Job 33:14-22
New International Version
14 For God does speak(A)—now one way, now another(B)—
though no one perceives it.(C)
15 In a dream,(D) in a vision(E) of the night,(F)
when deep sleep(G) falls on people
as they slumber in their beds,
16 he may speak(H) in their ears
and terrify them(I) with warnings,(J)
17 to turn them from wrongdoing
and keep them from pride,(K)
18 to preserve them from the pit,(L)
their lives from perishing by the sword.[a](M)
19 “Or someone may be chastened(N) on a bed of pain(O)
with constant distress in their bones,(P)
20 so that their body finds food(Q) repulsive
and their soul loathes the choicest meal.(R)
21 Their flesh wastes away to nothing,
and their bones,(S) once hidden, now stick out.(T)
22 They draw near to the pit,(U)
and their life to the messengers of death.[b](V)
Job 33:14-22
Holman Christian Standard Bible
14 For God speaks time and again,
but a person may not notice it.
15 In a dream, a vision(A) in the night,
when deep sleep falls on people(B)
as they slumber on their beds,
16 He uncovers their ears(C) at that time
and terrifies them[a] with warnings,
17 in order to turn a person from his actions
and suppress his pride.[b]
18 God spares his soul from the Pit,(D)
his life from crossing the river of death.[c]
19 A person may be disciplined on his bed(E) with pain
and constant distress in his bones,(F)
20 so that he detests bread,
and his soul despises his favorite food.(G)
21 His flesh wastes away to nothing,[d]
and his unseen bones stick out.
22 He draws near to the Pit,
and his life to the executioners.
