Eliphaz Speaks: The Innocent Prosper

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

“If one ventures a word with you, will you be impatient?
    Yet who can keep from speaking?
Behold, you have instructed many,
    and you have (A)strengthened the weak hands.
Your words have upheld him who was stumbling,
    and you have (B)made firm the feeble knees.
But now it has come to you, and you are impatient;
    it touches you, and you are dismayed.
(C)Is not your fear of God[a] your (D)confidence,
    and the integrity of your ways your hope?

“Remember: (E)who that was innocent ever perished?
    Or where were the upright cut off?
As I have seen, those who (F)plow iniquity
    and sow trouble reap the same.
By (G)the breath of God they perish,
    and by (H)the blast of his anger they are consumed.
10 The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion,
    (I)the teeth of the young lions are broken.
11 The strong lion perishes for lack of prey,
    and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.

12 “Now a word was brought to me stealthily;
    my ear received (J)the whisper of it.
13 Amid (K)thoughts from (L)visions of the night,
    when (M)deep sleep falls on men,
14 dread came upon me, and trembling,
    which made all my bones shake.
15 A spirit glided past my face;
    the hair of my flesh stood up.
16 It stood still,
    but I could not discern its appearance.
(N)A form was before my eyes;
    there was silence, then I heard (O)a voice:
17 (P)‘Can mortal man be in the right before[b] God?
    Can a man be pure before his Maker?
18 Even in his servants (Q)he puts no trust,
    and his angels he charges with error;
19 how much more those who dwell in houses of (R)clay,
    whose foundation is in (S)the dust,
    who are crushed like[c] (T)the moth.
20 Between (U)morning and evening they are beaten to pieces;
    they perish forever (V)without anyone regarding it.
21 Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them,
    (W)do they not die, and that without wisdom?’

“Call now; is there anyone who will answer you?
    To which of (X)the holy ones will you turn?
Surely vexation kills the fool,
    and jealousy slays the simple.
(Y)I have seen the fool taking root,
    but suddenly I cursed his dwelling.
His children are (Z)far from safety;
    they are crushed in (AA)the gate,
    and there is no one to deliver them.
The hungry eat his harvest,
    and he takes it even out of thorns,[d]
    and the thirsty pant[e] after his[f] wealth.
For affliction does not come from the dust,
    nor does trouble sprout from the ground,
but man is (AB)born to trouble
    as the sparks fly upward.

“As for me, I would seek God,
    and to God would I commit my cause,
who (AC)does great things and (AD)unsearchable,
    (AE)marvelous things without number:
10 he gives (AF)rain on the earth
    and sends waters on the fields;
11 he (AG)sets on high those who are lowly,
    and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
12 He (AH)frustrates the devices of the crafty,
    so that their hands achieve no success.
13 He (AI)catches the wise in their own craftiness,
    and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime
    and (AJ)grope at noonday as in the night.
15 But he (AK)saves the needy from the sword of their mouth
    and from the hand of the mighty.
16 So the poor have hope,
    and (AL)injustice shuts her mouth.

17 “Behold, (AM)blessed is the one whom God reproves;
    therefore (AN)despise not the discipline of the (AO)Almighty.
18 For he wounds, but he (AP)binds up;
    he (AQ)shatters, but his hands heal.
19 He will (AR)deliver you from six troubles;
    in seven no (AS)evil[g] shall touch you.
20 (AT)In famine he will redeem you from death,
    and in war from the power of the sword.
21 You shall be (AU)hidden from the lash of the tongue,
    and shall not fear destruction when it comes.
22 At destruction and famine you shall laugh,
    and shall not fear (AV)the beasts of the earth.
23 For you shall be in league with the stones of the field,
    and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.
24 You shall know that your (AW)tent is at peace,
    and you shall inspect your fold and miss nothing.
25 You shall know also that your (AX)offspring shall be many,
    and your descendants as (AY)the grass of the earth.
26 You shall come to your grave in (AZ)ripe old age,
    like a sheaf gathered up in its season.
27 Behold, this we have (BA)searched out; it is true.
    Hear, and know it for your good.”[h]

Job Replies: My Complaint Is Just

Then Job answered and said:

“Oh that my vexation were weighed,
    and all my calamity laid in the balances!
For then it would be heavier than (BB)the sand of the sea;
    therefore my words have been rash.
For (BC)the arrows of the Almighty are in me;
    my spirit drinks their poison;
    the terrors of God are arrayed against me.
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass,
    or the ox low over his fodder?
Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt,
    or is there any taste in the juice of the mallow?[i]
My appetite refuses to touch them;
    they are as food that is loathsome to me.[j]

“Oh that I might have my request,
    and that God would fulfill my hope,
that it would (BD)please God to crush me,
    that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!
10 This would be my comfort;
    I would even exult[k] in pain (BE)unsparing,
    for I have not denied the words of (BF)the Holy One.
11 What is my strength, that I should wait?
    And what is my end, that I should be patient?
12 Is my strength the strength of stones, or is my flesh bronze?
13 Have I any help in me,
    when resource is driven from me?

14 “He who (BG)withholds[l] kindness from a (BH)friend
    forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
15 My (BI)brothers are (BJ)treacherous as a torrent-bed,
    as torrential (BK)streams that pass away,
16 which are dark with ice,
    and where the snow hides itself.
17 When they melt, they disappear;
    when it is hot, they vanish from their place.
18 The caravans turn aside from their course;
    they go up into (BL)the waste and perish.
19 The caravans of (BM)Tema look,
    the travelers of (BN)Sheba hope.
20 They are (BO)ashamed because they were confident;
    they come there and are (BP)disappointed.
21 For you have now become nothing;
    you see my calamity and are afraid.
22 Have I said, ‘Make me a gift’?
    Or, ‘From your wealth offer a bribe for me’?
23 Or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary's hand’?
    Or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of (BQ)the ruthless’?

24 “Teach me, and I will be silent;
    make me understand how I have gone astray.
25 How forceful are upright words!
    But what does reproof from you reprove?
26 Do you think that you can reprove words,
    when the speech of a despairing man is (BR)wind?
27 You would even (BS)cast lots over the fatherless,
    and bargain over your friend.

28 “But now, be pleased to look at me,
    for I will not lie to your face.
29 (BT)Please turn; let no injustice be done.
    Turn now; my vindication is at stake.
30 Is there any injustice on my tongue?
    Cannot my palate discern the cause of calamity?

  2. Job 6:6 The meaning of the Hebrew for this phrase is uncertain.
  3. Job 6:29 Or my righteousness still stands

20 (A)At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God's sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house, 21 and (B)when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. 22 And Moses (C)was instructed in (D)all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was (E)mighty in his words and deeds.

23 “When he was forty years old, it came into his heart (F)to visit his brothers, the children of Israel. 24 And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian. 25 He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand. 26 (G)And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?’ 27 But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, (H)‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? 28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ 29 At this retort (I)Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, (J)where he became the father of two sons.

30 “Now when forty years had passed, (K)an angel appeared to him (L)in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush. 31 When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord: 32 (M)‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look. 33 Then the Lord said to him, (N)‘Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34 (O)I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and (P)have heard their groaning, and (Q)I have come down to deliver them. (R)And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’

35 “This Moses, whom they rejected, (S)saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer (T)by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 (U)This man led them out, performing (V)wonders and signs (W)in Egypt and (X)at the Red Sea and (Y)in the wilderness for (Z)forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you (AA)a prophet like me from your brothers.’ 38 This is the one (AB)who was in the congregation in the wilderness with (AC)the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. (AD)He received (AE)living (AF)oracles to give to us. 39 Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and (AG)in their hearts they turned to Egypt, 40 saying to Aaron, (AH)‘Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 41 And (AI)they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and (AJ)were rejoicing in (AK)the works of their hands. 42 But (AL)God turned away and (AM)gave them over to worship (AN)the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:

(AO)“‘Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices,
    (AP)during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
43 You took up the tent of (AQ)Moloch
    and the star of your god Rephan,
    the images that you made to worship;
and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’

20 “At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child.[a] For three months he was cared for by his family.(A) 21 When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.(B) 22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians(C) and was powerful in speech and action.

23 “When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. 24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 26 The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’

27 “But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?(D) 28 Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’[b] 29 When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.(E)

30 “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:(F) 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers,(G) the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’[c] Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.(H)

33 “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.(I) 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’[d](J)

35 “This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’(K) He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt(L) and performed wonders and signs(M) in Egypt, at the Red Sea(N) and for forty years in the wilderness.(O)

37 “This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’[e](P) 38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel(Q) who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors;(R) and he received living words(S) to pass on to us.(T)

39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.(U) 40 They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’[f](V) 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.(W) 42 But God turned away from them(X) and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars.(Y) This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:

“‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
    forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43 You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek
    and the star of your god Rephan,
    the idols you made to worship.
Therefore I will send you into exile’[g](Z) beyond Babylon.
