¹⁹ When they had rowed about three or four miles,^[a] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.

⁴⁷ And when ^(A)evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. ⁴⁸ And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about ^(B)the fourth watch of the night^[a] he came to them, walking on the sea. ^(C)He meant to pass by them, ⁴⁹ but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out,

²⁵ And ^(A)in the fourth watch of the night^[a] he came to them, walking on the sea. ²⁶ But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, ^(B)they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear.

¹⁸ “I will not leave you as orphans; ^(A)I will come to you.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

³⁶ As they were talking about these things, ^(A)Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” ³⁷ But they were ^(B)startled and ^(C)frightened and ^(D)thought they saw a spirit. ³⁸ And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. ^(E)Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”

¹³ Nevertheless, the men rowed hard^[a] to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.
