⁶ What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

The Works of the Flesh

¹⁶ Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh.^{(A) 17} For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want.^{(B) 18} But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law.^{(C) 19} Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery,^{(D) 20} idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, ²¹ envy,^[a] drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.^(E)

⁴ so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.^{[a](A) 5} For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit^[b] set their minds on the things of the Spirit.^{[c](B) 6} To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit^[d] is life and peace.^{(C) 7} For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed, it cannot,^{(D) 8} and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

⁹ But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit,^[e] since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.^(E)

²⁶ A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you, and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.^{(A) 27} I will put my spirit within you and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances.^(B)

¹⁷ So if anyone is in Christ, there^[a] is a new creation: everything old has passed away; look, new things have come into being!^[b](A)

³ All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, doing the will of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else,^(A)

⁴⁷ The first man was from the earth, made of dust; the second man is^[a] from heaven.^{(A) 48} As one of dust, so are those who are of the dust, and as one of heaven, so are those who are of heaven. ⁴⁹ Just as we have borne the image of the one of dust, we will^[b] also bear the image of the one of heaven.^(B)

⁵⁰ What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.^(C)

¹⁷ But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.^(A)
