25 Then Bildad the Shuhite(A) replied:
2 “Dominion and awe belong to God;(B)
he establishes order in the heights of heaven.(C)
3 Can his forces be numbered?
On whom does his light not rise?(D)
4 How then can a mortal be righteous before God?
How can one born of woman be pure?(E)
5 If even the moon(F) is not bright
and the stars are not pure in his eyes,(G)
6 how much less a mortal, who is but a maggot—
a human being,(H) who is only a worm!”(I)

13 イエスが宮から出ようとしておられた時、弟子の一人が言いました。「先生。これはまあ、なんと美しい建物でしょう。なんと見事な石でしょう。」
2 すると、イエスはお答えになりました。「なるほどすばらしいものです。しかし、この建物も、たった一つの石さえほかの石の上に残らないほど、あとかたもなくくずれ落ちてしまうのです。」
3-4 イエスがオリーブ山で、宮のほうを向いて座っておられると、ペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネ、アンデレがこっそりイエスに尋ねました。「いったいいつ、神殿にそんなことが起こるのですか。そうなる前に、何か前兆でもあるのでしょうか。」
5 そこで、イエスはゆっくり話し始められました。「だれにもだまされてはいけません。 6 自分こそキリストだと名乗る者が大ぜい現れて、多くの人を惑わすからです。 7 また、あちこちで戦争が始まるでしょう。けれども、まだ終わりが来たわけではありません。 8 民族は民族に、国は国に敵対して立ち上がり、至る所で地震やききんが起こります。しかしこれらはみな、やがて襲って来る苦しみの、ほんの始まりにすぎないのです。
9 しかし、これらのことが起こり始めたら、よく警戒しなさい。非常な危険が迫っているからです。あなたがたは法廷に引き出され、会堂でむち打ちの刑を受け、また、わたしに従う者だというだけで、総督や王たちの前で訴えられるでしょう。しかしその時こそ、神をあかしするチャンスです。 10 終わりの時が来る前に、福音が世界中の人々に伝えられなければなりません。 11 逮捕されても、取り調べの時、どう釈明しようかと心配することはありません。ただその時、神があなたがたに語ってくださることだけを話せばいいのです。話をするのはあなたがたではなく、聖霊です。
12 兄弟同士が殺し合うかと思えば、親までが子を裏切り、子もまた親に反逆し、殺します。 13 そしてあなたがたは、わたしの弟子であるというだけで、すべての人に憎まれます。しかし終わりまで、わたしへの信仰を捨てずに耐え忍ぶ者はみな救われます。
14 恐るべきもの（ダニエル9・27、11・31）が神殿に立つのを見たら〔読者よ、よく考えなさい〕、ユダヤにいる人たちは、山へ逃げなさい。 15-16 急ぐのです。もしその時、屋上にいたら、家の中に戻ってはいけません。畑にいたら、お金や着物を取りに帰ってはいけません。 17 このような日に妊娠している女と乳飲み子をかかえている母親は、ほんとうに不幸です。 18 また、あなたがたの逃げるのが、冬にならないように祈りなさい。 19 それは、神が天地を創造された初めから今に至るまで、いまだかつてなかったような恐るべき日だからです。 20 主が、このわざわいの期間を短くしてくださらないかぎり、地上には、一人も生き残れないでしょう。しかし、神に選ばれた人たちのために、その期間は短くされるのです。
21 その時だれかが、『この方がキリストだ』とか『いや、あの方がそうだ』とか言っても、気をとられてはいけません。 22 偽キリストや偽預言者が次々に現れて、不思議な奇跡を行い、神に選ばれた者たちをさえ惑わそうとするからです。 23 気をつけていなさい。警告しておきます。
24 この苦難の時に続いて、太陽は暗くなり、月は光を失い、 25 星は落ち、宇宙に異変が起こります。
26 その時すべての人が、メシヤのわたしが大きな力と栄光とを帯びて、雲に乗って来るのを見るでしょう。 27 わたしは天使たちを遣わし、世界中から、まさに天と地の果てから、選ばれた者たちを呼び集めるのです。
28 さて、いちじくの木から教訓を学びなさい。いちじくの葉が出てくれば、夏は間近です。 29 同じように、いま言ったようなことが起これば、わたしはもう戸口まで来ているのです。
30 そうです。これが、この時代の終わりの前兆なのです。 31 天地は消え去りますが、わたしのことばは永遠に残ります。
32 しかしだれも、天の使いも、わたし自身でさえも、その日、その時がいつかは知りません。ただ、父なる神だけが知っておられます。 33 だから、いつ終わりが来ても困らないように、わたしの帰りを目を覚まして待っていなさい。
34 こう言えば、もっとはっきりわかるでしょう。ちょうど、外国旅行に出かける人が、使用人たちに留守中の仕事の手配をし、門番には、主人の帰りを見張っているようにと命じて出かけるのと同じです。 35 だから、しっかり目を覚ましていなさい。いつわたしが帰って来るか、夕方か、夜中か、明け方か、それともすっかり明るくなってからか、わからないのですから。 36 不意をつかれて、居眠りしているところを見られないようにしなさい。 37 あなたがただけでなく、すべての人にも念を押しておきます。わたしの帰りを、抜かりなく見張っていなさい。」

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(A)
13 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”
2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”(B)
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives(C) opposite the temple, Peter, James, John(D) and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”
5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(E) 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues.(F) On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.(G)
12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.(H) 13 Everyone will hate you because of me,(I) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(J)
14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’[a](K) standing where it[b] does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(L) 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world,(M) until now—and never to be equaled again.(N)
20 “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it.(O) 22 For false messiahs and false prophets(P) will appear and perform signs and wonders(Q) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23 So be on your guard;(R) I have told you everything ahead of time.
24 “But in those days, following that distress,
“‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
25 the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[c](S)
26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds(T) with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.(U)
28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it[d] is near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation(V) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(W) 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(X)
The Day and Hour Unknown
32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.(Y) 33 Be on guard! Be alert[e]!(Z) You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants(AA) in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”(AB)

裏切られるイエス
14 過越の祭り（パン種を入れないパンを食べる、年に一度のユダヤ人の祭り）が二日後に迫りました。いぜんとして、祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちは、イエスを捕らえて死刑にしようと、その機会をうかがっていました。 2 しかし、「祭りの間はまずいだろう。民衆が暴動でも起こすと取り返しがつかないから」と用心していました。
3 さてイエスは、ベタニヤの、ツァラアトに冒されたシモンという人の家におられました。ちょうど食卓に着いておられる時、女が一人、入って来ました。高価な香油の入った美しいつぼを持っています。女はイエスに近づくと、いきなりつぼの封を切り、香油をイエスの頭に注ぎかけました。
4-5 同席していた何人かの者たちは腹を立て、「なんてもったいないことをする女だ。この香油なら高く売れて、貧しい人たちに施しをすることもできたのに」と、女をとがめました。
6 しかしイエスは、彼らに言われました。「彼女のするままにさせておきなさい。良いことをしてくれたのに、なぜ非難するのですか。 7 貧しい人たちは、いつも身近にいるのだから、その気があれば、いつでも助けることができます。しかし、わたしはもう、そんなに長くこの地上にいないのです。 8 この女は、精一杯のことをしてくれました。わたしの葬りの準備に香油を塗ってくれたのですから。 9 よく言っておきます。世界中どこででも、福音が伝えられる所では、この女のしたことも必ず賞賛されるでしょう。」
10 ところで、弟子の一人イスカリオテのユダは、イエスを売り渡そうと祭司長たちのところに出かけました。
11 ユダが来意を告げると、祭司長たちは喜び、謝礼を払うことを約束しました。それ以来ユダは、イエスを引き渡すチャンスをねらうようになりました。
12 過越の祭りの最初の日、すなわち、小羊をいけにえとしてささげる日に、弟子たちはイエスに、「どこで過越の食事をなさるおつもりですか」と尋ねました。 13 そこでイエスは、弟子を二人エルサレムへやり、その準備をさせることにしました。「町を歩いて行くと、水がめを持って来る男に出会うから、その男について行きなさい。 14 彼が入った家の主人に、『私どもの先生が、過越の食事をする部屋を見て来るようにと申しました』と言いなさい。 15 主人はすっかり用意の整った二階の広間を見せてくれるはずです。そこで食事のしたくをしなさい。」
16 二人が町に入って行くと、何もかもイエスの言われたとおりでした。こうして、過越の準備は整いました。
17 夕方、イエスと弟子たちは連れ立って、そこにやって来ました。 18 みなが食卓を囲んで食事をしていると、イエスは言われました。「いいですか。よく言っておきます。今わたしといっしょに食事をしている者の一人が、わたしを裏切ります。」
19 これを聞いた弟子たちは、ひどく心を痛め、口々に、「まさか、私ではありませんよね」と尋ねました。
20 「あなたがた十二人の中の一人で、今、わたしといっしょに同じ鉢にパンを浸している者です。 21 預言者が、ずっと昔からはっきり預言してきたように、わたしは死ななければなりません。けれども、わたしを裏切る者はのろわれます。その人はむしろ生まれてこなかったほうがよかったのです。」
22 食事の最中にイエスはパンを取り、神の祝福を祈ってからそれをちぎり、弟子たちに分け与えられました。「食べなさい。これはわたしの体です。」
23 それからぶどう酒の杯を取り、神に感謝の祈りをささげた後、弟子たちに与えられました。弟子たちはみな、その杯から飲みました。
24 イエスは言われました。「これは多くの人のために流す、わたしの血です。神と人間との新しい契約を保証する血です。 25 よく言っておきますが、やがて神の国で新しく飲むその日まで、わたしはもう決してぶどう酒を飲みません。」
26 一同は賛美歌を歌ってから、オリーブ山に向かいました。
27 イエスは、弟子たちに言われました。「あなたがたはみな、わたしを見捨てるでしょう。神が預言者を通して、『わたしが羊飼いを打つ。すると羊は散り散りになる』（ゼカリヤ13・7）と言われたとおりに。 28 だが、わたしは復活してガリラヤに行きます。そこであなたがたに会うでしょう。」
29 すると、ペテロが言いました。「だれがどうあろうと、私だけは、この私だけは絶対にあなたを捨てません。」 30 イエスは、「ペテロよ。あなたは明日の朝、鶏が二度鳴く前に、三度わたしを知らないと言うでしょう」と言われました。
31 「とんでもない！ たとえ死んでも、絶対にあなたを知らないなどとは言いません。」ペテロは大声で言いはりました。ほかの弟子たちも、口々に誓い始めました。
ゲツセマネで祈る
32 さて一同は、オリーブの木の茂っている、ゲツセマネと呼ばれる園にやって来ました。「わたしが向こうで祈っている間、ここに座っていなさい。」
33 イエスはこうお命じになると、ペテロとヤコブとヨハネだけを連れて、奥のほうに行かれました。そして、恐れと絶望に襲われて、イエスはもだえ苦しみ始められました。 34 「わたしは悲しみのあまり、今にも死にそうです。ここを離れず、わたしといっしょに目を覚ましていなさい。」
35 イエスはそう言うと、三人から少し離れた所へ行き、地面にひれ伏して、もしできることなら、自分を待っているその時が来ないように、と祈られました。 36 「父よ、わたしの父よ。あなたはどんなことでもおできになります。どうぞ、この杯を取り除いてください。しかし、わたしの思いどおりにではなく、あなたのお心のままになさってください。」
37 イエスが弟子たちのところへ戻って来られると、三人とも、ぐっすり眠り込んでいるではありませんか。そこで、ペテロに声をかけました。「シモンよ。眠っているのですか。たったの一時間でも、わたしといっしょに目を覚ましていられなかったのですか。 38 しっかり目を覚まして祈っていなさい。さもないと誘惑に負けてしまいます。心は燃えていても、肉体は弱いのですから。」
39 こうしてまた彼らから離れ、先ほどと同じことを祈られました。 40 そのあと、もう一度弟子たちのところへ戻って来ると、またもや三人とも眠り込んでいます。ひどく眠気がさして我慢できなかったからです。彼らは何と言いわけしたらよいか、わかりませんでした。
41 イエスは三度目に戻って来て言われました。「まだ眠っているのですか。それだけ眠れば十分でしょう。さあ、時が来ました。いよいよ、わたしは悪い者たちの手に売り渡されるのです。 42 さあ、立ちなさい。行くのです。見なさい。裏切り者がやって来ました。」
43 イエスがまだ言い終わらないうちに、祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちの差し向けた暴徒たちが、手に手に剣やこん棒を持って、弟子の一人であるユダを先頭に近づいて来ました。
44 ユダは前もって彼らと、自分が口づけのあいさつをする相手がイエスだから、その男を捕まえて、引き立てて行くように、と打ち合わせておきました。 45 それで、やって来るとすぐイエスに近づき、「先生」と声をかけて、さも親しそうに抱きしめ、あいさつの口づけをしました。 46 そのとたん、暴徒たちがいっせいにイエスを取り押さえました。 47 その時、イエスのそばにいた一人がさっと剣を抜き放つと、大祭司の部下に切りかかり、相手の耳を切り落としました。
48 イエスは暴徒たちに向かって言われました。「剣やこん棒で、これほどものものしい武装をして来なければならないほど、わたしは凶悪な犯罪者なのですか。 49 なぜ、神殿で捕らえようとしなかったのですか。わたしはあそこで毎日教えていたのに。けれども、これもみな、わたしについての預言が実現するためなのです。」
50 この時にはもう弟子たちはみな、イエスを見捨てて逃げ去っていました。 51-52 ただ一人、亜麻布を一枚だけまとって、イエスのうしろからついて行く青年がいました。ところが、途中で暴徒たちに見つかり、危うく捕まりそうになったので、引きちぎられた亜麻布を脱ぎ捨て、裸のまま逃げて行きました。
ペテロ、イエスを知らないと言う
53 イエスは、大祭司の家に引き立てられて行きました。祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちも急いで駆けつけ、まもなく全員がそろいました。 54 さて、ペテロは遠くからあとをつけて行き、うまく門からもぐり込んで、兵士たちにまぎれて火のそばでうずくまっていました。
55 中では、イエスに死刑の宣告を下すための証拠集めに、祭司長やユダヤの最高議会の全議員がやっきになっていましたが、何も見つけることができません。 56 偽の証人は大ぜい名乗り出たのですが、証言がみな食い違っていたのです。 57-58 そのうち何人かが、「確か、この男が、『人間の手で造られた神殿をこわして、人間の手によらない神殿を三日で建ててみせる』と言っているのを聞きました」と偽証しました。 59 しかしこの点でも、証言は一致しませんでした。
60 その時、大祭司が進み出て、イエスに問いただしました。「おまえはこれらの訴えに答えないつもりか。どうなんだ。何も釈明する気はないのか。」
61 イエスは、ひとこともお答えになりません。大祭司は続けて、「おまえは神の子、キリストなのか」と尋ねました。 62 「そのとおりです。あなたがたは、やがてわたしが神の右の座につき、雲に乗ってもう一度この地上に来るのを見るでしょう。」 63-64 この答えに、大祭司は即座に自分の着物を引き裂き、叫びました。「これだけ聞けば十分だ！ さあ、お聞きのとおりだ。神を汚したこの男をどうしてくれよう。」こうして彼らは、イエスの死刑を全員一致で決めました。
65 このあと、ある者たちは、イエスにつばを吐きかけたり、目隠ししてこぶしで顔をなぐり、「今なぐったのはだれか当ててみろ」とあざけったりしました。役人たちもイエスの身柄を受け取って、平手で打ちました。
66 一方ペテロは、下の中庭にいました。大祭司の女中の一人が、 67 火にあたっているペテロに気づき、じっと見つめて言いました。「あら、あんた。あのナザレ人イエスといっしょにいた人じゃないの？」 68 ペテロはそのことばを打ち消し、「変な言いがかりはよしてくれ」と言って、出口のほうへ行きかけました。その時、鶏が鳴きました。
69 すると女中は、またもペテロをしげしげと見て、そばに立っている人たちに、「ほら、あの人。あの人はイエスの弟子よ」と言いふらしました。 70 ペテロはあわててそれを打ち消しました。しばらくすると、火のそばに立っていたほかの男たちも、「おまえは確かにイエスの仲間だ。ガリラヤ人だからな」と騒ぎだしました。 71 ペテロは、「そんな男のことなど知らない。これがうそだったら、どんな罰があたってもかまわない」と叫びました。
72 するとすぐ、鶏が二度目に鳴くのが聞こえました。その瞬間ペテロは、「鶏が二度鳴く前に三度わたしを知らないと言います」という、イエスのことばを思い出したのです。ペテロは激しく泣きくずれました。

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(A)(B)(C)
14 Now the Passover(D) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(E) 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3 While he was in Bethany,(F) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(G)
4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[a] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you,[b] and you can help them any time you want.(H) But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(I) 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(J) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,(K) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.(L) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(M)(N)
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(O) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(P) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(Q) 21 The Son of Man(R) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(S) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(T)
24 “This is my blood of the[c] covenant,(U) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(V)
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(W)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(X)
27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(Z)
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[e] you yourself will disown me three times.”(AA)
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(AB) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
Gethsemane(AC)
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(AD) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(AE) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(AF) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[f] Father,”(AG) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(AH) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(AI)
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AJ) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(AK)
39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(AL) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AM)
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(AN) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(AO) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(AP) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(AQ) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(AR)
51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AS)(AT)
53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(AU) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(AV)
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AW) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(AX) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(AY)
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(AZ)
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(BA)
63 The high priest tore his clothes.(BB) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death.(BC) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(BD)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BE)
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(BF) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(BG) she looked closely at him.
“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(BH) she said.
68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(BI) he said, and went out into the entryway.[g]
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(BJ)
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(BK)
71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(BL)
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[h] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[i] you will disown me three times.”(BM) And he broke down and wept.
