¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate^(A) to help you and be with you forever—

¹⁷ the Spirit of truth.^(A) The world cannot accept him,^(B) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be^[a] in you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

²⁶ “When the Advocate^(A) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father^(B)—the Spirit of truth^(C) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.^(D)

⁷ But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate^(A) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.^{(B) 8} When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹ about sin,^(C) because people do not believe in me; ¹⁰ about righteousness,^(D) because I am going to the Father,^(E) where you can see me no longer; ¹¹ and about judgment, because the prince of this world^(F) now stands condemned.

¹² “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.^{(G) 13} But when he, the Spirit of truth,^(H) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.^(I) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. ¹⁴ He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. ¹⁵ All that belongs to the Father is mine.^(J) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

³ Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan^(A) has so filled your heart^(B) that you have lied to the Holy Spirit^(C) and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?^(D)

⁴ Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal?^(A) What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”^(B)

⁹ You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh^(A) but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.^(B) And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,^(C) they do not belong to Christ.

²⁶ In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit^(A) himself intercedes for us^(B) through wordless groans.

²⁷ And he who searches our hearts^(A) knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes^(B) for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
