John 13:31-36 The Message (MSG)

A New Command

31-32 When he had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is seen for who he is, and God seen for who he is in him. The moment God is seen in him, God’s glory will be on display. In glorifying him, he himself is glorified—glory all around!

33 “Children, I am with you for only a short time longer. You are going to look high and low for me. But just as I told the Jews, I’m telling you: ‘Where I go, you are not able to come.’

34-35 “Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other.”

36 Simon Peter asked, “Master, just where are you going?”

Jesus answered, “You can’t now follow me where I’m going. You will follow later.”

John 13:31-36 The Passion Translation (TPT)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31 After Judas left the room, Jesus said, “The time has come for the glory of God to surround the Son of Man, and God will be greatly glorified through what happens to me.[a] 32 And very soon God will unveil the glory of the Son of Man.[b]

33 “My dear friends,[c] I only have a brief time left to be with you. And then you will search and long for me. But I tell you what I told the Jewish leaders: you’ll not be able to come where I am.[d]

34 “So I give you now a new[e] commandment: Love each other just as much as I have loved you. 35 For when you demonstrate the same love I have for you by loving one another, everyone will know that you’re my true followers.”

36 Peter interjected, “But, Master, where are you going?”

Jesus replied, “Where I am going you won’t be able to follow, but one day you will follow me there.”

  1. John 13:31 Or “The Son of Man was glorified and the Father was glorified by him.”
  2. John 13:32 Or “Since God is glorified in him (the Son of Man) God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him immediately.” The Greek text has the word doxazo (“glory” or “honor”) five times in vv. 31–32. This repetition would mean that it speaks of more than simply honor. It is the clear statement of the exchange of glory between God and his Son, Jesus Christ.
  3. John 13:33 Or “children.”
  4. John 13:33 See John 7:33-34.
  5. John 13:34 Jesus sets a new standard of love before his followers. Although the Old Testament does instruct us to love one another (Lev. 19:18, 34; Deut. 10:18), Jesus now gives the commandment to use his standard of love for us as the true measurement of love as we care for one another.

John 13:31-36 Disciples’ Literal New Testament (DLNT)

Then Jesus Says, Now God Was Glorified In Me. And He Will Yet Glorify Me

31 Then when he went out, Jesus says, “Now[a] the Son of Man was glorified[b], and God was glorified in Him. 32 If God was[c] glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself— and will glorify Him immediately.

Where I Am Going You Cannot Come. Love One Another As I Have Loved You

33 “Little-children, I am with you a little longer. You will seek Me, and just as I told the Jews that where I am going, you are not able to come, I also tell you now. 34 I am giving you a new commandment— that you be loving one another; just as I loved you, that you also be loving one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are disciples to Me: if you are having love in-the-case-of [d] one another”.

Peter Asks Why He Can’t Come. You Will Follow Later, But Deny Me Tonight

36 Simon Peter says to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going, you are not able to follow Me now. But you will follow later”.

  1. John 13:31 In sending out Judas, Jesus has set in motion the hour of His death. He speaks as if it were already all finished.
  2. John 13:31 That is, in voluntarily entering His hour of death; or, prophetically, in His death.
  3. John 13:32 was glorified... will glorify. That is, in His life... in His death; or prophetically, in His death... in His resurrection.
  4. John 13:35 Or, among; in-connection-with.
