^10 (A)And they did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day and have become forced laborers.

^29 (A)Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

¹⁶ (Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and taken Gezer and burned it with fire, ^(A)had killed the Canaanites who dwelt in the city, and had given it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife.)

¹³ And it happened, when the children of Israel grew strong, that they put the Canaanites to ^(A)forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.

7 “When the Lord your God brings you into the land which you go to ^(B)possess, and has cast out many ^(C)nations before you, ^(D)the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you, ² and when the Lord your God delivers ^(E)them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. ^(F)You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them.

²¹ that is, their descendants ^(A)who were left in the land after them, ^(B)whom the children of Israel had not been able to destroy completely—^(C)from these Solomon raised ^(D)forced labor, as it is to this day.

⁶³ As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, ^(A)the children of Judah could not drive them out; ^(B)but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

^52 (A)then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all their molded images, and demolish all their ^[a]high places; ⁵³ you shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land and dwell in it, for I have given you the land to ^(B)possess. ⁵⁴ And ^(C)you shall divide the land by lot as an inheritance among your families; to the larger you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller you shall give a smaller inheritance; there everyone’s inheritance shall be whatever falls to him by lot. You shall inherit according to the tribes of your fathers. ⁵⁵ But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it shall be that those whom you let remain shall be ^(D)irritants in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall harass you in the land where you dwell.
