²⁶ Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,^(A) the son of Simon Iscariot.

²³ Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.^(A)

¹⁹ They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

²⁰ “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.^(A)

⁷⁰ Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,^(A) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”^{(B) 71} (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,^(C) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)^(D)

²¹ But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.^(A)

³⁰ As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.^(A)

⁴ But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him,^(A) objected, ⁵ “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.^[a]” ⁶ He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag,^(B) he used to help himself to what was put into it.
