ただ神の力が現されるため
9 さて、道を歩いていた時のこと、イエスは生まれつきの盲人をごらんになりました。 2 そこで、弟子たちが尋ねました。「先生。どうしてこの人は、生まれつき目が見えないのですか。本人が罪を犯したからですか。それとも両親ですか。」 3 「いや、そのどちらでもありません。ただ神の力が現されるためです。 4 わたしたちは、わたしをお遣わしになった方に命じられた仕事を、急いでやり遂げなければなりません。もうすぐ夜が来ます。そうしたら、もう仕事はできないのですから。 5 しかし、まだこの世にわたしがいる間は、わたしが光となります。」 6 こう言われると、イエスは地面につばをして泥を作り、それを盲人の目に塗って、 7 言われました。「さあ、シロアムの池に行って洗い落としなさい」〔「シロアム」とは、「遣わされた者」の意味〕。イエスが言われたとおりにすると、どうでしょう。彼は見えるようになって戻って来たではありませんか。 8 近所の人や、彼が盲目の物ごいだったことを知っている人は仰天し、「これが、あの人かい」と口をそろえて言いました。 9 ほかの人は、「そうだ」と言う人もいれば、「いや、あいつのはずはない。だが実によく似ている」と言う人もいました。すると当の本人が、「何を言っているんだ。おれだよ」と言いました。 10 人々はあっけにとられながらも、「いったいどうしたのだ。どうやって見えるようになったのか」と矢つぎばやに尋ねました。 11 その男は答えました。「イエスという方が泥をこねて目に塗り、『シロアムの池に行って、泥を洗い落としなさい』と言われたのさ。それでそのとおりにすると、見えるようになったんだよ。」 12 「その人は今どこにいるんだ。」「さあ、知らないな。」
13 人々は、男をパリサイ人たちのところへ連れて行きました。 14 ところで、この日は安息日でした。 15 パリサイ人たちにどうして目が見えるようになったのかを尋ねられて、男はそのいきさつを、くわしく話しました。 16 パリサイ人のある者は、「そのイエスという者は、神から遣わされた者ではない。安息日に仕事なんかしたんだから」と断言しました。しかし、「罪人にすぎない普通の人間に、こんな奇跡が行えるだろうか……」と疑問を投げかける者もいます。意見は真っ二つに分かれました。 17 しかたなく、その盲目だった男に、「おまえの目を開けてくれた人のことをどう思うか」と聞きました。「きっと神様が遣わした預言者です」と男は答えました。 18 しかし、ユダヤ人の指導者たちは、盲目だった男が見えるようになったことを、どうしても信じようとはしません。とうとう両親まで呼び出し、 19 確かめることにしました。「この男は息子だな。ほんとうに生まれつき目が見えなかったのか。だったら、どうして見えるようになったのだ。」 20 両親は答えました。「はい、確かに息子でございます。この子は生まれつき目が見えませんでした。 21 けれども、どうして見えるようになったのか、どなたがこれの目を開けてくださったのかは、少しも存じません。どうぞ本人からじかに聞いてみてください。もう一人前の大人ですから、自分で説明できるでしょう。」 22-23 こう言ったのは、ユダヤ人の指導者たちがこわかったからです。指導者たちはすでに、イエスをキリストと告白する者は、だれかれの区別なく会堂から追放すると公表していたのです。
24 指導者たちは、男をもう一度呼び寄せ、きつく言い渡しました。「イエスなどではなく、神をあがめなさい。あいつは悪党だ。」 25 「さあ、あの方が善人か悪人かは、私にはわかりません。ただ、これだけははっきりしています。私は今まで目が見えなかったのに、今は見えることです。」 26 「だが、あいつは何をした？ どうやっておまえの目を開けた？」 27 男はまたかと腹を立て、大声で言いました。「そのことは、もう話したではありませんか。お聞きにならなかったのですか。もう一度言えとは、どういうことでしょう。あの方の弟子にでもなりたいのですか。」
28 こう言われて、指導者たちは男をののしりました。「おまえこそあいつの弟子のくせに。われわれはモーセの弟子だ。 29 神はまちがいなくモーセにお語りになった。しかし、あいつはどこの馬の骨だかわからない。」
30 「これは驚きました。あの方は盲人の目を開けることができるんですよ。なのに、あの方のことは何も知らないとおっしゃる。 31 神様は悪人の言うことはお聞きになりません。しかし、神様を礼拝し、お心にかなうことを行う者には、耳を傾けてくださるんじゃありませんか。 32 世の初めからこのかた、生まれつきの盲人の目を開けた人など、いたためしがありません。 33 神様から遣わされた方でなければ、こんなことはできないはずです。」 34 こうまで言われて、彼らは怒りを爆発させました。「このろくでなしめ！ われわれを教えようというのか！」とどなりつけたあげく、男を外に追い出してしまいました。
35 そのいきさつを伝え聞いたイエスは、男を捜し、見つけ出されると、「あなたはメシヤを信じますか」とお聞きになりました。 36 「先生。どなたがメシヤ様なのでしょうか。教えてください。ぜひ信じたいのです。」 37 「もうその人に会っているのですよ。あなたと話しているわたしがメシヤなのです。」 38 「主よ。信じます。」男はそう言って、イエスを礼拝しました。 39 するとイエスは言われました。「わたしがこの世に来たのは、心の目の見えない人を見えるようにするため、また、見えると思い込んでいる人に、実は盲目だということをわからせるためなのです。」 40 ちょうどその場に居合わせたパリサイ人たちが、けげんな顔で尋ねました。「じゃあ、私たちも盲目だと言うのか。」 41 「もしあなたがたが盲目だったら、罪に問われないですんだでしょう。しかし、何もかもわかっているとあくまで言いはるので、あなたがたの罪はそのまま残るのです。」
良い羊飼いであるイエス
10 「よく言っておきます。羊の囲いの中に門から入らないで、柵を乗り越えて忍び込む者は強盗です。 2 羊飼いなら堂々と門から入って来るはずです。 3 門番も羊飼いには門を開けてくれます。彼の声を聞くと、羊は回りに駆け寄って来ます。羊飼いは一匹一匹自分の羊の名を呼んで連れ出すのです。 4 先頭に立つのは羊飼い、羊はそのあとについて行きます。その声を知っているからです。 5 知らない人にはついて行かず、反対に逃げ出します。聞き覚えのない声だからです。」 6 イエスがこのたとえ話をなさっても、聞いている人々には、どういう意味かさっぱりわかりませんでした。
7 そこでイエスは説明なさいました。「いいですか。わたしが羊の出入りする門なのです。 8 わたしより前に来た人々はみな、どろぼうか強盗です。羊は、彼らの言うことは聞きませんでした。 9 わたしは門なのです。この門から入る者は救われます。また、安心して出入りができ、緑の牧草を見つけるのです。 10 強盗は、盗んだり、殺したり、滅ぼしたりするために来ます。しかしわたしが来たのは、いのちをあふれるほど豊かに与えるためです。 11 わたしはまた、良い羊飼いです。良い羊飼いは羊のためにはいのちも捨てます。 12 雇い人は、狼が来れば羊を捨てて、すぐに逃げ出します。彼らは羊の持ち主でも、羊飼いでもないからです。こうして狼は羊にとびかかり、群れを追い散らしてしまいます。 13 雇い人はお金で雇われているだけで、羊のことをほんとうに心にかけているわけではないので、平気で逃げてしまうのです。 14 わたしは良い羊飼いであり、自分の羊を知っています。また、羊もわたしを知っています。 15 わたしの父がわたしを知っておられ、わたしも父を知っているのと同じです。わたしは羊のためにいのちを捨てるのです。 16 このほかに、別の囲いにも羊がいます。その羊をも導かなければなりません。やがてその羊も、わたしの声に注意深く聞き従い、一人の羊飼いのもとに一つの群れとなるのです。 17 わたしが再びいのちを得るためにいのちを投げ出すからこそ、父はわたしを愛してくださいます。 18 だれもわたしの意に反して、わたしを殺すことはできません。わたしが、自分から進んでいのちを捨てるのです。わたしには、いのちを自由に捨て、もう一度それを得る権威と力があるからです。父がこの権威を下さったのです。」
19 この話のことで、ユダヤ人の指導者たちの意見は、また真っ二つに分かれました。 20 「あいつは悪霊につかれているか、それとも気が変になっているかだ。あんなやつの言うことに耳を貸す必要なんかない」と息まく者があるかと思えば、 21 「いいや、とても悪霊につかれた者のことばとは思えない。だいいち、悪霊に盲人の目を開けることなんかできるはずもないだろう」と言い出す者もいました。
宮きよめの祭り
22-23 時は冬でした。宮きよめの祭りがあり、イエスもエルサレムにおられました。ちょうど、宮の中のソロモンの廊と呼ばれる所を歩いておられると、 24 ユダヤ人の指導者たちが来て、回りを取り囲みました。「いつまで気をもませるつもりですか。キリスト（救い主）なら、はっきりそう言ったらいいでしょう。」 25 彼らの質問に、イエスはお答えになりました。「そのことならもう話しました。あなたがたは信じませんでしたが。わたしは、父の御名によって何度も奇跡を行ったでしょう。証拠はそれで十分なはずです。 26 それでも、あなたがたはわたしを信じないのです。あなたがたはわたしの羊の群れに属さないのですから、しかたがありません。 27 わたしの羊はわたしの声を聞き分けます。わたしは彼らを知っているし、彼らもわたしにはついて来ます。 28 わたしは彼らに永遠のいのちを与えるのです。彼らは絶対に滅びることがなく、また、だれもわたしの手から彼らを奪い取ることはできません。 29 父がわたしに下さった群れなのですから。父はだれよりも力があります。わたしの羊をさらうことなど、だれにもできません。 30 わたしと父とは一つです。」
31 これを聞いたユダヤ人の指導者たちは、やにわに石をつかみました。イエスを打ち殺そうというのです。 32 「わたしは神のお心どおり、たくさんの良いわざを行って人々を助けただけです。それのどこが悪くて殺されなければならないのでしょうか。」 33 「なにも良い行いを責めているわけではない。神を汚したからだ。ただの人間のくせに、神だなどとぬかしおって！」 34 「あなたがたの律法には、『わたしは言った。「あなたがたは神々だ」』（詩篇82・6）と書いてあるではありませんか。 35 無効になることのありえない聖書が、神のことばを受けた人々のことを神々と呼んでいるのです。 36 とすれば、父がきよめ分かち、この世にお遣わしになった者が『わたしは神の子だ』と言ったからといって、どうして神を汚すことになるのですか。 37 わたしが神のみわざを行っていないのなら、わたしを信じなくてかまいません。 38 しかし、もし神のみわざを行っているのなら、わたしを信じないにしても、みわざそのものを信用しなさい。父がわたしのうちにおられ、わたしが父のうちにいることがはっきりわかるでしょう。」 39 彼らが、またもイエスを捕らえようとしたので、イエスはうまくその場を切り抜け、エルサレムをあとになさいました。
40 そしてヨルダン川を渡り、ヨハネが最初にバプテスマ（洗礼）を授けていたあたりに滞在されましたが、 41 ここでも、多くの人が、あとからあとから詰めかけて来ます。彼らは口々に言いました。「ヨハネは一つも奇跡を行わなかったけれど、この方について話したことは、何もかもそのとおりになった。」 42 こうして多くの人が、イエスこそメシヤ（救い主）だと信じるようになったのです。
ラザロの死
11 1-2 さて、ラザロという名前の人が病気にかかっていました。彼はマリヤとその姉マルタの兄弟で、ベタニヤという村に住んでいました。このマリヤは、イエスの足に高価な香油を注ぎ、それを髪でぬぐったことで知られる女性です。そのマリヤの兄弟ラザロが床に伏していました。 3 マルタとマリヤが、イエスのもとに使いをよこしました。「先生。あなたが心にかけてくださっているラザロが重い病気にかかり、明日をも知れない状態です。」 4 この知らせを聞いたイエスは言われました。「この病気は、ラザロの死で終わるものではありません。神の栄光が現されるためです。それによって神の子が、栄光を受けるのです。」 5 イエスは、マルタたち三人を心から愛しておられました。 6 けれども、なぜか、なお二日間そこにとどまって、なかなか腰を上げようとはなさいません。 7 二日たって、ようやく、「さあ、ユダヤに行きましょう」と弟子たちに言われました。 8 ところが、もうれつな反対が返ってきたのです。「なんてことを、先生！ つい先日、ユダヤ人の指導者たちが先生を殺そうとしたのをお忘れですか。それなのに、またのこのこと出かけて行くおつもりですか。」 9 「昼間は十二時間あります。その間に歩けば安全で、つまずくこともありません。 10 ところが、夜歩いたらとても危険です。暗くて足を踏みはずすかもしれませんから。」イエスはこう言って、 11 さらに続けられました。「友のラザロが眠っています。彼を起こしに行かなくては。」 12-13 これを、ラザロがぐっすり眠ったものと勘違いした弟子たちは、「じゃあ、病状はよくなっているんですね」と言いました。しかしイエスは、ラザロが死んだと言われたのです。 14 そこで、今度ははっきりと言われました。「ラザロは死んだのです。 15 わたしがその場に居合わせなくてよかったのです。これでまた、あなたがたがわたしを信じる機会が増えるのですから。さあ、彼のところへ出かけましょう。」 16 そこで、「ふたご」とあだ名が付けられているトマスが、「みんなで行って、危ないことがあるなら、先生とごいっしょに死のうじゃないか」と、仲間の弟子たちに言いました。
17 一行がベタニヤに着いてみると、ラザロはすでに墓に葬られ、四日もたっていました。 18 ベタニヤは、エルサレムからわずか三キロほどの所だったので、 19 エルサレムからも大ぜいのユダヤ人たちが弔問に詰めかけていました。マルタとマリヤが慰めのことばを受けているところへ、 20 イエスの到着が知らされました。マルタはそれを聞くと、取る物も取りあえず、迎えに行きました。ところが、マリヤは家の中にじっと座ったままでした。 21 マルタはイエスに向かって訴えました。「先生。あなたがいてくださったら、ラザロは死なずにすんだでしょうに。 22 今でも、あなたが神様にお求めになるなら、神様はそのとおりにしてくださるでしょう。」 23 イエスは言われました。「そのとおりです。ラザロは生き返るのです。」 24 マルタは言いました。「はい。いつかすべての人が復活する日には、もちろん……。」 25 しかし、イエスは言われました。「このわたしが、死人を生き返らせ、もう一度いのちを与えるのです。わたしを信じる者は、たとえほかの人と同じように死んでも、また生きるのです。 26 わたしを信じて永遠のいのちを持っている者は、決して滅びることがありません。このことを信じますか、マルタ。」 27 「はい、先生。あなたこそ、長いあいだ待ち続けてきた神の子キリストだと信じております。」 28 マルタは家に戻り、マリヤをわきへ呼んでそっと耳うちしました。「先生がすぐそこにいらしていて、あなたを呼んでおられるわよ。」 29 そこでマリヤは、すぐにイエスのところへ出て行きました。
ラザロが生き返る
30 さて、イエスはまだ村に入らず、マルタが出迎えた場所におられました。 31 マリヤを慰めていたユダヤ人たちは、彼女がそそくさと出て行くのを見て、きっと墓へ泣きに行くのだろうと思って、あとについて行きました。 32 マリヤはイエスのところまで来ると、くずおれるように足もとにひれ伏し、涙ながらに言いました。「ああ、先生。あなたさえいてくださったら、ラザロは、ラザロはまだ生きていたでしょうに。」 33 イエスは、目の前でマリヤが泣き伏し、ユダヤ人たちもいっしょに嘆き悲しんでいるのに強く心を動かされ、 34 「ラザロはどこですか」とお聞きになりました。「来て、ごらんください。」 35 イエスの目に涙があふれました。 36 そこで、ユダヤ人たちはこう言い合いました。「お気の毒に。どんなにラザロを愛しておられたことだろう。」 37 しかし、「盲人の目を開けたこの人が、ラザロを生かしておくことはできなかったのかね」と、非難めいて言う人もいました。
38 これを聞いたイエスは、またも心に深い憤りを感じながら、墓に着きました。それはほら穴で、入り口には重い石が立てかけてありました。 39 「さあ、石をわきにどけなさい。」イエスは人々をうながされました。マルタがあわてて止めました。「でも、もうひどいにおいがしています。なにしろ、死んでから今日で四日ですもの。」 40 イエスはマルタにおっしゃいました。「もし信じるなら神のすばらしい奇跡を見る、と言ったはずです。」 41 人々は言われるままに石を取りのけました。イエスは天を見上げ、「父よ。願いを聞いてくださってありがとうございます。 42 あなたがいつもわたしの願いを聞いてくださることはわかっています。ただ、あなたがわたしをお遣わしになったことを、ここに立っているみんなが信じるように、こう申し上げたのです」と祈られました。 43 それから、大声で、「ラザロよ。出て来なさい！」とお命じになりました。 44 すると、どうでしょう。ラザロが、手足を布で巻かれた姿のまま出て来たではありませんか！ 顔も布で包まれたままです。イエスはあっけにとられている人々に言われました。「さあ、早く布をほどいてやって、帰らせなさい。」
45 マリヤについて来てこの出来事を見た多くのユダヤ人が、イエスを信じるようになりました。 46 しかし、パリサイ人たちのところへ行き、事細かにこのことを報告する者も何人かいました。
47 そこで祭司長やパリサイ人たちは、この問題を協議するため、さっそく議会を召集し議論しました。「あの男が奇跡を行っているというのに、いったい何をぐずぐずしているのか。 48 このまま放っておいたら、国民一人残らずあの男を信じるようになってしまうぞ。そんなことにでもなったら、ローマ軍が踏み込んで来てわれわれを殺し、われわれの土地も国民も乗っ取るだろう。」 49 すると、その年の大祭司カヤパが、業をにやして言いました。「ばかを言うな。こんなこともわからないのか。 50 全国民の代わりに、彼一人に死んでもらえば事はすむのだ。国民全体が滅びるなんて、冗談じゃない。」 51 イエスが全国民の代わりに死ぬことを、大祭司が預言したのです。カヤパは別の動機から、無意識のうちに、そのように言ったのです。 52 これはイエスが、イスラエル人ばかりか、世界中に散らされているすべての神の子どもたちのためにも死んでくださるという預言でした。 53 この時から、ユダヤ人の指導者たちは、イエスを殺す計画をあれこれ練り始めました。
54 そんなこともあって、イエスはユダヤ人の間でおおっぴらに活動することをやめ、エルサレムをあとにされました。そして荒野に近いエフライムの村で、しばらく弟子たちと共に身を潜めておられました。
55 ユダヤ人の過越の祭りが近づきました。この時は、多くの人々が各地からエルサレムに集まります。みな祭りの始まる前にきよめの儀式をすませようと、数日前には着くように出かけて来るのです。 56 人々は、イエスに会いたいと思いました。宮のあちこちで、「どうだろうね。あの方は祭りにいらっしゃるかな」と、しきりにうわさし合う声が聞こえます。 57 一方、祭司長やパリサイ人たちはイエスを逮捕することしか頭になく、「イエスを見かけた者は直ちに届け出よ」という命令を出していました。

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi,(A) who sinned,(B) this man(C) or his parents,(D) that he was born blind?”
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.(E) 4 As long as it is day,(F) we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”(G)
6 After saying this, he spit(H) on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam”(I) (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.(J)
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”(K) 9 Some claimed that he was.
Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”
But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”(L)
12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.(M) 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.(N) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”(O)
But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”(P) So they were divided.(Q)
17 Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”(R)
18 They(S) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19 “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,(T) who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out(U) of the synagogue.(V) 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”(W)
24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,”(X) they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”(Y)
25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered, “I have told you already(Z) and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!(AA) 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”(AB)
30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.(AC) 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God,(AD) he could do nothing.”
34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;(AE) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.(AF)
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe(AG) in the Son of Man?”(AH)
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”(AI)
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”(AJ)
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.(AK)
39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(AL) I have come into this world,(AM) so that the blind will see(AN) and those who see will become blind.”(AO)
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”(AP)
41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.(AQ)
The Good Shepherd and His Sheep
10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.(AR) 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.(AS) 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.(AT) He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.(AU) 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.(AV) 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech,(AW) but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.(AX)
7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am(AY) the gate(AZ) for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me(BA) are thieves and robbers,(BB) but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[b] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,(BC) and have it to the full.(BD)
11 “I am(BE) the good shepherd.(BF) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(BG) 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.(BH) Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
14 “I am the good shepherd;(BI) I know my sheep(BJ) and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father(BK)—and I lay down my life for the sheep.(BL) 16 I have other sheep(BM) that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock(BN) and one shepherd.(BO) 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life(BP)—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.(BQ) I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”(BR)
19 The Jews who heard these words were again divided.(BS) 20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed(BT) and raving mad.(BU) Why listen to him?”
21 But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon.(BV) Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”(BW)
Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims
22 Then came the Festival of Dedication[c] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.(BX) 24 The Jews(BY) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”(BZ)
25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you,(CA) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,(CB) 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.(CC) 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,(CD) and they follow me.(CE) 28 I give them eternal life,(CF) and they shall never perish;(CG) no one will snatch them out of my hand.(CH) 29 My Father, who has given them to me,(CI) is greater than all[d];(CJ) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”(CK)
31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,(CL) 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”
33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”(CM)
34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law,(CN) ‘I have said you are “gods”’[e]?(CO) 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God(CP) came—and Scripture cannot be set aside(CQ)— 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart(CR) as his very own(CS) and sent into the world?(CT) Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?(CU) 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.(CV) 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”(CW) 39 Again they tried to seize him,(CX) but he escaped their grasp.(CY)
40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan(CZ) to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign,(DA) all that John said about this man was true.”(DB) 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.(DC)
The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(DD) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(DE) 2 (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(DF) 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(DG) is sick.”
4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(DH) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, 7 and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(DI)
8 “But Rabbi,”(DJ) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(DK) and yet you are going back?”
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(DL) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(DM) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(DN) but I am going there to wake him up.”
12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(DO)
14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16 Then Thomas(DP) (also known as Didymus[f]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(DQ) 18 Now Bethany(DR) was less than two miles[g] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(DS) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(DT)
21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(DU) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(DV)
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(DW) at the last day.”(DX)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am(DY) the resurrection and the life.(DZ) The one who believes(EA) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(EB) in me will never die.(EC) Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(ED) the Son of God,(EE) who is to come into the world.”(EF)
28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(EG) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(EH) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(EI) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(EJ)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(EK) in spirit and troubled.(EL) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35 Jesus wept.(EM)
36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(EN)
37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(EO) have kept this man from dying?”(EP)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(EQ) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(ER) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(ES)
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(ET) you will see the glory of God?”(EU)
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(EV) and said, “Father,(EW) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(EX) that they may believe that you sent me.”(EY)
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(EZ) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(FA) and a cloth around his face.(FB)
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(FC) and had seen what Jesus did,(FD) believed in him.(FE) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(FF) called a meeting(FG) of the Sanhedrin.(FH)
“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(FI) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(FJ) who was high priest that year,(FK) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(FL)
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(FM) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(FN)
54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(FO) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(FP) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(FQ) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(FR) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.
