Joshua’s Conquest of Southern Canaan

29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to (A)Libnah, and fought against Libnah. 30 And the Lord also handed it over to Israel, with its king, and he struck it and every person who was in it with the edge of the sword. He left no survivor in it. So he did to its king just as he had done to the king of Jericho.

31 And Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to Lachish, and they camped by it and fought against it. 32 And the Lord handed Lachish over to Israel; and he captured it on the second day, and struck it and every person who was in it with the edge of the sword, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

33 Then Horam king of (B)Gezer came up to help Lachish, and Joshua [a]defeated him and his people until he had left him no survivor.

34 And Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to Eglon, and they camped by it and fought against it. 35 They captured it on that day and struck it with the edge of the sword; and he [b]utterly destroyed on that day every person who was in it, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to (C)Hebron, and they fought against it. 37 And they captured it and struck it and its king and all its cities and all the persons who were in it with the edge of the sword. He left no survivor, according to all that he had done to Eglon. And he [c]utterly destroyed it and every person who was in it.

38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him returned to (D)Debir, and they fought against it. 39 He captured it and its king and all its cities, and they struck them with the edge of the sword, and [d]utterly destroyed every person who was in it. He left no survivor. Just as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king, as he had also done to Libnah and its king.

40 So Joshua struck all the land, (E)the hill country and the [e]Negev and the lowland and the slopes, and (F)all their kings. He left no survivor, but (G)he [f]utterly destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded. 41 Joshua struck them from Kadesh-barnea even as far as Gaza, and all the country of (H)Goshen even as far as Gibeon. 42 Joshua captured all these kings and their lands at one time, because (I)the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel. 43 So Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp [g]at Gilgal.

Northern Canaan Taken

11 Then it came about, when Jabin king of (J)Hazor heard about it, that he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph, and to the kings who were of the north in the hill country, and in the (K)Arabah—south of [h]Chinneroth and in the lowland, and on the [i]heights of Dor on the west— to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill country, and (L)the Hivite [j]at the foot of (M)Hermon in the land of (N)Mizpeh. Then they came out, they and all their armies with them, (O)as many people as the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. So all of these kings gathered together, and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.

Yet the Lord said to Joshua, “(P)Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow at this time I am going to turn all of them over to Israel as good as dead; you shall (Q)hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.” So Joshua and all the people of war with him came upon them suddenly at the waters of Merom, and attacked them. And the Lord handed them over to Israel, so that they [k]defeated them, and pursued them as far as Great Sidon, and (R)Misrephoth-maim, and the Valley of (S)Mizpeh to the east; and they struck them until no survivor was left to them. And Joshua did to them just as the Lord had told him; he (T)hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

10 Then Joshua turned back at that time and captured (U)Hazor, and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor previously was the head of all these kingdoms. 11 (V)They struck every person who was in it with the edge of the sword, [l]utterly destroying them; there was no one left who breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire. 12 Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, and all their kings; and he struck them with the edge of the sword and utterly destroyed them, just (W)as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. 13 However, Israel did not burn any cities that stood on their mounds, except Hazor alone, which Joshua burned. 14 And (X)all the spoils of these cities and the cattle, the sons of Israel took as their plunder; but they struck every person with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them. They left no one breathing. 15 Just as the Lord had commanded His servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah(A) and attacked it. 30 The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.

31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish;(B) he took up positions against it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer(C) had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.

34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon;(D) they took up positions against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.

36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron(E) and attacked it. 37 They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone(F) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.

38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir.(G) 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.(H)

40 So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,(I) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,(J) together with all their kings.(K) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.(L) 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea(M) to Gaza(N) and from the whole region of Goshen(O) to Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought(P) for Israel.

43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(Q)

Northern Kings Defeated

11 When Jabin(R) king of Hazor(S) heard of this, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the kings of Shimron(T) and Akshaph,(U) and to the northern kings who were in the mountains, in the Arabah(V) south of Kinnereth,(W) in the western foothills and in Naphoth Dor(X) on the west; to the Canaanites in the east and west; to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites(Y) and Jebusites in the hill country;(Z) and to the Hivites(AA) below Hermon(AB) in the region of Mizpah.(AC) They came out with all their troops and a large number of horses and chariots—a huge army, as numerous as the sand on the seashore.(AD) All these kings joined forces(AE) and made camp together at the Waters of Merom(AF) to fight against Israel.

The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand(AG) all of them, slain, over to Israel. You are to hamstring(AH) their horses and burn their chariots.”(AI)

So Joshua and his whole army came against them suddenly at the Waters of Merom and attacked them, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel. They defeated them and pursued them all the way to Greater Sidon,(AJ) to Misrephoth Maim,(AK) and to the Valley of Mizpah on the east, until no survivors were left. Joshua did to them as the Lord had directed: He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.

10 At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword.(AL) (Hazor had been the head of all these kingdoms.) 11 Everyone in it they put to the sword. They totally destroyed[a] them,(AM) not sparing anyone that breathed,(AN) and he burned(AO) Hazor itself.

12 Joshua took all these royal cities and their kings and put them to the sword. He totally destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.(AP) 13 Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds—except Hazor, which Joshua burned. 14 The Israelites carried off for themselves all the plunder and livestock of these cities, but all the people they put to the sword until they completely destroyed them, not sparing anyone that breathed.(AQ) 15 As the Lord commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.(AR)
