⁵ If anyone denounces their friends for reward,^(A)

    and escape will elude them;^(B)

¹⁷ Moreover, our eyes failed,
    looking in vain^(A) for help;^(B)
from our towers we watched
    for a nation^(C) that could not save us.

⁵ Those who flatter their neighbors
    are spreading nets for their feet.^(A)

¹⁹ A gossip betrays a confidence;^(A)
    so avoid anyone who talks too much.

³ May the Lord silence all flattering lips^(C)
    and every boastful tongue—^(D)

²¹ I will show no partiality,^(A)
    nor will I flatter anyone;^(B)
22 for if I were skilled in flattery,
    my Maker^(C) would soon take me away.^(D)
