Five Amorite Kings Executed

16 These five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at (A)Makkedah. 17 And it was told to Joshua, “The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.” 18 And Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave and set men by it to guard them, 19 but do not stay there yourselves. Pursue your enemies; (B)attack their rear guard. Do not let them enter their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.” 20 When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a great blow (C)until they were wiped out, and when the remnant that remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, 21 then all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. (D)Not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel.

22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.” 23 And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24 And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, “Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” Then they came near and put their feet on their necks. 25 And Joshua said to them, (E)“Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. (F)For thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” 26 And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And (G)they hung on the trees until evening. 27 But at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and (H)they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.

28 As for (I)Makkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah (J)just as he had done to the king of Jericho.

Conquest of Southern Canaan

29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to (K)Libnah and fought against Libnah. 30 And the Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king (L)as he had done to the king of Jericho.

31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to (M)Lachish and laid siege to it and fought against it. 32 And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.

33 Then Horam king of (N)Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining.

34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to (O)Eglon. And they laid siege to it and fought against it. 35 And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lachish.

36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to (P)Hebron. And they fought against it 37 and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and devoted it to destruction and every person in it.

38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to (Q)Debir and fought against it 39 and he captured it with its king and all its towns. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king.

40 So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland (R)and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, (S)but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded. 41 And Joshua struck them from (T)Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of (U)Goshen, as far as Gibeon. 42 And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, (V)because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 (W)Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

Conquests in Northern Canaan

11 When Jabin, king of Hazor, heard of this, he (X)sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, and to the kings who were in the northern hill country, and in the (Y)Arabah south of (Z)Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and (AA)in Naphoth-dor on the (AB)west, to the Canaanites in the east and the west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the (AC)Jebusites in the hill country, and the (AD)Hivites under (AE)Hermon in the land of (AF)Mizpah. And they came out with all their troops, a great horde, in number (AG)like the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. And all these kings joined their forces and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

And the Lord said to Joshua, (AH)“Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will give over all of them, slain, to Israel. You shall (AI)hamstring their horses and burn their (AJ)chariots with fire.” So Joshua and all his warriors came (AK)suddenly against them by the waters of Merom and fell upon them. And the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them and chased them as far as (AL)Great Sidon and (AM)Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of (AN)Mizpeh. And they struck them until he left none remaining. And Joshua did to them (AO)just as the Lord said to him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

10 And Joshua turned back at that time and captured (AP)Hazor and struck its king with the sword, for Hazor formerly was the head of all those kingdoms. 11 And they struck with the sword all who were in it, devoting them to destruction;[a] (AQ)there was none left that breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire. 12 And all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua captured, and struck them with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction, (AR)just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. 13 But none of the cities that stood on mounds did Israel burn, except Hazor alone; that Joshua burned. 14 And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the people of Israel took for their plunder. But every person they struck with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they did not leave any who breathed. 15 (AS)Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, (AT)so Moses commanded Joshua, (AU)and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

16 So Joshua took all that land, (AV)the hill country and all the Negeb and (AW)all the land of Goshen (AX)and the lowland (AY)and the Arabah (AZ)and the hill country of Israel and its lowland 17 (BA)from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as (BB)Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below (BC)Mount Hermon. And he captured (BD)all their kings and struck them and put them to death. 18 Joshua made war (BE)a long time with all those kings. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the people of Israel except (BF)the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took them all in battle. 20 For it was the Lord's doing (BG)to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, (BH)just as the Lord commanded Moses.

21 And Joshua came at that time and cut off (BI)the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction with their cities. 22 There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, (BJ)in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, (BK)according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses. (BL)And Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel (BM)according to their tribal allotments. And the land had rest from war.

Five Amorite Kings Killed

16 Now the five kings had fled(A) and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, 18 he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. 19 But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”

20 So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely,(B) but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.(C) 21 The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites.

22 Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they had brought these kings(D) to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet(E) on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet(F) on their necks.

25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous.(G) This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” 26 Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening.

27 At sunset(H) Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day.(I)

Southern Cities Conquered

28 That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors.(J) And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.(K)

29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah(L) and attacked it. 30 The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.

31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish;(M) he took up positions against it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer(N) had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.

34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon;(O) they took up positions against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.

36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron(P) and attacked it. 37 They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone(Q) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.

38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir.(R) 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.(S)

40 So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,(T) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,(U) together with all their kings.(V) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.(W) 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea(X) to Gaza(Y) and from the whole region of Goshen(Z) to Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought(AA) for Israel.

43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(AB)

Northern Kings Defeated

11 When Jabin(AC) king of Hazor(AD) heard of this, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the kings of Shimron(AE) and Akshaph,(AF) and to the northern kings who were in the mountains, in the Arabah(AG) south of Kinnereth,(AH) in the western foothills and in Naphoth Dor(AI) on the west; to the Canaanites in the east and west; to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites(AJ) and Jebusites in the hill country;(AK) and to the Hivites(AL) below Hermon(AM) in the region of Mizpah.(AN) They came out with all their troops and a large number of horses and chariots—a huge army, as numerous as the sand on the seashore.(AO) All these kings joined forces(AP) and made camp together at the Waters of Merom(AQ) to fight against Israel.

The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand(AR) all of them, slain, over to Israel. You are to hamstring(AS) their horses and burn their chariots.”(AT)

So Joshua and his whole army came against them suddenly at the Waters of Merom and attacked them, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel. They defeated them and pursued them all the way to Greater Sidon,(AU) to Misrephoth Maim,(AV) and to the Valley of Mizpah on the east, until no survivors were left. Joshua did to them as the Lord had directed: He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.

10 At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword.(AW) (Hazor had been the head of all these kingdoms.) 11 Everyone in it they put to the sword. They totally destroyed[a] them,(AX) not sparing anyone that breathed,(AY) and he burned(AZ) Hazor itself.

12 Joshua took all these royal cities and their kings and put them to the sword. He totally destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.(BA) 13 Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds—except Hazor, which Joshua burned. 14 The Israelites carried off for themselves all the plunder and livestock of these cities, but all the people they put to the sword until they completely destroyed them, not sparing anyone that breathed.(BB) 15 As the Lord commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.(BC)

16 So Joshua took this entire land: the hill country,(BD) all the Negev,(BE) the whole region of Goshen, the western foothills,(BF) the Arabah and the mountains of Israel with their foothills, 17 from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir,(BG) to Baal Gad(BH) in the Valley of Lebanon(BI) below Mount Hermon.(BJ) He captured all their kings and put them to death.(BK) 18 Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time. 19 Except for the Hivites(BL) living in Gibeon,(BM) not one city made a treaty of peace(BN) with the Israelites, who took them all in battle. 20 For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts(BO) to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.(BP)

21 At that time Joshua went and destroyed the Anakites(BQ) from the hill country: from Hebron, Debir(BR) and Anab,(BS) from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua totally destroyed them and their towns. 22 No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza,(BT) Gath(BU) and Ashdod(BV) did any survive.

23 So Joshua took the entire land,(BW) just as the Lord had directed Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance(BX) to Israel according to their tribal divisions.(BY) Then the land had rest(BZ) from war.(CA)
