²⁶ Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken.^(A) At once all the prison doors flew open,^(B) and everyone’s chains came loose.^(C)

² There was a violent earthquake,^(A) for an angel^(B) of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone^(C) and sat on it. ³ His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.^{(D) 4} The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

⁷ I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it,^(A) but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. ⁸ So I was left alone,^(B) gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left,^(C) my face turned deathly pale^(D) and I was helpless.^(E)
