²² When Jesus said this, one of the officials^(A) nearby slapped him in the face.^(B) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

² At this the high priest Ananias^(A) ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth.^{(B) 3} Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall!^(C) You sit there to judge me according to the law, yet you yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck!”^(D)

⁴ Those who were standing near Paul said, “How dare you insult God’s high priest!”

⁵ Paul replied, “Brothers, I did not realize that he was the high priest; for it is written: ‘Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.’^[a]”^(E)

³ and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”^(A) And they slapped him in the face.^(B)

³ So Judas came to the garden, guiding^(A) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.^(B) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

The Guards Mock Jesus^(A)

⁶³ The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. ⁶⁴ They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?”

⁶⁵ Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.^(A)

⁶⁷ Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.^(A) Others slapped him ⁶⁸ and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”^(B)

A Promised Ruler From Bethlehem

² he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten^(A) and put in the stocks^(B) at the Upper Gate of Benjamin^(C) at the Lord’s temple.
