⁹ The true light^(A) that gives light to everyone^(B) was coming into the world.

⁴⁶ I have come into the world as a light,^(A) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

⁸ Yet I am writing you a new command;^(A) its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing^(B) and the true light^(C) is already shining.^(D)

⁴ In him was life,^(A) and that life was the light^(B) of all mankind.

⁷ He came as a witness to testify^(A) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.^(B)

⁴ But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness^(A) so that this day should surprise you like a thief.^{(B) 5} You are all children of the light^(C) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. ⁶ So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,^(D) but let us be awake^(E) and sober.^{(F) 7} For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.^(G)

²⁰ We know also that the Son of God has come^(A) and has given us understanding,^(B) so that we may know him who is true.^(C) And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.^(D)

⁶ Jesus answered, “I am^(A) the way^(B) and the truth^(C) and the life.^(D) No one comes to the Father except through me.^(E)
