³¹ I myself did not know him, but ^(A)for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”

3 ^(A)“Behold, I send ^(B)my messenger, and ^(C)he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord ^(D)whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and ^(E)the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.

¹⁷ and ^(A)he will go before him ^(B)in the spirit and power of Elijah, ^(C)to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and ^(D)the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, ^(E)to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”

³³ I myself did not know him, but ^(A)he who sent me to baptize ^(B)with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, ^(C)this is he who baptizes ^(D)with the Holy Spirit.’

⁷ He came as a ^(A)witness, to bear witness about the light, ^(B)that all might believe through him.

³ And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming ^(A)a baptism of repentance ^(B)for the forgiveness of sins. ⁴ As it is written in ^(C)the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

^4 (C)John appeared, baptizing in ^(D)the wilderness and proclaiming ^(E)a baptism of ^(F)repentance ^(G)for the forgiveness of sins. ⁵ And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, ^(H)confessing their sins.

² But for you ^(A)who fear my name, ^(B)the sun ^(C)of righteousness shall rise ^(D)with healing in its wings. You shall go out ^(E)leaping like calves from the stall. ³ And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, ^(F)on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.

^4 (G)“Remember ^(H)the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules^[a] that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

^5 (I)“Behold, I will send you ^(J)Elijah the prophet ^(K)before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
