Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(A)
18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (B)He went out with His disciples over (C)the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. 2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; (D)for Jesus often met there with His disciples. 3 (E)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, (F)knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”
5 They answered Him, (G)“Jesus [a]of Nazareth.”
Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who (H)betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”
And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” 9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, (I)“Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”
10 (J)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink (K)the cup which My Father has given Me?”
Before the High Priest
12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And (L)they led Him away to (M)Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of (N)Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 (O)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was [b]expedient that one man should die for the people.
Peter Denies Jesus(P)
15 (Q)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did (R)another[c] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 (S)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”
He said, “I am (T)not.”
18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
Jesus Questioned by the High Priest
19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, (U)“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught (V)in synagogues and (W)in the temple, where [d]the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask (X)those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”
22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by (Y)struck[e] Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”
23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”
24 (Z)Then Annas sent Him bound to (AA)Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter Denies Twice More
25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. (AB)Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”
He denied it and said, “I am not!”
26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and (AC)immediately a rooster crowed.
In Pilate’s Court(AD)
28 (AE)Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. (AF)But they themselves did not go into the [f]Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 (AG)Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”
30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not [g]an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”
31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.”
Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 (AH)that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, (AI)signifying by what death He would die.
33 (AJ)Then Pilate entered the [h]Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”
35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”
36 (AK)Jesus answered, (AL)“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”
Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, (AM)that I should bear (AN)witness to the truth. Everyone who (AO)is of the truth (AP)hears My voice.”
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, (AQ)“I find no fault in Him at all.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(AR)
39 (AS)“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 (AT)Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” (AU)Now Barabbas was a robber.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AV)
19 So then (AW)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. 3 [i]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (AX)struck Him with their hands.
4 Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, (AY)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”
Pilate’s Decision
5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”
6 (AZ)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”
7 The Jews answered him, (BA)“We have a law, and according to [j]our law He ought to die, because (BB)He made Himself the Son of God.”
8 Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, 9 and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (BC)But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [k]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”
11 Jesus answered, (BD)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (BE)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (BF)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”
13 (BG)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (BH)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”
15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”
The chief priests answered, (BI)“We have no king but Caesar!”
16 (BJ)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [l]and led Him away.
The King on a Cross(BK)
17 (BL)And He, bearing His cross, (BM)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (BN)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (BO)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:
JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”
22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23 (BP)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:
(BQ)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”
Therefore the soldiers did these things.
Behold Your Mother
25 (BR)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (BS)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (BT)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (BU)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (BV)to his own home.
It Is Finished
28 After this, Jesus, [m]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (BW)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (BX)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (BY)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Jesus’ Side Is Pierced
31 (BZ)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (CA)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (CB)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (CC)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (CD)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (CE)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (CF)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (CG)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(CH)
38 (CI)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, (CJ)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And (CK)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of (CL)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and (CM)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So (CN)there they laid Jesus, (CO)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.
The Empty Tomb(CP)
20 Now the (CQ)first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the (CR)stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the (CS)other disciple, (CT)whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
3 (CU)Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. 4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. 5 And he, stooping down and looking in, saw (CV)the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and (CW)the [n]handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. 8 Then the (CX)other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. 9 For as yet they did not [o]know the (CY)Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.
Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord
11 (CZ)But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”
14 (DA)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and (DB)did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”
She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
16 Jesus said to her, (DC)“Mary!”
She turned and said to [p]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet (DD)ascended to My Father; but go to (DE)My brethren and say to them, (DF)‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to (DG)My God and your God.’ ”
18 (DH)Mary Magdalene came and told the [q]disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.
The Apostles Commissioned(DI)
19 (DJ)Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were [r]assembled, for (DK)fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, (DL)“Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He (DM)showed them His hands and His side. (DN)Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! (DO)As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (DP)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Seeing and Believing
24 Now Thomas, (DQ)called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”
So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and (DR)reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be (DS)unbelieving, but believing.”
28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him, [s]“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. (DT)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
That You May Believe
30 And (DU)truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (DV)but these are written that (DW)you may believe that Jesus (DX)is the Christ, the Son of God, (DY)and that believing you may have life in His name.

Jesus Arrested(A)
18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(B) On the other side there was a garden,(C) and he and his disciples went into it.(D)
2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(E) 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding(F) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(G) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(H) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(I)
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,”(J) they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(K)
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[a](L)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(M) the Father has given me?”
12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(N) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(O) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(P)
Peter’s First Denial(Q)
15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(R) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(S) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.
He replied, “I am not.”(T)
18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(U) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(V)
The High Priest Questions Jesus(W)
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(X) or at the temple,(Y) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(Z) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(AA) nearby slapped him in the face.(AB) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(AC) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(AD) the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials(AE)
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(AF) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(AG)
26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(AH) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(AI) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(AJ)
Jesus Before Pilate(AK)
28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(AL) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(AM) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(AN) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AO)
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AP) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AQ)
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AR) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AS) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AT)
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AU) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AV)
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AW) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AX)
Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(AY)
19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(AZ) 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(BA) And they slapped him in the face.(BB)
4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(BC) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(BD) 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(BE) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”
But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(BF) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(BG)
7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(BH) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(BI)
8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace.(BJ) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(BK) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(BL) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(BM) is guilty of a greater sin.”
12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(BN) opposes Caesar.”
13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(BO) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(BP) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(BQ) of the Passover; it was about noon.(BR)
“Here is your king,”(BS) Pilate said to the Jews.
15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”
“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(BT)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(BU)
So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(BV) he went out to the place of the Skull(BW) (which in Aramaic(BX) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(BY)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(BZ) the king of the jews.(CA) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(CB) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(CC)
22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”
This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(CD) that said,
So this is what the soldiers did.
25 Near the cross(CF) of Jesus stood his mother,(CG) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(CH) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(CI) there, and the disciple whom he loved(CJ) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[c] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
The Death of Jesus(CK)
28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(CL) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(CM) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(CN) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(CO) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(CP) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(CQ) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(CR) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(CS) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(CT) 35 The man who saw it(CU) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(CV) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(CW) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[d](CX) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[e](CY)
The Burial of Jesus(CZ)
38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(DA) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(DB) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[f] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(DC) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(DD) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(DE) and since the tomb was nearby,(DF) they laid Jesus there.
The Empty Tomb(DG)
20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene(DH) went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.(DI) 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,(DJ) and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”(DK)
3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.(DL) 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in(DM) at the strips of linen(DN) lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head.(DO) The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first,(DP) also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture(DQ) that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)(DR) 10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb(DS) 12 and saw two angels in white,(DT) seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”(DU)
“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”(DV) 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,(DW) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.(DX)
15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?(DY) Who is it you are looking for?”
Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,(DZ) “Rabboni!”(EA) (which means “Teacher”).
17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers(EB) and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father(EC) and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
18 Mary Magdalene(ED) went to the disciples(EE) with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders,(EF) Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace(EG) be with you!”(EH) 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.(EI) The disciples were overjoyed(EJ) when they saw the Lord.
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!(EK) As the Father has sent me,(EL) I am sending you.”(EM) 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.(EN) 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”(EO)
Jesus Appears to Thomas
24 Now Thomas(EP) (also known as Didymus[g]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side,(EQ) I will not believe.”(ER)
26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace(ES) be with you!”(ET) 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”(EU)
28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed;(EV) blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”(EW)
The Purpose of John’s Gospel
30 Jesus performed many other signs(EX) in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.(EY) 31 But these are written that you may believe[h](EZ) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,(FA) and that by believing you may have life in his name.(FB)
