⁵ Now ^(A)in the Law, Moses commanded us ^(B)to stone such women. So what do you say?”

Punishments for Sexual Immorality

¹⁰ “If a ^(A)man commits adultery with the wife of^[a] his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

²¹ then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father's house, and ^(A)the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has ^(B)done an outrageous thing in Israel by whoring in her father's house. ^(C)So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

^22 (D)“If a man is found lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman. ^(E)So you shall purge the evil from Israel.

²³ “If there is a ^(F)betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her, ²⁴ then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor's wife. ^(G)So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

^38 (A)And I will judge you ^(B)as women who commit adultery and ^(C)shed blood are judged, and bring upon you the blood of wrath and jealousy. ³⁹ And I will give you into their hands, and they shall throw down your ^(D)vaulted chamber and break down ^(E)your lofty places. ^(F)They shall strip you of your clothes and take ^(G)your beautiful jewels and leave you ^(H)naked and bare. ^40 (I)They shall bring up a crowd against you, ^(J)and they shall stone you and cut you to pieces with their swords.

⁶ So they are no longer two but one flesh. ^(A)What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” ⁷ They said to him, ^(B)“Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” ⁸ He said to them, “Because of your ^(C)hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

^17 (A)“Do not think that I have come to abolish ^(B)the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but ^(C)to fulfill them.

¹⁶ And they sent ^(A)their disciples to him, along with ^(B)the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, ^(C)we know that you are true and teach ^(D)the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for ^(E)you are not swayed by appearances.^{[a] 17} Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay ^(F)taxes to ^(G)Caesar, or not?” ¹⁸ But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why ^(H)put me to the test, you hypocrites?

^47 (A)And the host shall stone them and cut them down with their swords. ^(B)They shall kill their sons and their daughters, and ^(C)burn up their houses.
