¹⁴ Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,^(A) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,^[a](B)

⁷ The people came to Moses^(A) and said, “We sinned^(B) when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord^(C) will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed^(D) for the people.

⁸ The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole;^(E) anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” ⁹ So Moses made a bronze snake^(F) and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.^(G)

²⁸ So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up^[a] the Son of Man,^(A) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.^(B)

³² And I, when I am lifted up^[a] from the earth,^(A) will draw all people to myself.”^{(B) 33} He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.^(C)

³⁴ The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law^(D) that the Messiah will remain forever,^(E) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man^(F) must be lifted up’?^(G) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

⁴⁴ He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:^(A) Everything must be fulfilled^(B) that is written about me in the Law of Moses,^(C) the Prophets^(D) and the Psalms.”^(E)

⁴⁵ Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. ⁴⁶ He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer^(F) and rise from the dead on the third day,^(G)

²³ This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;^(A) and you, with the help of wicked men,^[a] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.^(B)

²⁶ Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”^{(A) 27} And beginning with Moses^(B) and all the Prophets,^(C) he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.^(D)

⁵⁴ But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled^(A) that say it must happen in this way?”
