Job Feels Insulted

19 Then Job responded,

“How long will you torment [a]me
And crush me with words?
These ten times you have insulted me;
You are not ashamed to wrong me.
Even if I have truly done wrong,
My error stays with me.
If indeed you (A)exalt yourselves against me
And prove my disgrace to me,
Know then that (B)God has wronged me
And has surrounded me with (C)His net.

Everything Is Against Him

“Behold, (D)I cry, ‘Violence!’ but I get no answer;
I shout for help, but there is no justice.
He has (E)blocked my way so that I cannot pass,
And He has put (F)darkness on my paths.
He has (G)stripped my honor from me
And removed the (H)crown from my head.
10 He (I)breaks me down on every side, and I am gone;
And He has uprooted my (J)hope (K)like a tree.
11 He has also (L)kindled His anger against me
And (M)considered me as His enemy.
12 His (N)troops come together
And (O)build up their [b]way against me
And camp around my tent.

13 “He has (P)removed my brothers far from me,
And my (Q)acquaintances have completely turned away from me.
14 My relatives have failed,
And my (R)close friends have forgotten me.
15 Those who live in my house and my servant women consider me a stranger.
I am a foreigner in their sight.
16 I call to my servant, but he does not answer;
I have to implore his favor with my mouth.
17 My breath is offensive to my wife,
And I am loathsome to my own brothers.
18 Even young children despise me;
I stand up and they speak against me.
19 All [c]my (S)associates loathe me,
And those I love have turned against me.
20 My (T)bone clings to my skin and my flesh,
And I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.
21 Pity me, pity me, you friends of mine,
For the (U)hand of God has struck me.
22 Why do you (V)persecute me as God does,
And are not satisfied with my flesh?

Job Says My Redeemer Lives

23 “Oh that my words were written!
Oh that they were (W)recorded in a book!
24 That with an iron stylus and lead
They were engraved in the rock forever!
25 Yet as for me, I know that (X)my Redeemer lives,
And at the last, He will take His stand on the [d]earth.
26 Even after my skin [e]is destroyed,
Yet from my flesh I will (Y)see God,
27 Whom I, on my part, shall behold for myself,
And whom my eyes will see, and not another.
My [f]heart (Z)faints [g]within me!
28 If you say, ‘How shall we (AA)persecute him?’
And ‘[h]What pretext for a case against him can we find?’
29 Then be afraid of (AB)the sword for yourselves,
For wrath brings the punishment of the sword,
So that you may know (AC)there is judgment.”

Zophar Says the Rejoicing of the Wicked Is Short

20 Then Zophar the Naamathite responded,

“Therefore my disquieting thoughts make me [i]respond,
Even because of my [j]inward agitation.
I listened to (AD)the reprimand which insults me,
And the spirit of my understanding makes me answer.
Do you know this from (AE)ancient times,
From the establishment of mankind on earth,
That the (AF)rejoicing of the wicked is short,
And (AG)the joy of the godless momentary?
Though his arrogance [k](AH)reaches the heavens,
And his head touches the clouds,
He (AI)perishes forever like his refuse;
Those who have seen him (AJ)will say, ‘Where is he?’
He flies away like a (AK)dream, and they cannot find him;
Like a vision of the night he is (AL)chased away.
The (AM)eye which saw him sees him no longer,
And (AN)his place no longer beholds him.
10 His (AO)sons [l]favor the poor,
And his hands (AP)give back his wealth.
11 His (AQ)bones are full of his youthful strength,
But it lies down with him [m]in the dust.

12 “Though (AR)evil tastes sweet in his mouth
And he hides it under his tongue,
13 Though he [n]desires it and will not let it go,
But holds it (AS)in his [o]mouth,
14 Yet his food in his stomach is changed
To the [p]venom of cobras within him.
15 He swallows riches,
But will (AT)vomit them up;
God will expel them from his belly.
16 He sucks (AU)the poison of cobras;
The viper’s tongue kills him.
17 He does not look at (AV)the streams,
The rivers flowing with honey and curds.
18 He (AW)returns the product of his labor
And cannot swallow it;
As to the riches of his trading,
He cannot even enjoy them.
19 For he has (AX)oppressed and neglected the poor;
He has seized a house which he has not built.

20 “Because he knew no quiet [q]within him,
He does (AY)not retain anything he desires.
21 Nothing remains [r]for him to devour,
Therefore (AZ)his prosperity does not endure.
22 In the fullness of his excess he will be cramped;
The (BA)hand of everyone who suffers will come against him.
23 When he (BB)fills his belly,
God will send His fierce anger on him
And (BC)rain it on him [s]while he is eating.
24 He may (BD)flee from the iron weapon,
But the bronze bow will pierce him.
25 It is drawn and comes out of his back,
Even the flashing point from (BE)his gallbladder;
(BF)Terrors come upon him,
26 Complete (BG)darkness is held in reserve for his treasures,
And unfanned (BH)fire will devour him;
It will consume the survivor in his tent.
27 The (BI)heavens will reveal his guilt,
And the earth will rise up against him.
28 The (BJ)increase of his house will disappear;
His possessions will flow away (BK)on the day of His anger.
29 This is a wicked person’s (BL)portion from God,
The inheritance decreed to him by God.”

Job Says God Will Deal with the Wicked

21 Then Job responded,

“Listen carefully to my speech,
And let this be your way of consolation.
Bear with me that I may speak;
Then after I have spoken, you may (BM)mock me.
As for me, is (BN)my complaint [t]to a mortal?
Or (BO)why should [u]I not be impatient?
Look at me, and be astonished,
And (BP)put your hand over your mouth.
Even when I remember, I am disturbed,
And (BQ)horror takes hold of my flesh.
Why (BR)do the wicked still live,
Grow old, and also become very [v](BS)powerful?
Their [w](BT)descendants endure with them in their sight,
And their offspring before their eyes,
Their houses (BU)are safe from fear,
And the [x]rod of God is not on them.
10 His ox mates [y]without fail;
His cow calves and does not miscarry.
11 They send out their boys like the flock,
And their children dance.
12 They [z]sing with the tambourine and harp,
And rejoice at the sound of the flute.
13 They (BV)spend their days in prosperity,
And [aa]suddenly they go down to [ab]Sheol.
14 Yet they say to God, ‘(BW)Go away from us!
We do not even desire the knowledge of Your ways.
15 [ac]Who is [ad]the Almighty, that we should serve Him,
And (BX)what would we gain if we plead with Him?’
16 Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand;
The (BY)advice of the wicked is far from me.

17 “How often is (BZ)the lamp of the wicked put out,
Or does their (CA)disaster fall on them?
Does [ae]God apportion destruction in His anger?
18 Are they as (CB)straw before the wind,
And like (CC)chaff which the storm carries away?
19 You say, ‘(CD)God saves up [af]a person’s [ag]wrongdoing for his sons.’
Let [ah]God repay him so that he may know it.
20 Let his (CE)own eyes see his destruction,
And let him (CF)drink of the wrath of [ai]the Almighty.
21 For what does he care about his household [aj]after him,
When the number of his months is at an end?
22 Can anyone (CG)teach God knowledge,
In that He (CH)judges those on high?
23 One (CI)dies in his full strength,
Being wholly undisturbed and at ease;
24 His [ak]sides are filled with fat,
And the (CJ)marrow of his bones is wet,
25 While another dies with a bitter soul,
Never even [al]tasting anything good.
26 Together they (CK)lie down in the dust,
And (CL)maggots cover them.

27 “Behold, I know your thoughts,
And the plots you devise against me.
28 For you say, ‘Where is the house of (CM)the nobleman,
And where is the (CN)tent, the dwelling places of the wicked?’
29 Have you not asked travelers,
And do you not examine their [am]evidence?
30 For the (CO)wicked person is spared [an]a day of disaster;
They [ao]are led away from (CP)a day of fury.
31 Who [ap]confronts him with his actions,
And who repays him for what he has done?
32 When he is carried to the grave,
People will keep watch over his tomb.
33 The (CQ)clods of the valley will [aq]gently cover him;
Moreover, (CR)all mankind will [ar]follow after him,
While countless others go before him.
34 So how dare you give me empty (CS)comfort?
For your answers remain nothing but falsehood!”

Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job

22 Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded,

“Can a strong (CT)man be of use to God,
Or a wise one be useful to himself?
Is it any pleasure to [as]the Almighty if you are righteous,
Or gain if you make your ways blameless?
Is it because of your [at]reverence that He punishes you,
That He (CU)enters into judgment against you?
Is (CV)your wickedness not abundant,
And is there no end to your guilty deeds?
For you have (CW)seized pledges from your brothers without cause,
And [au](CX)stripped people naked.
You have (CY)given the weary no water to drink,
And you have (CZ)withheld bread from the hungry.
But the earth (DA)belongs to the (DB)powerful man,
And (DC)the one who is honorable dwells on it.
You have sent (DD)widows away empty,
And the [av]strength of (DE)orphans has been crushed.
10 Therefore (DF)traps surround you,
And sudden (DG)dread terrifies you,
11 Or (DH)darkness, so that you cannot see,
And a (DI)flood of water covers you.

12 “Is God not (DJ)in the height of heaven?
Look also at the [aw]highest stars, how high they are!
13 But you say, ‘(DK)What does God know?
Can He judge through the thick darkness?
14 (DL)Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see;
And He walks on the [ax]vault of heaven.’
15 Will you keep to the ancient path
Which (DM)wicked people have walked,
16 Who were snatched away (DN)before their time,
Whose (DO)foundations were [ay]washed away by a river?
17 They (DP)said to God, ‘Go away from us!’
And ‘What can [az]the Almighty do to them?’
18 Yet He (DQ)filled their houses with good things;
But (DR)the advice of the wicked is far from me.
19 The (DS)righteous see and are glad,
And the innocent mock them, saying,
20 ‘Truly our enemies are eliminated,
And (DT)fire has consumed their [ba]abundance.’

21 (DU)Be reconciled with Him, and be at peace;
Thereby good will come to you.
22 Please receive [bb](DV)instruction from His mouth,
And put His words in your heart.
23 If you (DW)return to [bc]the Almighty, you will be [bd]restored;
If you (DX)remove injustice far from your tent,
24 And (DY)put your [be]gold in the dust,
And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks,
25 Then [bf]the Almighty will be your [bg]gold
And abundant silver to you.
26 For then you will (DZ)take pleasure in [bh]the Almighty
And lift up your face to God.
27 You will (EA)pray to Him, and (EB)He will hear you;
And you will pay your vows.
28 You will also decide something, and it will be established for you;
And (EC)light will shine on your ways.
29 When [bi]they have brought you low, you will speak with [bj]confidence,
And He will save the [bk](ED)humble person.
30 He will rescue one who is not innocent,
And he will be (EE)rescued due to the cleanness of your hands.”

Job Says He Longs for God

23 Then Job responded,

“Even today my (EF)complaint is rebellion;
[bl]His hand is (EG)heavy despite my groaning.
Oh that I knew how to find Him,
That I might come to His home!
I would (EH)present my case before Him
And fill my mouth with arguments.
I would learn the words which He would [bm]answer,
And perceive what He would tell me.
Would He contend with me by (EI)the greatness of His power?
No, surely He would pay attention to me.
There the upright would (EJ)argue with Him;
And I [bn]would be (EK)free of my Judge forever.

“Behold, I go forward but He is not there,
And backward, but I (EL)cannot perceive Him;
When He acts on the left, I cannot see Him;
He turns to the right, but I cannot see Him.
10 But He knows the [bo]way I take;
When He has (EM)put me to the test, I will come out as gold.
11 My foot has (EN)held on to His path;
I have kept His way and not turned aside.
12 I have not [bp]failed the command of His lips;
I have treasured the (EO)words of His mouth [bq]more than my [br]necessary food.
13 But He is unique, and who can [bs]make Him turn?
Whatever His soul desires, He does it.
14 For He carries out what is destined for me,
And many such destinies are with Him.
15 Therefore, I would be terrified at His presence;
When I consider this, I am frightened of Him.
16 It is God who has made my (EP)heart faint,
And the Almighty who has terrified me,
17 But I (EQ)am not destroyed by darkness,
Nor by (ER)deep gloom which covers me.

Job Says God Seems to Ignore Wrongs

24 (ES)Why are [bt]times not stored up by the Almighty,
And why do those who know Him not see (ET)His [bu]days?
People (EU)remove landmarks;
They seize and [bv]devour flocks.
They drive away the donkeys of (EV)orphans;
They seize the (EW)widow’s ox as a pledge.
They push (EX)the needy aside from the road;
The (EY)poor of the land have to hide themselves together.
Behold, like (EZ)wild donkeys in the wilderness
They (FA)go out scavenging for food in their activity,
As [bw]bread for their children in the desert.
They harvest their feed in the field
And glean the vineyard of the wicked.
(FB)They spend the night naked, without clothing,
And have no covering against the cold.
They are wet from the mountain rains,
And they hug the rock for lack of a shelter.
Others snatch an (FC)orphan from the breast,
And they seize it as a pledge against the poor.
10 The poor move about naked without clothing,
And they carry sheaves, while going hungry.
11 Within the walls they produce oil;
They tread wine presses but go thirsty.
12 From the city people groan,
And the souls of the wounded cry for help;
Yet God (FD)does not pay attention to the offensiveness.

13 [bx]Others have been with those who rebel against the light;
They do not want to know its ways
Nor stay in its paths.
14 The murderer (FE)arises at dawn;
He (FF)kills the poor and the needy,
And at night he is like a thief.
15 The eye of the (FG)adulterer watches for [by]twilight,
Saying, ‘No eye will see me.’
And he [bz]disguises his face.
16 In the darkness they (FH)dig into houses,
They (FI)shut themselves up by day;
They do not know the light.
17 For the morning is the same to him as thick darkness,
For he is familiar with the (FJ)terrors of thick darkness.

18 “They are [ca](FK)insignificant on the surface of the water;
Their plot of land on the earth is (FL)cursed.
They do not turn [cb]toward the (FM)vineyards.
19 Dryness and heat (FN)snatch away the snow waters,
As [cc](FO)Sheol snatches those who have sinned.
20 A [cd](FP)mother will forget him;
The (FQ)maggot feeds sweetly until he is (FR)no longer remembered.
And injustice will be broken (FS)like a tree.
21 He wrongs the [ce]infertile woman,
And does no good for (FT)the widow.
22 But He drags off the mighty by (FU)His power;
He rises, but (FV)no one has assurance of life.
23 He provides them (FW)with security, and they are supported;
And His (FX)eyes are on their ways.
24 They are exalted a (FY)little while, then they are gone;
Moreover, they are (FZ)brought low, and like everything they are gathered up;
Like the heads of grain they wither.
25 Now if it is not so, (GA)who can prove me a liar,
And make my speech worthless?”

Bildad Says Mankind Is Inferior

25 Then Bildad the Shuhite responded,

(GB)Dominion and awe [cf]belong to Him
Who makes peace in (GC)His heights.
Is there any number to (GD)His troops?
And upon whom does His light not rise?
How then can mankind be (GE)righteous with God?
Or how can anyone who is born of woman be (GF)pure?
If even (GG)the moon has no brightness
And the (GH)stars are not pure in His sight,
How much less (GI)man, that (GJ)maggot,
And a son of man, that worm!”

Job Rebukes Bildad

26 Then Job responded,

“What a help you are to [cg](GK)the weak!
You have saved the arm (GL)without strength!
What advice you have given to one without wisdom!
What helpful insight you have abundantly [ch]provided!
To whom have you uttered words?
And whose [ci]spirit was expressed through you?

The Greatness of God

“The [cj](GM)departed spirits are made to tremble
Under the waters and their inhabitants.
[ck](GN)Sheol is naked before Him,
And [cl](GO)Abaddon has no covering.
He (GP)stretches out the north over empty space
And hangs the earth on nothing.
He (GQ)wraps up the waters in His clouds,
And the cloud does not burst under them.
He [cm](GR)obscures the face of the [cn]full moon
And spreads His cloud over it.
10 He has inscribed a (GS)circle on the surface of the waters
At the (GT)boundary of light and darkness.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble
And are amazed at His rebuke.
12 With His power He (GU)quieted the sea,
And by His (GV)understanding He shattered [co](GW)Rahab.
13 By His breath the (GX)heavens are [cp]cleared;
His hand has pierced (GY)the fleeing serpent.
14 Behold, these are the fringes of His ways;
And how faint (GZ)a word we hear of Him!
But His mighty (HA)thunder, who can understand?”

Job Affirms His Righteousness

27 Job again took up his (HB)discourse and said,

“As God lives, (HC)who has taken away my right,
And the Almighty, (HD)who has embittered my soul,
For as long as [cq]life is in me,
And the [cr](HE)breath of God is in my nostrils,
My lips certainly will not speak unjustly,
Nor will (HF)my tongue mutter deceit.
Far be it from me that I should declare you right;
Until I die, (HG)I will not [cs]give up my integrity.
I have (HH)kept hold of my righteousness and will not let it go.
My heart does not rebuke any of my days.

The State of the Godless

“May my enemy be as the wicked,
And [ct]my opponent as the criminal.
For what is (HI)the hope of the godless when he makes an end of life,
When God requires (HJ)his [cu]life?
Will God (HK)hear his cry
When (HL)distress comes upon him?
10 Or will he take (HM)pleasure in the Almighty?
Will he call on God at all times?
11 I will instruct you in the [cv]power of God;
What is with the Almighty I will not conceal.
12 Behold, all of you have seen it;
Why then do you talk of nothing?

13 “This is (HN)the portion of a wicked person from God,
And the inheritance which (HO)tyrants receive from the Almighty:
14 Though his sons are many, [cw]they are destined (HP)for the sword;
And his (HQ)descendants will not be satisfied with bread.
15 His survivors will be buried because of the plague,
And [cx]their (HR)widows will not be able to weep.
16 Though he piles up silver like dust,
And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay,
17 He may prepare it, (HS)but the righteous will wear it
And the innocent will divide the silver.
18 He has built his (HT)house like the [cy]spider’s web,
Or a hut which the watchman has made.
19 He lies down rich, but never [cz]again;
He opens his eyes, and (HU)it no longer exists.
20 (HV)Terrors overtake him like a flood;
A storm steals him away (HW)in the night.
21 The east (HX)wind carries him away, and he is gone;
For it sweeps him (HY)away from his place.
22 For it will hurl at him (HZ)without mercy;
He will certainly try to (IA)flee from its [da]power.
23 People will [db]clap their hands at him,
And will (IB)whistle at him from their places.

Job Tells of Earth’s Treasures

28 “Certainly there is a [dc]mine for silver
And a place [dd]for refining gold.
Iron is taken from the dust,
And copper is smelted from rock.
Man puts an end to darkness,
And (IC)to the farthest limit he searches out
The rock in gloom and deep shadow.
He [de]sinks a shaft away from [df]inhabited areas,
Forgotten by the foot;
They hang and swing, away from people.
[dg]From the earth comes food,
And underneath, it is turned over like fire.
Its rocks are the [dh]source of sapphires,
And its dust contains gold.
No bird of prey knows the path,
Nor has the falcon’s eye caught sight of it.
The [di]proud animals have not trodden it,
Nor has the lion passed over it.
He puts his hand on the flint;
He overturns the mountains at the [dj]base.
10 He carves out channels through the rocks,
And his eye sees anything precious.
11 He dams up the streams from [dk]flowing,
And brings to light what is hidden.

The Search for Wisdom Is Harder

12 “But (ID)where can wisdom be found?
And where is the place of understanding?
13 (IE)Mankind does not know its value,
Nor is it found in the land of the living.
14 The ocean depth says, ‘It is not in me’;
And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’
15 (IF)Pure gold cannot be given in exchange for it,
Nor can silver be weighed as its price.
16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,
In precious onyx, or sapphire.
17 (IG)Gold or glass cannot equal it,
Nor can it be exchanged for articles of pure gold.
18 Coral and crystal are not to be mentioned;
And the acquisition of (IH)wisdom is more valuable than pearls.
19 The topaz of [dl]Cush cannot equal it,
Nor can it be valued in (II)pure gold.
20 (IJ)Where then does wisdom come from?
And where is this place of understanding?
21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living creature,
And concealed from the birds of the sky.
22 [dm](IK)Abaddon and Death say,
‘With our ears we have heard a report of it.’

23 (IL)God understands its way,
And He knows its place.
24 For He (IM)looks to the ends of the earth;
He sees everything under the heavens.
25 When He imparted (IN)weight to the wind,
And (IO)assessed the waters by measure,
26 When He made a (IP)limit for the rain,
And a course for the (IQ)thunderbolt,
27 Then He saw it and declared it;
He established it and also searched it out.
28 And to mankind He said, ‘Behold, the (IR)fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;
And to turn away from evil is understanding.’”

Job’s Past Was Glorious

29 Job again took up his (IS)discourse and said,

“Oh that I were as in months gone by,
As in the days when God (IT)watched over me;
When (IU)His lamp shone over my head,
And (IV)by His light I walked through darkness;
Just as I was in the days of my youth,
When the (IW)protection of God was over my tent;
When [dn]the Almighty was still with me,
And my children were around me;
When my steps were bathed in (IX)cream,
And the (IY)rock poured out streams of oil for me!
When I went out to (IZ)the gate of the city,
When I [do]took my seat in the public square,
The young men saw me and hid themselves,
And the old men arose and stood.
The leaders (JA)stopped talking
And (JB)put their hands on their mouths;
10 The voices of the prominent people were [dp](JC)hushed,
And their (JD)tongues stuck to their palates.
11 For when (JE)an ear heard, it called me blessed,
And when an eye saw, it testified in support of me,
12 Because I saved (JF)the poor who cried for help,
And the (JG)orphan who had no helper.
13 The blessing of the one who (JH)was about to perish came upon me,
And I made the (JI)widow’s heart sing for joy.
14 I (JJ)put on righteousness, and it clothed me;
My justice was like a robe and a headband.
15 I was (JK)eyes to those who were blind,
And feet to those who [dq]could not walk.
16 I was a father to (JL)the poor,
And I investigated the case which I did not know.
17 I (JM)broke the jaws of the wicked
And rescued the prey from his teeth.
18 Then I [dr]thought, ‘I will die with my [ds]family,
And I will multiply my days as the sand.
19 My (JN)root is spread out to the waters,
And (JO)dew lies on my branch all night.
20 My glory is ever new with me,
And my (JP)bow is renewed in my hand.’

21 “To me (JQ)they listened and waited,
And they kept silent for my advice.
22 After my words (JR)they did not speak again,
And (JS)my speech dropped on them.
23 They waited for me as for the rain,
And opened their mouths as for the late rain.
24 I smiled at them when they did not believe,
And they did not look at [dt]my kindness ungraciously.
25 I chose a way for them and sat as (JT)chief,
And lived as a king among the troops,
As one who (JU)comforted the mourners.
