¹² “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”^(A)

¹⁷ David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd,^[a] have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep.^(A) What have they done? Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family,^(B) but do not let this plague remain on your people.”

¹¹ If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts^(A) to those who ask him!

³⁵ But love your enemies, do good to them,^(A) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children^(B) of the Most High,^(C) because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

¹⁹ “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.

²¹ After they had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: “Men, you should have taken my advice^(A) not to sail from Crete;^(B) then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss. ²² But now I urge you to keep up your courage,^(C) because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. ²³ Last night an angel^(D) of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve^(E) stood beside me^{(F) 24} and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar;^(G) and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.’^{(H) 25} So keep up your courage,^(I) men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.^{(J) 26} Nevertheless, we must run aground^(K) on some island.”^(L)

⁴ But when the kindness^(A) and love of God our Savior^(B) appeared,^{(C) 5} he saved us,^(D) not because of righteous things we had done,^(E) but because of his mercy.^(F) He saved us through the washing^(G) of rebirth and renewal^(H) by the Holy Spirit, ⁶ whom he poured out on us^(I) generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ so that, having been justified by his grace,^(J) we might become heirs^(K) having the hope^(L) of eternal life.^(M)

¹⁷ Every good and perfect gift is from above,^(A) coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,^(B) who does not change^(C) like shifting shadows.
