Jesus Calls the First Disciples

³⁵ The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, ³⁶ and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, ^(A)the Lamb of God!” ³⁷ The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. ³⁸ Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, ^(B)“What are you seeking?” And they said to him, ^(C)“Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” ³⁹ He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.^{[a] 40 (D)}One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus^[b] was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. ⁴¹ He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found ^(E)the Messiah” (which means Christ). ⁴² He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of ^(F)John. You shall be called ^(G)Cephas” (which means ^(H)Peter^[c]).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

^43 (I)The next day Jesus decided ^(J)to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” ⁴⁴ Now ^(K)Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. ⁴⁵ Philip found ^(L)Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom ^(M)Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus ^(N)of Nazareth, ^(O)the son of Joseph.”

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

6 After this ^(A)Jesus went away to the other side of ^(B)the Sea of Galilee, which is ^(C)the Sea of Tiberias. ² And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. ³ Jesus went up on ^(D)the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. ⁴ Now ^(E)the Passover, the ^(F)feast of the Jews, was at hand. ^5 (G)Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to ^(H)Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” ⁶ He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. ^7 (I)Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii^[a] worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” ⁸ One of his disciples, ^(J)Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, ⁹ “There is a boy here who has five ^(K)barley loaves and two fish, but ^(L)what are they for so many?” ¹⁰ Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” ^(M)Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. ¹¹ Jesus then took the loaves, and ^(N)when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. ¹² And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.”

The Triumphal Entry

¹² The next day ^(A)the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. ¹³ So they took branches of ^(B)palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, ^(C)“Hosanna! Blessed is ^(D)he who comes in the name of the Lord, even ^(E)the King of Israel!” ¹⁴ And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,

^16 (G)His disciples did not understand these things at first, but ^(H)when Jesus was glorified, then ^(I)they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. ^17 (J)The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. ¹⁸ The reason why the crowd went to meet him ^(K)was that they heard he had done this sign. ¹⁹ So the Pharisees said to one another, ^(L)“You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, ^(M)the world has gone after him.”

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

²⁰ Now ^(N)among those who went up to worship at the feast were some ^(O)Greeks. ²¹ So these came to ^(P)Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” ²² Philip went and told ^(Q)Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. ²³ And Jesus answered them, ^(R)“The hour has come ^(S)for the Son of Man to be glorified. ²⁴ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(T)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. ^25 (U)Whoever loves his life loses it, and ^(V)whoever ^(W)hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. ²⁶ If anyone serves me, he must ^(X)follow me; and ^(Y)where I am, there will my servant be also. ^(Z)If anyone serves me, ^(AA)the Father will honor him.

The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up

^27 (AB)“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, ^(AC)save me from ^(AD)this hour’? But ^(AE)for this purpose I have come to ^(AF)this hour. ²⁸ Father, glorify your name.” Then ^(AG)a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” ²⁹ The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, ^(AH)“An angel has spoken to him.” ³⁰ Jesus answered, ^(AI)“This voice has come for your sake, not mine. ^31 (AJ)Now is the judgment of this world; now will ^(AK)the ruler of this world ^(AL)be cast out. ³² And I, ^(AM)when I am lifted up from the earth, ^(AN)will draw ^(AO)all people to myself.”
