouds, (AF)swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, (AG)uprooted; 13 (AH)wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of (AI)their own shame; (AJ)wandering stars, (AK)for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.

14 It was also about these that Enoch, (AL)the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, (AM)“Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 (AN)to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have (AO)committed in such an ungodly way, and of all (AP)the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents, (AQ)following their own sinful desires; (AR)they are loud-mouthed boasters, (AS)showing favoritism to gain advantage.

A Call to Persevere

17 But you must (AT)remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They[f] said to you, (AU)“In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, (AV)devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, (AW)building yourselves up in your most holy faith and (AX)praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 (AY)keep yourselves in the love of God, (AZ)waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by (BA)snatching them out of (BB)the fire; to others show mercy (BC)with fear, hating even (BD)the garment[g] stained by the flesh.

Doxology

24 (BE)Now to him who is able (BF)to keep you from stumbling and (BG)to present you (BH)blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, 25 to (BI)the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, (BJ)be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time[h] and now and forever. Amen.

Prologue

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God (BK)gave him (BL)to show to his servants[i] the things that must soon take place. (BM)He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, (BN)who bore witness to the word of God and to (BO)the testimony of Jesus Christ, even (BP)to all that he saw. (BQ)Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, (BR)for the time is near.

Greeting to the Seven Churches

John to the seven churches that are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from (BS)him (BT)who is and (BU)who was and who is to come, and from (BV)the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ (BW)the faithful witness, (BX)the firstborn of the dead, and (BY)the ruler of kings on earth.

To (BZ)him who loves us and (CA)has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us (CB)a kingdom, (CC)priests to (CD)his God and Father, to him be (CE)glory and (CF)dominion forever and ever. Amen. Behold, (CG)he is coming with the clouds, and (CH)every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail[j] on account of him. Even so. Amen.

(CI)“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, (CJ)“who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Vision of the Son of Man

I, John, your brother and (CK)partner in (CL)the tribulation and (CM)the kingdom and (CN)the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos (CO)on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 (CP)I was in the Spirit (CQ)on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice (CR)like a trumpet 11 saying, (CS)“Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”

12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw (CT)seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands (CU)one like (CV)a son of man, (CW)clothed with a long robe and (CX)with a golden sash around his chest. 14 (CY)The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. (CZ)His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 (DA)his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and (DB)his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 (DC)In his right hand he held seven stars, (DD)from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and (DE)his face was like the sun shining (DF)in full strength.

17 (DG)When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But (DH)he laid his right hand on me, (DI)saying, “Fear not, (DJ)I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. (DK)I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and (DL)I have the keys of Death and Hades. 19 (DM)Write therefore (DN)the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this. 20 As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and (DO)the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and (DP)the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

To the Church in Ephesus

“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of (DQ)him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, (DR)who walks among the seven golden lampstands.

(DS)“‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but (DT)have tested those (DU)who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up (DV)for my name's sake, and you (DW)have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned (DX)the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do (DY)the works you did at first. If not, (DZ)I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. Yet this you have: you hate the works of (EA)the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. (EB)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. (EC)To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of (ED)the tree of life, which is in (EE)the paradise of God.’

To the Church in Smyrna

“And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of (EF)the first and the last, (EG)who died and came to life.

“‘I know your tribulation and (EH)your poverty ((EI)but you are rich) and the slander[k] of (EJ)those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, (EK)that you may be tested, and for (EL)ten days (EM)you will have tribulation. (EN)Be faithful (EO)unto death, and I will give you (EP)the crown of life. 11 (EQ)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. (ER)The one who conquers will not be hurt by (ES)the second death.’

To the Church in Pergamum

12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of him who has (ET)the sharp two-edged sword.

13 “‘I know where you dwell, (EU)where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not (EV)deny my faith[l] even in the days of Antipas (EW)my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of (EX)Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might (EY)eat food sacrificed to idols and (EZ)practice sexual immorality. 15 So also you have some who hold the teaching of (FA)the Nicolaitans. 16 Therefore repent. If not, (FB)I will come to you soon and (FC)war against them with (FD)the sword of my mouth. 17 (FE)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. (FF)To the one who conquers I will give some of (FG)the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with (FH)a new name written on the stone (FI)that no one knows except the one who receives it.’

To the Church in Thyatira

18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, (FJ)who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

19 (FK)“‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. 20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman (FL)Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants (FM)to practice sexual immorality and (FN)to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, but (FO)she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, 23 and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he (FP)who searches mind and heart, and (FQ)I will give to each of you according to your works. 24 But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call (FR)the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I (FS)do not lay on you any other burden. 25 Only hold fast (FT)what you have until I come. 26 (FU)The one who conquers and who keeps my works (FV)until the end, (FW)to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and (FX)he will (FY)rule[m] them with a rod of iron, (FZ)as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 And I will give him (GA)the morning star. 29 (GB)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

To the Church in Sardis

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him (GC)who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

“‘I know your works. You have the reputation (GD)of being alive, (GE)but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works (GF)complete in the sight of my God. (GG)Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, (GH)I will come (GI)like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not (GJ)soiled their garments, and they will walk with me (GK)in white, for they are (GL)worthy. (GM)The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never (GN)blot his name out of (GO)the book of life. (GP)I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. (GQ)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

To the Church in Philadelphia

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of (GR)the holy one, (GS)the true one, (GT)who has the key of David, (GU)who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

“‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you (GV)an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Behold, I will make those of (GW)the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, (GX)I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that (GY)I have loved you. 10 (GZ)Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try (HA)those who dwell on the earth. 11 (HB)I am coming soon. (HC)Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize (HD)your crown. 12 (HE)The one who conquers, I will make him (HF)a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him (HG)the name of my God, and (HH)the name of the city of my God, (HI)the new Jerusalem, (HJ)which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own (HK)new name. 13 (HL)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

To the Church in Laodicea

14 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the (HM)Amen, (HN)the faithful and true witness, (HO)the beginning of God's creation.

15 “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. (HP)Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 (HQ)For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, (HR)blind, and naked. 18 I counsel you (HS)to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and (HT)white garments so that you may clothe yourself and (HU)the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, (HV)so that you may see. 19 (HW)Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and (HX)knock. (HY)If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, (HZ)I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 21 (IA)The one who conquers, (IB)I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as (IC)I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 (ID)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

The Throne in Heaven

After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me (IE)like a trumpet, said, (IF)“Come up here, and (IG)I will show you what must take place after this.” At once (IH)I was in the Spirit, and behold, (II)a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. And he who sat there had the appearance of (IJ)jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was (IK)a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. Around the throne were (IL)twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, (IM)clothed in white garments, with (IN)golden crowns on their heads. From the throne came (IO)flashes of lightning, and rumblings[n] and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning (IP)seven torches of fire, (IQ)which are the seven spirits of God, and before the throne there was (IR)as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.

And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are (IS)four living creatures, (IT)full of eyes in front and behind: (IU)the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. And the four living creatures, (IV)each of them with six wings, are (IW)full of eyes all around and within, and (IX)day and night they never cease to say,

(IY)“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,
(IZ)who was and is and is to come!”

And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, (JA)who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders (JB)fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast (JC)their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 (JD)“Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for (JE)you created all things,
and (JF)by your will they existed and were created.”

The Scroll and the Lamb

Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne (JG)a scroll written within and on the back, (JH)sealed with seven seals. And (JI)I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, (JJ)the Lion (JK)of the tribe of Judah, (JL)the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw (JM)a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with (JN)seven eyes, which are (JO)the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders (JP)fell down before the Lamb, (JQ)each holding a harp, and (JR)golden bowls full of incense, (JS)which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang (JT)a new song, saying,

“Worthy are you to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
for (JU)you were slain, and by your blood (JV)you ransomed people for God
from (JW)every tribe and language and people and nation,
10 and you have made them (JX)a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering (JY)myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice,

(JZ)“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!”

13 And I heard (KA)every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

14 And the four living creatures (KB)said, “Amen!” and the elders (KC)fell down and worshiped.

The Seven Seals

Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of (KD)the seven seals, and I heard (KE)one of the four living creatures say (KF)with a voice like thunder, (KG)“Come!” And I looked, and behold, (KH)a white horse! And (KI)its rider had a bow, and (KJ)a crown was given to him, and he came out (KK)conquering, and to conquer.

When he opened the second seal, I heard (KL)the second living creature say, “Come!” And out came another horse, (KM)bright red. Its rider was permitted (KN)to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.

When he opened the third seal, I heard the (KO)third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, (KP)a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, (KQ)“A quart[o] of wheat for a denarius,[p] and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and (KR)do not harm the oil and wine!”

When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of (KS)the fourth living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, (KT)a pale horse! And its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill (KU)with sword and with famine and with pestilence and (KV)by wild beasts of the earth.

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under (KW)the altar (KX)the souls of those who had been slain (KY)for the word of God and for (KZ)the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, (LA)holy and true, (LB)how long (LC)before you will judge and (LD)avenge our blood on (LE)those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then they were each given (LF)a white robe and (LG)told to rest a little longer, (LH)until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers[q] (LI)should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

12 When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, (LJ)there was a great earthquake, and (LK)the sun became black as (LL)sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, 13 and (LM)the stars of the sky fell to the earth (LN)as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. 14 (LO)The sky vanished (LP)like a scroll that is being rolled up, and (LQ)every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave[r] and free, (LR)hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 16 (LS)calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of (LT)him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for (LU)the great day of their wrath has come, and (LV)who can stand?”

The 144,000 of Israel Sealed

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back (LW)the four winds of the earth, (LX)that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. Then I saw another angel ascending (LY)from the rising of the sun, with (LZ)the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, saying, (MA)“Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God (MB)on their foreheads.” And (MC)I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:

12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed,
12,000 from the tribe of Reuben,
12,000 from the tribe of Gad,
12,000 from the tribe of Asher,
12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali,
12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh,
12,000 from the tribe of Simeon,
12,000 from the tribe of Levi,
12,000 from the tribe of Issachar,
12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun,
12,000 from the tribe of Joseph,
12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed.

A Great Multitude from Every Nation

After this I looked, and behold, (MD)a great multitude that no one could number, (ME)from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, (MF)clothed in white robes, with (MG)palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, (MH)“Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and (MI)the four living creatures, and they (MJ)fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 (MK)saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, (ML)clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of (MM)the great tribulation. (MN)They have washed their robes and (MO)made them white (MP)in the blood of the Lamb.

15 “Therefore they are before the throne of God,
    and (MQ)serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne (MR)will shelter them with his presence.
16 (MS)They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
(MT)the sun shall not strike them,
    nor any scorching heat.
17 For the Lamb in the midst of the throne (MU)will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of (MV)living water,
and (MW)God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When the Lamb opened (MX)the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Then I saw the seven angels (MY)who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. And another angel came and stood (MZ)at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with (NA)the prayers of all the saints on (NB)the golden altar before the throne, and (NC)the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. Then the angel took the censer and (ND)filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and (NE)there were peals of (NF)thunder, rumblings,[s] flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

The Seven Trumpets

Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.

The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed (NG)hail and (NH)fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a (NI)third of the earth was burned up, and a third of (NJ)the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like (NK)a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea (NL)became blood. A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of (NM)the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel blew his trumpet, and (NN)a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on (NO)the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood.[t] A third of the waters (NP)became wormwood, and many people died from the water, (NQ)because it had been made bitter.

12 The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of (NR)the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night.

13 Then I looked, and I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice as it flew directly overhead, (NS)“Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth, at the blasts of the other trumpets that the three angels are about to blow!”

And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and (NT)I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given (NU)the key to the shaft of (NV)the bottomless pit.[u] He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft (NW)rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and (NX)the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. Then from the smoke came (NY)locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. They were told (NZ)not to harm (OA)the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have (OB)the seal of God on their foreheads. They were allowed to torment them (OC)for five months, but not to kill them, and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings someone. And in those days (OD)people will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them.

(OE)In appearance the locusts were like horses prepared for battle: (OF)on their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were (OG)like human faces, their hair like women's hair, and (OH)their teeth like lions' teeth; they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the noise of their wings was (OI)like the noise of many chariots with (OJ)horses rushing into battle. 10 They have tails and stings like scorpions, and their power to hurt people (OK)for five months is in their tails. 11 They have (OL)as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is (OM)Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.[v]

12 (ON)The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still to come.

13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from (OO)the four horns of the golden altar before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release (OP)the four angels who are bound at (OQ)the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released (OR)to kill a third of mankind. 16 The number of (OS)mounted troops was (OT)twice ten thousand times ten thousand; (OU)I heard their number. 17 And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphire[w] and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were (OV)like lions' heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound.

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (OW)did not repent of (OX)the works of their hands nor give up worshiping (OY)demons (OZ)and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, 21 nor did they repent of their murders or their (PA)sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with (PB)a rainbow over his head, and (PC)his face was like the sun, and (PD)his legs like pillars of fire. (PE)He had a little scroll open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea, and his left foot on the land, and called out with a loud voice, (PF)like a lion roaring. When he called out, the seven thunders sounded. And when the seven thunders had sounded, I was about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven saying, (PG)“Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.” And the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land (PH)raised his right hand to heaven and swore by (PI)him who lives forever and ever, (PJ)who created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it, that there would be no more delay, but that (PK)in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel, the mystery of God would be fulfilled, (PL)just as he announced to his servants the prophets.

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, “Go, take the scroll that is open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll. And he said to me, (PM)“Take and (PN)eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” 10 And I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it. It was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it my stomach was made bitter. 11 And I was told, (PO)“You must again prophesy about many peoples and nations and languages and kings.”

The Two Witnesses

11 Then I was given (PP)a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure (PQ)the court outside the temple; leave that out, for (PR)it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for (PS)forty-two months. And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for (PT)1,260 days, (PU)clothed in sackcloth.”

These are (PV)the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. And if anyone would harm them, (PW)fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes. If anyone would harm them, (PX)this is how he is doomed to be killed. They have the power (PY)to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and (PZ)to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire. And when they have finished their testimony, (QA)the beast that rises from (QB)the bottomless pit[x] (QC)will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically[y] is called (QD)Sodom and (QE)Egypt, where their Lord was crucified. For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and (QF)refuse to let them be placed in a tomb, 10 and (QG)those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and (QH)exchange presents, because these two prophets (QI)had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth. 11 But after the three and a half days (QJ)a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, (QK)“Come up here!” And (QL)they went up to heaven (QM)in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. 13 And at that hour there was (QN)a great earthquake, and (QO)a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and (QP)gave glory to (QQ)the God of heaven.

14 (QR)The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is soon to come.

The Seventh Trumpet

15 Then (QS)the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and (QT)there were loud voices in heaven, saying, (QU)“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of (QV)his Christ, and (QW)he shall reign forever and ever.” 16 And the twenty-four elders (QX)who sit on their thrones before God (QY)fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying,

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
    (QZ)who is and who was,
for you have taken your great power
    and (RA)begun to reign.
18 The nations raged,
    but (RB)your wrath came,
and (RC)the time for the dead to be judged,
and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints,
and (RD)those who fear your name,
    both small and great,
and (RE)for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”

19 Then (RF)God's temple in heaven was opened, and (RG)the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings,[z] peals of thunder, an earthquake, and (RH)heavy hail.

The Woman and the Dragon

12 And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman (RI)clothed with (RJ)the sun, with (RK)the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and (RL)was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great (RM)red dragon, (RN)with seven heads and (RO)ten horns, and on his heads (RP)seven diadems. His tail swept down (RQ)a third of the stars of heaven and (RR)cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child (RS)he might devour it. She gave birth to a male child, (RT)one who is to rule[aa] all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was (RU)caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for (RV)1,260 days.

Satan Thrown Down to Earth

Now war arose in heaven, (RW)Michael and (RX)his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And (RY)the great dragon was thrown down, (RZ)that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, (SA)the deceiver of the whole world—(SB)he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now (SC)the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers[ab] has been thrown down, (SD)who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And (SE)they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for (SF)they loved not their lives (SG)even unto death. 12 Therefore, (SH)rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But (SI)woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because (SJ)he knows that his time is short!”

13 And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued (SK)the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two (SL)wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent (SM)into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished (SN)for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 The serpent poured water (SO)like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. 17 Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off (SP)to make war on the rest of (SQ)her offspring, (SR)on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to (SS)the testimony of Jesus. And he stood[ac] on the sand of the sea.

The First Beast

13 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, (ST)with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and (SU)blasphemous names on its heads. And the beast that I saw was (SV)like a leopard; its feet were like (SW)a bear's, and its mouth was like (SX)a lion's mouth. And to it (SY)the dragon gave his power and (SZ)his throne and great authority. One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and (TA)the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, (TB)“Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?”

And the beast was given (TC)a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for (TD)forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling,[ad] that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also it was allowed (TE)to make war on the saints and to conquer them.[ae] And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, and all (TF)who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in (TG)the book of life of (TH)the Lamb (TI)who was slain. (TJ)If anyone has an ear, let him hear:

10 (TK)If anyone is to be taken captive,
    to captivity he goes;
(TL)if anyone is to be slain with the sword,
with the sword must he be slain.

(TM)Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.

The Second Beast

11 Then (TN)I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence,[af] and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, (TO)whose mortal wound was healed. 13 (TP)It performs great signs, even (TQ)making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, 14 and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of[ag] the beast (TR)it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast (TS)that was wounded by the sword and yet lived.
