²¹ They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”^(A)

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”^(B)

He answered, “No.”

⁵ “See, I will send the prophet Elijah^(A) to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.^(B)

¹⁴ And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.^(A)

¹⁵ The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites.^(A) You must listen to him. ¹⁶ For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”^(B)

¹⁷ The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. ¹⁸ I will raise up for them a prophet^(C) like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words^(D) in his mouth.^(E) He will tell them everything I command him.^(F)

²⁵ questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

¹⁴ They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;^(A) others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”^(B)

⁴⁰ On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”^(A)

¹⁰ The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

¹¹ Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.^{(A) 12} But I tell you, Elijah has already come,^(B) and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished.^(C) In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer^(D) at their hands.”

¹⁷ And he will go on before the Lord,^(A) in the spirit and power of Elijah,^(B) to turn the hearts of the parents to their children^(C) and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”^(D)
