¹⁹ This is the verdict: Light^(A) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.^(B)

⁴⁷ “You mean he has deceived you also?”^(A) the Pharisees retorted. ⁴⁸ “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?^(B)

⁴² Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.^(A) But because of the Pharisees^(B) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;^{(C) 43} for they loved human praise^(D) more than praise from God.^(E)

⁴ You adulterous^(A) people,^[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world^(B) means enmity against God?^(C) Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.^(D)
