²⁸ This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

⁴⁰ He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing earlier, and he remained there.

²³ John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim because water was abundant there, and people kept coming and were being baptized.

²⁴ Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters against them, as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they seized the waters as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan.^(A)

²⁶ They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing, and all are going to him.”^(A)
