Take Life as It Comes

All this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God; whether it is love or hate one does not know. Everything that confronts them is vanity,[a] since the same fate comes to all, to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil,[b] to the clean and the unclean, to those who sacrifice and those who do not sacrifice. As are the good, so are the sinners; those who swear are like those who shun an oath.(A)

Job’s Friends Are Humiliated

After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite: “My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.(A)

Is not your wickedness great?
    There is no end to your iniquities.(A)
For you have exacted pledges from your family for no reason
    and stripped the naked of their clothing.(B)
You have given no water to the weary to drink,
    and you have withheld bread from the hungry.(C)
The powerful possess the land,
    and the favored live in it.
You have sent widows away empty-handed,
    and the arms of the orphans you have crushed.[a](D)
10 Therefore snares are around you,
    and sudden terror overwhelms you,
11 or darkness so that you cannot see;
    a flood of water covers you.(E)

12 “Is not God high in the heavens?
    See the highest stars, how lofty they are!
13 Therefore you say, ‘What does God know?
    Can he judge through the deep darkness?(F)
14 Thick clouds enwrap him, so that he does not see,
    and he walks on the dome of heaven.’
15 Will you keep to the old way
    that the wicked have trod?
16 They were snatched away before their time;
    their foundation was washed away by a flood.(G)
17 They said to God, ‘Leave us alone,’
    and ‘What can the Almighty[b] do to us?’[c]
18 Yet he filled their houses with good things—
    but the plans of the wicked are repugnant to me.(H)
19 The righteous see it and are glad;
    the innocent laugh them to scorn,(I)
20 saying, ‘Surely our adversaries are cut off,
    and what they left, the fire has consumed.’(J)

21 “Agree with God,[d] and be at peace;
    in this way good will come to you.(K)
22 Receive instruction from his mouth,
    and lay up his words in your heart.(L)
23 If you return to the Almighty,[e] you will be restored,
    if you remove unrighteousness from your tents,(M)
24 if you treat gold like dust
    and gold of Ophir like the stones of the torrent bed,(N)
25 and if the Almighty[f] is your gold
    and your precious silver,(O)
26 then you will delight yourself in the Almighty[g]
    and lift up your face to God.(P)
27 You will pray to him, and he will hear you,
    and you will pay your vows.(Q)
28 You will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you,
    and light will shine on your ways.(R)
29 When others are humiliated, you say it is pride,
    for he saves the humble.(S)
30 He will deliver even those who are guilty;
    they will escape because of the cleanness of your hands.”[h](T)

11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, but if you do not, then believe[a] because of the works themselves.(A) 12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

The Lord said to the accuser,[a] “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. He still persists in his integrity, although you incited me against him, to destroy him for no reason.”(A) Then the accuser[b] answered the Lord, “Skin for skin! All that the man has he will give for his life. But stretch out your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.”(B) The Lord said to the accuser,[c] “Very well, he is in your power; only spare his life.”(C)
