¹⁶ His roots dry up below^(A)
    and his branches wither above.^(B)

¹⁶ Ephraim^(A) is blighted,
    their root is withered,
    they yield no fruit.^(B)
Even if they bear children,
    I will slay^(C) their cherished offspring.”

⁹ “Yet I destroyed the Amorites^(A) before them,
    though they were tall^(B) as the cedars
    and strong as the oaks.^(C)
I destroyed their fruit above
    and their roots^(D) below.

²⁴ Therefore, as tongues of fire^(A) lick up straw^(B)
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flames,
so their roots will decay^(C)
    and their flowers blow away like dust;^(D)
for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty
    and spurned the word^(E) of the Holy One^(F) of Israel.

³⁰ He will not escape the darkness;^(A)
    a flame^(B) will wither his shoots,^(C)
    and the breath of God’s mouth^(D) will carry him away.^(E)

¹⁹ My roots will reach to the water,^(A)
    and the dew will lie all night on my branches.^(B)
