²⁶ but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.^(A)

⁴⁷ Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.^(A) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

³ And even if our gospel^(A) is veiled,^(B) it is veiled to those who are perishing.^{(C) 4} The god^(D) of this age^(E) has blinded^(F) the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ,^(G) who is the image of God.^(H)

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews

³⁷ Even after Jesus had performed so many signs^(A) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. ³⁸ This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:

³⁹ For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

²⁷ My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,^(A) and they follow me.^(B)

⁶⁵ He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”^(A)

⁶ We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us.^(A) This is how we recognize the Spirit^[a] of truth^(B) and the spirit of falsehood.^(C)

⁷ What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain.^(A) The elect among them did, but the others were hardened,^{(B) 8} as it is written:

⁴ When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.^(A)
