La victoria sobre los amorreos
10 Adonisédec, el rey de Jerusalén, tuvo mucho miedo cuando supo que Josué había tomado y destruido Ai, y que había hecho con ella y con su rey lo mismo que antes había hecho con Jericó y su rey, y que los gabaonitas habían hecho la paz con los israelitas y ahora vivían entre ellos. Esto último le causó mucho miedo, pues Gabaón era una ciudad importante, más grande que Ai y comparable a las gobernadas por un rey, y los gabaonitas eran valientes. 3 Por esta razón Adonisédec les mandó el siguiente mensaje a los reyes Hoham de Hebrón, Piram de Jarmut, Jafía de Laquis, y Debir de Eglón: 4 «Vengan acá y ayúdenme a pelear contra Gabaón, pues ha hecho un pacto con Josué y los israelitas.» 5 Así que los cinco reyes amorreos, o sea los reyes de Jerusalén, Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglón, se juntaron y marcharon con sus ejércitos para acampar ante Gabaón y atacarla.
6 Por su parte, los que vivían en Gabaón le mandaron este mensaje a Josué, que estaba en el campamento de Guilgal: «No se niegue usted a ayudar a sus servidores. Venga pronto a ayudarnos y defendernos, pues todos los reyes amorreos de las montañas se han unido para atacarnos.» 7 Entonces Josué salió de Guilgal con todo su ejército de valientes, 8 y el Señor le dijo: «No les tengas miedo, porque yo voy a entregártelos, y ninguno de ellos va a poder hacerte frente.»
9 Josué salió de Guilgal y, avanzando por la noche, atacó por sorpresa a los amorreos. 10 El Señor hizo que ellos se asustaran mucho ante los israelitas, y así Josué mató a muchísimos en Gabaón. Después los persiguió por el camino de Bet-horón, y siguió matando amorreos hasta Azecá y Maquedá. 11 Al bajar los amorreos la cuesta de Bet-horón, mientras huían de los israelitas, el Señor soltó sobre ellos grandes piedras de granizo, que mataron más amorreos que las espadas de los israelitas.
12 Cuando el Señor entregó a los amorreos en manos de los israelitas, Josué le habló al Señor delante del pueblo y dijo:
«Párate, sol, en Gabaón;
párate, luna, en el valle de Aialón.»
13 Y el sol y la luna se detuvieron
hasta que el pueblo se vengó del enemigo.
Esto es lo que dice el Libro del Justo. El sol se detuvo en medio del cielo, y por casi un día entero no se puso. 14 Ni antes ni después ha habido otro día como aquel en que el Señor escuchó la voz de un hombre, pues el Señor peleaba a favor de Israel.
15 Después Josué y los israelitas volvieron al campamento de Guilgal, 16 y los cinco reyes huyeron y se escondieron en una cueva en Maquedá. 17 Pero más tarde fueron hallados en esa cueva, y así se lo dijeron a Josué. 18 Entonces Josué dio las siguientes órdenes: «Rueden piedras hasta la entrada de la cueva y tápenla, y pongan guardias a la entrada para que los vigilen. 19 Mientras tanto, no se detengan ustedes aquí. Vayan tras el enemigo y atáquenlo por la retaguardia. No los dejen regresar a sus ciudades, porque el Señor y Dios de ustedes los ha entregado en sus manos.»
20 Después que Josué y los israelitas derrotaron por completo a los amorreos, matando a muchísimos de ellos, los amorreos que quedaron con vida se refugiaron en sus ciudades. 21 Pero el pueblo israelita regresó sano y salvo al campamento de Maquedá, donde estaba Josué. Y nadie se atrevía a hablar mal de los israelitas.
22 Entonces Josué dijo: «Destapen la entrada de la cueva y saquen a los cinco reyes.» 23 Así lo hicieron los israelitas, y sacaron de la cueva a los reyes de Jerusalén, Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglón. 24 Cuando los trajeron ante Josué, él llamó a todos los hombres de Israel, y dijo a los jefes militares que estaban con él: «Acérquense y pongan el pie sobre el cuello de estos reyes.» Ellos lo hicieron así, 25 y entonces Josué les dijo: «No tengan miedo ni se desanimen; al contrario, tengan valor y firmeza, porque esto mismo hará el Señor con todos los enemigos de ustedes.»
26 Después Josué mató a los reyes y mandó que colgaran a cada uno de un árbol, y allí los dejaron hasta el atardecer. 27 Cuando ya el sol se iba a poner, mandó Josué que los bajaran de los árboles y los echaran en la misma cueva en que se habían escondido. Después taparon la entrada de la cueva con unas piedras enormes que, por cierto, todavía están allí.
Otras conquistas
28 Ese mismo día, Josué tomó la ciudad de Maquedá y la destruyó por completo; mató a filo de espada a todos los que vivían en ella, y no dejó a nadie con vida. Hizo con el rey de Maquedá lo mismo que había hecho con el de Jericó.
29 De allí, Josué y los israelitas se fueron a la ciudad de Libná y la atacaron. 30 El Señor les entregó también esta ciudad y su rey. No quedó nada ni nadie con vida, e hizo con el rey de Libná lo mismo que con el de Jericó.
31 Después Josué y los israelitas se fueron de Libná a Laquis, y acamparon ante la ciudad y la atacaron. 32 Al segundo día, el Señor les entregó Laquis y, como en Libná, los israelitas mataron a filo de espada a todas las personas y los animales que vivían allí. 33 Horam, el rey de Guézer, salió con su ejército a defender Laquis, pero Josué lo derrotó y no dejó a nadie con vida.
34 Después de Laquis, Josué y los israelitas fueron a la ciudad de Eglón, acamparon ante ella y la atacaron. 35 Ese mismo día la tomaron, y mataron a filo de espada a todos los que vivían allí, destruyéndolos por completo como habían hecho con Laquis.
36 De Eglón siguieron a la ciudad de Hebrón, y la atacaron. 37 Cuando la tomaron, la destruyeron por completo y mataron a filo de espada al rey y a todas las personas y los animales que vivían allí y en los pueblos vecinos, tal como lo habían hecho en Eglón.
38 De allí, Josué y los israelitas se dirigieron a la ciudad de Debir y la atacaron, 39 matando a filo de espada a su rey y a los habitantes de los pueblos vecinos. Ni un solo habitante de Debir quedó con vida; todos fueron aniquilados, tal como lo habían hecho con Hebrón y Libná y con sus reyes.
40 Así pues, Josué conquistó toda la región. Derrotó a los reyes de las montañas, del Négueb, de los llanos y de las cuestas. Lo destruyó todo y los mató a todos; no quedó nada, ni dejó vivo a nadie, tal y como el Señor, el Dios de Israel, se lo había ordenado. 41-42 De una sola vez derrotó a los reyes y conquistó todos sus territorios entre Cadés-barnea y Gaza, y toda la región de Gosen hasta la ciudad de Gabaón, porque el Señor, el Dios de Israel, peleaba en favor de los israelitas. 43 Después Josué volvió al campamento de Guilgal con todos los israelitas.

The Sun Stands Still
10 Now Adoni-Zedek(A) king of Jerusalem(B) heard that Joshua had taken Ai(C) and totally destroyed[a](D) it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon(E) had made a treaty of peace(F) with Israel and had become their allies. 2 He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron,(G) Piram king of Jarmuth,(H) Japhia king of Lachish(I) and Debir(J) king of Eglon.(K) 4 “Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace(L) with Joshua and the Israelites.”
5 Then the five kings(M) of the Amorites(N)—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it.
6 The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal:(O) “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army,(P) including all the best fighting men. 8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid(Q) of them; I have given them into your hand.(R) Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”(S)
9 After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10 The Lord threw them into confusion(T) before Israel,(U) so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon.(V) Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon(W) and cut them down all the way to Azekah(X) and Makkedah.(Y) 11 As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones(Z) down on them,(AA) and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.
12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites(AB) over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.(AC)”
13 So the sun stood still,(AD)
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on[b] its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.(AE)
The sun stopped(AF) in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting(AG) for Israel!
15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(AH)
Five Amorite Kings Killed
16 Now the five kings had fled(AI) and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, 18 he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. 19 But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”
20 So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely,(AJ) but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.(AK) 21 The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites.
22 Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they had brought these kings(AL) to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet(AM) on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet(AN) on their necks.
25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous.(AO) This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” 26 Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening.
27 At sunset(AP) Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day.(AQ)
Southern Cities Conquered
28 That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors.(AR) And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.(AS)
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah(AT) and attacked it. 30 The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish;(AU) he took up positions against it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer(AV) had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon;(AW) they took up positions against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron(AX) and attacked it. 37 They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone(AY) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir.(AZ) 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.(BA)
40 So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,(BB) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,(BC) together with all their kings.(BD) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.(BE) 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea(BF) to Gaza(BG) and from the whole region of Goshen(BH) to Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought(BI) for Israel.
43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(BJ)
