The Authority of the Son

¹⁹ So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(A)the Son ^(B)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father^[a] does, that the Son does likewise.

⁴⁹ For ^(A)I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father ^(B)who sent me has himself given me ^(C)a commandment—what to say and what to speak.

²⁸ So Jesus said to them, “When you have ^(A)lifted up the Son of Man, ^(B)then you will know that ^(C)I am he, and that ^(D)I do nothing on my own authority, but ^(E)speak just as the Father taught me.

¹⁰ Do you not believe that ^(A)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you ^(B)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

^18 (A)No one takes it from me, but ^(B)I lay it down ^(C)of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and ^(D)I have authority to take it up again. ^(E)This charge I have received from my Father.”

²⁸ Do not marvel at this, for ^(A)an hour is coming when ^(B)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice ²⁹ and come out, ^(C)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Witnesses to Jesus

^30 (D)“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and ^(E)my judgment is just, because ^(F)I seek not my own will ^(G)but the will of him who sent me.

¹¹ If the Spirit of ^(A)him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus^[a] from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies ^(B)through his Spirit who dwells in you.

⁴ We must ^(A)work the works of him who sent me ^(B)while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.

¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another ^(A)Helper,^[a] to be with you forever, ¹⁷ even ^(B)the Spirit of truth, ^(C)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and ^(D)will be^[b] in you.

¹⁸ “I will not leave you as orphans; ^(E)I will come to you. ^19 (F)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but ^(G)you will see me. ^(H)Because I live, you also will live. ^20 (I)In that day you will know that ^(J)I am in my Father, and ^(K)you in me, and ^(L)I in you. ^21 (M)Whoever has my commandments and ^(N)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And ^(O)he who loves me ^(P)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and ^(Q)manifest myself to him.” ^22 (R)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it ^(S)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” ²³ Jesus answered him, ^(T)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and ^(U)we will come to him and ^(V)make our home with him.
