¹⁰ When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented^(A) and did not bring on them the destruction^(B) he had threatened.^(C)

⁸ and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent^(A) and not inflict on it the disaster^(B) I had planned.

⁶ So the Lord relented.^(A)

“This will not happen either,” the Sovereign Lord said.^(B)

²⁰ So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.^(A)

²⁷ When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth^(A) and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly.^(B)

²⁸ Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite: ²⁹ “Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled^(C) himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day,^(D) but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son.”^(E)

¹⁴ Then the Lord relented^(A) and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

³² The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah;^(A) and now something greater than Jonah is here.

³ So the Lord relented.^(A)

“This will not happen,” the Lord said.^(B)
