⁴ Then the accuser^[a] answered the Lord, “Skin for skin! All that the man has he will give for his life.

⁸ More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ^{(A) 9} and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law but one that comes through faith in Christ,^[a] the righteousness from God based on faith.^{(B) 10} I want to know Christ^[b] and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death,

²⁶ For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?

Do Not Worry

²⁵ “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink,^[a] or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?^(A)

⁸ But there were ten men among them who said to Ishmael, “Do not kill us, for we have stores of wheat, barley, oil, and honey hidden in the fields.” So he refrained and did not kill them along with their companions.

³ Then Queen Esther answered, “If I have won your favor, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me—that is my petition—and the lives of my people—that is my request.^{(A) 4} For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. If we had been sold merely as slaves, men and women, I would have held my peace, but no enemy can compensate for this damage to the king.”^[a](B)

¹⁸ We were being pounded by the storm so violently that on the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard,^{(A) 19} and on the third day with their own hands they threw the ship’s tackle overboard.
