⁷ Now, therefore, divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”

²³ As for the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west, Benjamin, one portion.^{(A) 24} Adjoining the territory of Benjamin, from the east side to the west, Simeon, one portion.^{(B) 25} Adjoining the territory of Simeon, from the east side to the west, Issachar, one portion.^{(C) 26} Adjoining the territory of Issachar, from the east side to the west, Zebulun, one portion.^{(D) 27} Adjoining the territory of Zebulun, from the east side to the west, Gad, one portion.^{(E) 28} And adjoining the territory of Gad to the south, the boundary shall run from Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh, from there along the Wadi of Egypt^[a] to the Great Sea.^{(F) 29} This is the land that you shall allot as an inheritance among the tribes of Israel, and these are their portions, says the Lord God.^(G)

The New Boundaries of the Land

¹³ Thus says the Lord God: These are the boundaries by which you shall divide the land for inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph shall have two portions.^{(A) 14} You shall divide it equally; I swore to give it to your ancestors, and this land shall fall to you as your inheritance.^(B)

¹⁵ This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side, from the Great Sea by way of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath and on to Zedad,^{[a](C) 16} Berothah, Sibraim (which lies between the border of Damascus and the border of Hamath), as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran.^{(D) 17} So the boundary shall run from the sea to Hazar-enon, which is north of the border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north.^[b] This shall be the north side.^(E)

¹⁸ On the east side, between Hauran and Damascus; along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel; to the eastern sea and as far as Tamar.^[c] This shall be the east side.^(F)

¹⁹ On the south side, it shall run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribath-kadesh, from there along the Wadi of Egypt^[d] to the Great Sea. This shall be the south side.^(G)

²⁰ On the west side, the Great Sea shall be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo-hamath. This shall be the west side.^(H)

²¹ So you shall divide this land among you according to the tribes of Israel. ²² You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the aliens who reside among you and have fathered children among you. They shall be to you as native-born of Israel; with you they shall be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.^{(I) 23} In whatever tribe aliens reside, there you shall assign them their inheritance, says the Lord God.

⁵⁴ You shall apportion the land by lot according to your clans; to a large one you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small one you shall give a small inheritance; the inheritance shall belong to the person on whom the lot falls; according to your ancestral tribes you shall apportion it.^(A)

² the Gadites and the Reubenites came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying, ³ “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon— ⁴ the land that the Lord subdued before the congregation of Israel—is a land for cattle, and your servants have cattle.” ⁵ They continued, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession; do not make us cross the Jordan.”

⁶ But Moses said to the Gadites and to the Reubenites, “Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here? ⁷ Why will you discourage the hearts of the Israelites from going over into the land that the Lord has given them?^{(A) 8} Your fathers did this, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.^{(B) 9} When they went up to the Wadi Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the hearts of the Israelites from going into the land that the Lord had given them. ¹⁰ The Lord’s anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying,^{(C) 11} ‘Surely none of the people who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and up, shall see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not unreservedly followed me^(D)— ¹² none except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they have unreservedly followed the Lord.’^{(E) 13} And the Lord’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord had disappeared.^{(F) 14} And now you, a brood of sinners, have risen in place of your fathers, to increase the Lord’s fierce anger against Israel!

⁵³ “To these the land shall be apportioned for inheritance according to the number of names.^{(A) 54} To a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance; every tribe shall be given its inheritance according to its enrollment.^{(B) 55} But the land shall be apportioned by lot; according to the names of their ancestral tribes they shall inherit.^{(C) 56} Their inheritance shall be apportioned according to lot between the larger and the smaller.”
