Job 16:22-17:9
New International Version
22 “Only a few years will pass
before I take the path of no return.(A)
17 1 My spirit(B) is broken,
my days are cut short,(C)
the grave awaits me.(D)
2 Surely mockers(E) surround me;(F)
my eyes must dwell on their hostility.
3 “Give me, O God, the pledge you demand.(G)
Who else will put up security(H) for me?(I)
4 You have closed their minds to understanding;(J)
therefore you will not let them triumph.
5 If anyone denounces their friends for reward,(K)
the eyes of their children will fail.(L)
6 “God has made me a byword(M) to everyone,(N)
a man in whose face people spit.(O)
7 My eyes have grown dim with grief;(P)
my whole frame is but a shadow.(Q)
8 The upright are appalled at this;
the innocent are aroused(R) against the ungodly.
9 Nevertheless, the righteous(S) will hold to their ways,
and those with clean hands(T) will grow stronger.(U)

2 Surely there are mockers around me,
and my eye dwells on their provocation.(C)
3 “Lay down a pledge for me with yourself;
who is there who will give surety for me?(D)
4 Since you have closed their minds to understanding,
therefore you will not let them triumph.(E)
5 Those who denounce friends for reward—
the eyes of their children will fail.(F)
6 “He has made me a byword of the peoples,
and I am one before whom people spit.(G)
7 My eye has grown dim from grief,
and all my members are like a shadow.(H)

and the innocent stir themselves up against the godless.
9 Yet the righteous hold to their way,
and they who have clean hands grow stronger and stronger.(I)
