16 Truly, truly, I say to you, (A)a servant[a] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, (B)blessed are you if you do them. 18 (C)I am not speaking of all of you; I know (D)whom I have chosen. But (E)the Scripture will be fulfilled,[b] (F)‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 (G)I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, (H)whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

One of You Will Betray Me

21 After saying these things, (I)Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, (J)“Truly, truly, I say to you, (K)one of you will betray me.” 22 (L)The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 (M)One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table (N)at Jesus' side,[c] 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus[d] of whom he was speaking. 25 (O)So that disciple, (P)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, (Q)“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread (R)when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, (S)he gave it to Judas, (T)the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, (U)Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, (V)“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, (W)because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need (X)for the feast,” or that he should (Y)give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. (Z)And it was night.

A New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, (AA)“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and (AB)God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, (AC)God will also glorify him in himself, and (AD)glorify him at once. 33 Little children, (AE)yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just (AF)as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 (AG)A new commandment (AH)I give to you, (AI)that you love one another: (AJ)just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 (AK)By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” (AL)Jesus answered him, “Where I am going (AM)you cannot follow me now, (AN)but you will follow afterward.” 37 (AO)Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, (AP)the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 (AQ)“Let not your hearts be troubled. (AR)Believe in God;[e] believe also in me. In (AS)my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that (AT)I go to prepare a place for you?[f] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you (AU)to myself, that (AV)where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[g] (AW)Thomas said to him, “Lord, (AX)we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am (AY)the way, and (AZ)the truth, and (BA)the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (BB)If you had known me, you would have (BC)known my Father also.[h] From now on you do know him and (BD)have seen him.”

(BE)Philip said to him, “Lord, (BF)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? (BG)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (BH)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you (BI)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that (BJ)I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else (BK)believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (BL)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I (BM)am going to the Father. 13 (BN)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that (BO)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 (BP)If you ask me[i] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (BQ)“If you love me, you will (BR)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (BS)Helper,[j] to be with you forever, 17 even (BT)the Spirit of truth, (BU)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (BV)will be[k] in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (BW)I will come to you. 19 (BX)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but (BY)you will see me. (BZ)Because I live, you also will live. 20 (CA)In that day you will know that (CB)I am in my Father, and (CC)you in me, and (CD)I in you. 21 (CE)Whoever has my commandments and (CF)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And (CG)he who loves me (CH)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and (CI)manifest myself to him.” 22 (CJ)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it (CK)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, (CL)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and (CM)we will come to him and (CN)make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And (CO)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the (CP)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (CQ)whom the Father will send in my name, (CR)he will teach you all things and (CS)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (CT)Peace I leave with you; (CU)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. (CV)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (CW)let them be afraid. 28 (CX)You heard me say to you, (CY)‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I (CZ)am going to the Father, for (DA)the Father is greater than I. 29 And (DB)now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for (DC)the ruler of this world is coming. (DD)He has no claim on me, 31 but I do (DE)as the Father has commanded me, (DF)so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

I Am the True Vine

15 “I am the (DG)true vine, and my Father is (DH)the vinedresser. (DI)Every branch in me that does not bear fruit (DJ)he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, (DK)that it may bear more fruit. Already (DL)you are clean (DM)because of the word that I have spoken to you. (DN)Abide (DO)in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; (DP)you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that (DQ)bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me (DR)he is thrown away like a branch and withers; (DS)and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If (DT)you abide in me, and my words abide in you, (DU)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (DV)By this my Father is glorified, that you (DW)bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (DX)As the Father has loved me, (DY)so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 (DZ)If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as (EA)I have kept (EB)my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, (EC)that my joy may be in you, and that (ED)your joy may be full.

12 (EE)“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (EF)Greater love has no one than this, (EG)that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are (EH)my friends (EI)if you do what I command you. 15 (EJ)No longer do I call you servants,[l] for the servant (EK)does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for (EL)all that I have heard from my Father (EM)I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but (EN)I chose you and appointed you that you should go and (EO)bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that (EP)whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, (EQ)so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 (ER)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 (ES)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because (ET)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: (EU)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, (EV)they will also persecute you. (EW)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But (EX)all these things they will do to you (EY)on account of my name, (EZ)because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, (FA)they would not have been guilty of sin,[m] but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (FB)Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 (FC)If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, (FD)they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have (FE)seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But (FF)the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: (FG)‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But (FH)when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, (FI)he will bear witness about me. 27 And (FJ)you also will bear witness, (FK)because you have been with me (FL)from the beginning.

16 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. (FM)They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, (FN)the hour is coming when (FO)whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things (FP)because they have not known the Father, nor me. But (FQ)I have said these things to you, that when (FR)their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, (FS)because I was with you. But now (FT)I am going to him who sent me, and (FU)none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (FV)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for (FW)if I do not go away, (FX)the Helper will not come to you. But (FY)if (FZ)I go, (GA)I will send him to you. (GB)And when he comes, he will (GC)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, (GD)because they do not believe in me; 10 (GE)concerning righteousness, (GF)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 (GG)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world (GH)is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When (GI)the Spirit of truth comes, (GJ)he will (GK)guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but (GL)whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will (GM)glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 (GN)All that the Father has is mine; (GO)therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 (GP)“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and (GQ)again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So (GR)some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, (GS)‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, (GT)‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? (GU)We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 (GV)Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, (GW)you will weep and lament, but (GX)the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but (GY)your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 (GZ)When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 (HA)So also you have sorrow now, but (HB)I will see you again, and (HC)your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 (HD)In that day you will (HE)ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, (HF)whatever you ask of the Father in my name, (HG)he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. (HH)Ask, and you will receive, (HI)that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. (HJ)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 (HK)for the Father himself loves you, because (HL)you have loved me and (HM)have believed that I came from God.[n] 28 (HN)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now (HO)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not (HP)using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that (HQ)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that (HR)you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (HS)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when (HT)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and (HU)will leave me alone. (HV)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that (HW)in me you may have peace. (HX)In the world you will have (HY)tribulation. But (HZ)take heart; (IA)I have overcome the world.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, (IB)he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, (IC)the hour has come; (ID)glorify your Son that the Son may (IE)glorify you, since (IF)you have given him authority over all flesh, (IG)to give eternal life to all (IH)whom you have given him. (II)And this is eternal life, (IJ)that they know you, (IK)the only (IL)true God, and (IM)Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I (IN)glorified you on earth, (IO)having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, (IP)glorify me in your own presence with the glory (IQ)that I had with you (IR)before the world existed.

(IS)“I have manifested your name to the people (IT)whom you gave me out of the world. (IU)Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything (IV)that you have given me is from you. For I have given them (IW)the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that (IX)I came from you; and (IY)they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. (IZ)I am not praying for the world but for those (JA)whom you have given me, for (JB)they are yours. 10 (JC)All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and (JD)I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but (JE)they are in the world, and (JF)I am coming to you. (JG)Holy Father, (JH)keep them in your name, (JI)which you have given me, (JJ)that they may be one, (JK)even as we are one. 12 (JL)While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have (JM)guarded them, and (JN)not one of them has been lost except (JO)the son of destruction, (JP)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now (JQ)I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have (JR)my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 (JS)I have given them your word, and (JT)the world has hated them (JU)because they are not of the world, (JV)just as I am not of the world. 15 I (JW)do not ask that you (JX)take them out of the world, but that you (JY)keep them from (JZ)the evil one.[o] 16 (KA)They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (KB)Sanctify them[p] in the truth; (KC)your word is truth. 18 (KD)As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And (KE)for their sake (KF)I consecrate myself,[q] that they also (KG)may be sanctified[r] in truth.

20 “I do not (KH)ask for these only, but also for those (KI)who will believe in me through their word, 21 (KJ)that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that (KK)they also may be in (KL)us, so that the world (KM)may believe that you have sent me. 22 (KN)The glory that you have given me (KO)I have given to them, (KP)that they may be one even as we are one, 23 (KQ)I in them and you in me, (KR)that they may become perfectly one, (KS)so that the world may know that you sent me and (KT)loved them even as (KU)you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be (KV)with me (KW)where I am, (KX)to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me (KY)before the foundation of the world. 25 (KZ)O righteous Father, even though (LA)the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 (LB)I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love (LC)with which you have loved me may be in them, and (LD)I in them.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (LE)he went out with his disciples across (LF)the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew (LG)the place, for (LH)Jesus often met there with his disciples. (LI)So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus, (LJ)knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, (LK)“Whom do you seek?” They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.”[s] Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. (LL)When Jesus[t] said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. So he asked them again, (LM)“Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” (LN)This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” 10 Then Simon Peter, (LO)having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant[u] and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; (LP)shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas

12 So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews[v] arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they (LQ)led him to (LR)Annas, for he was the father-in-law of (LS)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews (LT)that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus

15 (LU)Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16 (LV)but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17 (LW)The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the servants[w] and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. (LX)Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.

The High Priest Questions Jesus

19 (LY)The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken (LZ)openly (MA)to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. (MB)I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22 When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, (MC)“Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” 24 (MD)Annas then sent him bound to (ME)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter Denies Jesus Again

25 (MF)Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of (MG)the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you (MH)in the garden with him?” 27 Peter again denied it, and (MI)at once a rooster crowed.

Jesus Before Pilate

28 (MJ)Then they led Jesus (MK)from the house of Caiaphas to (ML)the governor's headquarters.[x] It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters, (MM)so that they would not be defiled, (MN)but could eat the Passover. 29 (MO)So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, (MP)“Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” 32 (MQ)This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken (MR)to show by what kind of death he was going to die.

My Kingdom Is Not of This World

33 (MS)So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, (MT)“Are you the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” 36 Jesus answered, (MU)“My kingdom (MV)is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, (MW)my servants would have been fighting, that (MX)I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” 37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, (MY)“You say that I am a king. (MZ)For this purpose I was born and for this purpose (NA)I have come into the world—(NB)to bear witness to the truth. (NC)Everyone who is (ND)of the truth (NE)listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

After he had said this, (NF)he went back outside to the Jews and told them, (NG)“I find no guilt in him. 39 (NH)But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 40 They cried out again, (NI)“Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.[y]

Jesus Delivered to Be Crucified

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and (NJ)flogged him. (NK)And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that (NL)I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing (NM)the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, (NN)“Behold the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, (NO)“Take him yourselves and crucify him, for (NP)I find no guilt in him.” The Jews[z] answered him, “We have a law, and (NQ)according to that law he ought to die because (NR)he has made himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this statement, (NS)he was even more afraid. (NT)He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, (NU)“Where are you from?” But (NV)Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, (NW)“You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (NX)he who delivered me over to you (NY)has the greater sin.”

12 From then on (NZ)Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. (OA)Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on (OB)the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic[aa] Gabbatha. 14 Now it was (OC)the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.[ab] He said to the Jews, (OD)“Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, (OE)“Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 (OF)So he (OG)delivered him over to them to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

So they took Jesus, 17 and (OH)he went out, (OI)bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 (OJ)There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate (OK)also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for (OL)the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, (OM)“What I have written I have written.”

23 (ON)When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.[ac] But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” (OO)This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,

(OP)“They divided my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.”

So the soldiers did these things, 25 (OQ)but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and (OR)the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, (OS)“Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to (OT)his own home.

The Death of Jesus

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now (OU)finished, said ((OV)to fulfill the Scripture), (OW)“I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, (OX)so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, (OY)“It is finished,” and he bowed his head and (OZ)gave up his spirit.

Jesus' Side Is Pierced

31 Since it was (PA)the day of Preparation, and (PB)so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was (PC)a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other (PD)who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out (PE)blood and water. 35 (PF)He who saw it has borne witness—(PG)his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—(PH)that you also may believe. 36 (PI)For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: (PJ)“Not one of his bones (PK)will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (PL)“They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

38 (PM)After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly (PN)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 (PO)Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus[ad] by night, came (PP)bringing a mixture of (PQ)myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds[ae] in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (PR)bound it in (PS)linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a (PT)garden, and (PU)in the garden a new tomb (PV)in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish (PW)day of Preparation, (PX)since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

The Resurrection

20 (PY)Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that (PZ)the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, (QA)the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and (QB)we do not know where they have laid him.” (QC)So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw (QD)the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and (QE)the face cloth, which had been on Jesus'[af] head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, (QF)who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet (QG)they did not understand the Scripture, (QH)that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And (QI)she saw (QJ)two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, (QK)“Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, (QL)“They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and (QM)saw Jesus standing, (QN)but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, (QO)“Woman, why are you weeping? (QP)Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be (QQ)the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,[ag] (QR)“Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to (QS)my brothers and say to them, (QT)‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to (QU)my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene (QV)went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 (QW)On the evening (QX)of that day, the first day of the week, (QY)the doors being locked where the disciples were (QZ)for fear of the Jews,[ah] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, (RA)“Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, (RB)he showed them his hands and his side. Then (RC)the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As (RD)the Father has sent me, (RE)even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he (RF)breathed on them and said to them, (RG)“Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (RH)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Jesus and Thomas

24 Now (RI)Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,[ai] was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, (RJ)“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. (RK)Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, (RL)“Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, (RM)“Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, (RN)“My Lord and my God!”

16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master,(A) nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.(B)

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

18 “I am not referring to all of you;(C) I know those I have chosen.(D) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture:(E) ‘He who shared my bread(F) has turned[a](G) against me.’[b](H)

19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe(I) that I am who I am.(J) 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”(K)

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit(L) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”(M)

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(N) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”(O)

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(P) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(Q)

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money,(R) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(S) or to give something to the poor.(T) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.(U)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(V)

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(W) is glorified(X) and God is glorified in him.(Y) 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself,(Z) and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.(AA)

34 “A new command(AB) I give you: Love one another.(AC) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(AD) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”(AE)

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”(AF)

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(AG) but you will follow later.”(AH)

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(AI)

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.(AJ) You believe(AK) in God[d];(AL) believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there(AM) to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back(AN) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.(AO) You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

Thomas(AP) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am(AQ) the way(AR) and the truth(AS) and the life.(AT) No one comes to the Father except through me.(AU) If you really know me, you will know[e] my Father as well.(AV) From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip(AW) said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.(AX) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?(AY) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.(AZ) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.(BA) 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes(BB) in me will do the works I have been doing,(BC) and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask(BD) in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.(BE) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate(BF) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.(BG) The world cannot accept him,(BH) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[f] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans;(BI) I will come to you.(BJ) 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.(BK) Because I live, you also will live.(BL) 20 On that day(BM) you will realize that I am in my Father,(BN) and you are in me, and I am in you.(BO) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(BP) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,(BQ) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas(BR) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”(BS)

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.(BT) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(BU) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.(BV)

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate,(BW) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,(BX) will teach you all things(BY) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.(BZ) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.(CA) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled(CB) and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’(CC) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,(CD) for the Father is greater than I.(CE) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.(CF) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world(CG) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.(CH)

“Come now; let us leave.

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am(CI) the true vine,(CJ) and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(CK) while every branch that does bear fruit(CL) he prunes[g] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(CM) Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(CN) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(CO) apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(CP) If you remain in me(CQ) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(CR) This is to my Father’s glory,(CS) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(CT)

“As the Father has loved me,(CU) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(CV) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(CW) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(CX) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(CY) 14 You are my friends(CZ) if you do what I command.(DA) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(DB) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(DC) so that you might go and bear fruit(DD)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(DE) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(DF)

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(DG) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(DH) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(DI) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[h](DJ) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(DK) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(DL) for they do not know the one who sent me.(DM) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(DN) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(DO) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(DP) they would not be guilty of sin.(DQ) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(DR) ‘They hated me without reason.’[i](DS)

The Work of the Holy Spirit

26 “When the Advocate(DT) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(DU)—the Spirit of truth(DV) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(DW) 27 And you also must testify,(DX) for you have been with me from the beginning.(DY)

16 “All this(DZ) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(EA) They will put you out of the synagogue;(EB) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(EC) They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(ED) I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(EE) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(EF) but now I am going to him who sent me.(EG) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(EH) Rather, you are filled with grief(EI) because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(EJ) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(EK) When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin,(EL) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(EM) because I am going to the Father,(EN) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(EO) now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(EP) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(EQ) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(ER) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(ES) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy

16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(ET) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(EU)

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(EV) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(EW) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(EX) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(EY) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(EZ) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(FA) but I will see you again(FB) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(FC) 23 In that day(FD) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(FE) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(FF) and your joy will be complete.(FG)

25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(FH) a time is coming(FI) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(FJ) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(FK) and have believed that I came from God.(FL) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(FM)

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(FN) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(FO) that you came from God.”(FP)

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(FQ) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(FR) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(FS) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(FT)

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(FU) In this world you will have trouble.(FV) But take heart! I have overcome(FW) the world.”

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven(FX) and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come.(FY) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.(FZ) For you granted him authority over all people(GA) that he might give eternal life(GB) to all those you have given him.(GC) Now this is eternal life: that they know you,(GD) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.(GE) I have brought you glory(GF) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.(GG) And now, Father, glorify me(GH) in your presence with the glory I had with you(GI) before the world began.(GJ)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

“I have revealed you[j](GK) to those whom you gave me(GL) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me(GM) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,(GN) and they believed that you sent me.(GO) I pray for them.(GP) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,(GQ) for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.(GR) And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,(GS) and I am coming to you.(GT) Holy Father, protect them by the power of[k] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one(GU) as we are one.(GV) 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[l] that name you gave me. None has been lost(GW) except the one doomed to destruction(GX) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.(GY)

13 “I am coming to you now,(GZ) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy(HA) within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them,(HB) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.(HC) 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.(HD) 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.(HE) 17 Sanctify them by[m] the truth; your word is truth.(HF) 18 As you sent me into the world,(HG) I have sent them into the world.(HH) 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.(HI)

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one,(HJ) Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.(HK) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.(HL) 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me,(HM) that they may be one as we are one(HN) 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me(HO) and have loved them(HP) even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me(HQ) to be with me where I am,(HR) and to see my glory,(HS) the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.(HT)

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you,(HU) I know you, and they know that you have sent me.(HV) 26 I have made you[n] known to them,(HW) and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them(HX) and that I myself may be in them.”

Jesus Arrested(HY)

18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(HZ) On the other side there was a garden,(IA) and he and his disciples went into it.(IB)

Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(IC) So Judas came to the garden, guiding(ID) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(IE) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(IF) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(IG)

“Jesus of Nazareth,”(IH) they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(II)

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[o](IJ)

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(IK) the Father has given me?”

12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(IL) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(IM) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(IN)

Peter’s First Denial(IO)

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(IP) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(IQ) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not.”(IR)

18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(IS) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(IT)

The High Priest Questions Jesus(IU)

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(IV) or at the temple,(IW) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(IX) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”

22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(IY) nearby slapped him in the face.(IZ) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(JA) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(JB) the high priest.

Peter’s Second and Third Denials(JC)

25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(JD) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”

He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(JE)

26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(JF) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(JG) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(JH)

Jesus Before Pilate(JI)

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(JJ) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(JK) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(JL) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(JM)

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(JN) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(JO)

34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(JP) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(JQ) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(JR)

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(JS) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(JT)

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(JU) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(JV)

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(JW)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(JX) The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(JY) And they slapped him in the face.(JZ)

Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(KA) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(KB) When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(KC) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(KD) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(KE)

The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(KF) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(KG)

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace.(KH) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(KI) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(KJ) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(KK) is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(KL) opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(KM) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(KN) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(KO) of the Passover; it was about noon.(KP)

“Here is your king,”(KQ) Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(KR)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(KS)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(KT) he went out to the place of the Skull(KU) (which in Aramaic(KV) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(KW)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(KX) the king of the jews.(KY) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(KZ) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(LA)

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(LB) that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.”[p](LC)

So this is what the soldiers did.

25 Near the cross(LD) of Jesus stood his mother,(LE) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(LF) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(LG) there, and the disciple whom he loved(LH) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[q] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus(LI)

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(LJ) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(LK) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(LL) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(LM) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(LN) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(LO) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(LP) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(LQ) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(LR) 35 The man who saw it(LS) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(LT) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(LU) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[r](LV) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[s](LW)

The Burial of Jesus(LX)

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(LY) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(LZ) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[t] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(MA) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(MB) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(MC) and since the tomb was nearby,(MD) they laid Jesus there.

The Empty Tomb(ME)

20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene(MF) went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.(MG) So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,(MH) and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”(MI)

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.(MJ) Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in(MK) at the strips of linen(ML) lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head.(MM) The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first,(MN) also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture(MO) that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)(MP) 10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb(MQ) 12 and saw two angels in white,(MR) seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”(MS)

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”(MT) 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,(MU) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.(MV)

15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?(MW) Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,(MX) “Rabboni!”(MY) (which means “Teacher”).

17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers(MZ) and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father(NA) and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

18 Mary Magdalene(NB) went to the disciples(NC) with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders,(ND) Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace(NE) be with you!”(NF) 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.(NG) The disciples were overjoyed(NH) when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!(NI) As the Father has sent me,(NJ) I am sending you.”(NK) 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.(NL) 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”(NM)

Jesus Appears to Thomas

24 Now Thomas(NN) (also known as Didymus[u]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side,(NO) I will not believe.”(NP)

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace(NQ) be with you!”(NR) 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”(NS)

28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
