Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are

³¹ To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,^(A) you are really my disciples.

⁹ Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ^(A) does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.^(B)

⁴ Remain in me, as I also remain in you.^(A) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

⁵ “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;^(B) apart from me you can do nothing. ⁶ If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.^{(C) 7} If you remain in me^(D) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.^{(E) 8} This is to my Father’s glory,^(F) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.^(G)

⁹ “As the Father has loved me,^(H) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.

¹⁴ But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,^(A)

¹⁶ Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save^(A) both yourself and your hearers.

²³ if you continue^(A) in your faith, established^(B) and firm, and do not move from the hope^(C) held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven,^(D) and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.^(E)

⁶⁶ From this time many of his disciples^(A) turned back and no longer followed him.

⁶⁷ “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.^(B)

⁶⁸ Simon Peter answered him,^(C) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.^{(D) 69} We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”^(E)

⁷⁰ Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,^(F) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”^{(G) 71} (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,^(H) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)^(I)

¹⁴ If you fear^(A) the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel^(B) against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good!

¹⁴ We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold^(A) our original conviction firmly to the very end.^(B)
