The Fall of Jerusalem(A)(B)(C)

52 Zedekiah(D) was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother’s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah.(E) He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, just as Jehoiakim(F) had done. It was because of the Lord’s anger that all this happened to Jerusalem and Judah,(G) and in the end he thrust them from his presence.(H)

Now Zedekiah rebelled(I) against the king of Babylon.

So in the ninth year of Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth(J) day of the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem(K) with his whole army. They encamped outside the city and built siege works(L) all around it.(M) The city was kept under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.

By the ninth day of the fourth month the famine in the city had become so severe that there was no food for the people to eat.(N) Then the city wall was broken through, and the whole army fled.(O) They left the city at night through the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden, though the Babylonians[a] were surrounding the city. They fled toward the Arabah,[b] but the Babylonian[c] army pursued King Zedekiah and overtook him in the plains of Jericho. All his soldiers were separated from him and scattered, and he was captured.(P)

He was taken to the king of Babylon at Riblah(Q) in the land of Hamath,(R) where he pronounced sentence on him. 10 There at Riblah the king of Babylon killed the sons(S) of Zedekiah before his eyes; he also killed all the officials of Judah. 11 Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon, where he put him in prison till the day of his death.(T)

12 On the tenth day of the fifth(U) month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan(V) commander of the imperial guard, who served the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 13 He set fire(W) to the temple(X) of the Lord, the royal palace and all the houses(Y) of Jerusalem. Every important building he burned down. 14 The whole Babylonian army, under the commander of the imperial guard, broke down all the walls(Z) around Jerusalem. 15 Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard carried into exile(AA) some of the poorest people and those who remained in the city, along with the rest of the craftsmen[d] and those who had deserted(AB) to the king of Babylon. 16 But Nebuzaradan left behind(AC) the rest of the poorest people of the land to work the vineyards and fields.

17 The Babylonians broke up the bronze pillars,(AD) the movable stands(AE) and the bronze Sea(AF) that were at the temple of the Lord and they carried all the bronze to Babylon.(AG) 18 They also took away the pots, shovels, wick trimmers, sprinkling bowls,(AH) dishes and all the bronze articles used in the temple service.(AI) 19 The commander of the imperial guard took away the basins, censers,(AJ) sprinkling bowls, pots, lampstands,(AK) dishes(AL) and bowls used for drink offerings(AM)—all that were made of pure gold or silver.(AN)

20 The bronze from the two pillars, the Sea and the twelve bronze bulls(AO) under it, and the movable stands, which King Solomon had made for the temple of the Lord, was more than could be weighed.(AP) 21 Each pillar was eighteen cubits high and twelve cubits in circumference[e]; each was four fingers thick, and hollow.(AQ) 22 The bronze capital(AR) on top of one pillar was five cubits[f] high and was decorated with a network and pomegranates(AS) of bronze all around. The other pillar, with its pomegranates, was similar. 23 There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides; the total number of pomegranates(AT) above the surrounding network was a hundred.(AU)

24 The commander of the guard took as prisoners Seraiah(AV) the chief priest, Zephaniah(AW) the priest next in rank and the three doorkeepers.(AX) 25 Of those still in the city, he took the officer in charge of the fighting men, and seven royal advisers. He also took the secretary(AY) who was chief officer in charge of conscripting the people of the land, sixty of whom were found in the city. 26 Nebuzaradan(AZ) the commander took them all and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 27 There at Riblah,(BA) in the land of Hamath, the king had them executed.

So Judah went into captivity, away(BB) from her land. 28 This is the number of the people Nebuchadnezzar carried into exile:(BC)

in the seventh year, 3,023 Jews;

29 in Nebuchadnezzar’s eighteenth year,

832 people from Jerusalem;

30 in his twenty-third year,

745 Jews taken into exile(BD) by Nebuzaradan the commander of the imperial guard.

There were 4,600 people in all.(BE)

Jehoiachin Released(BF)

31 In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin(BG) king of Judah, in the year Awel-Marduk became king of Babylon, on the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month, he released Jehoiachin king of Judah and freed him from prison. 32 He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon. 33 So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table.(BH) 34 Day by day the king of Babylon gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance(BI) as long as he lived, till the day of his death.

[g]How deserted(BJ) lies the city,
    once so full of people!(BK)
How like a widow(BL) is she,
    who once was great(BM) among the nations!
She who was queen among the provinces
    has now become a slave.(BN)

Bitterly she weeps(BO) at night,
    tears are on her cheeks.
Among all her lovers(BP)
    there is no one to comfort her.
All her friends have betrayed(BQ) her;
    they have become her enemies.(BR)

After affliction and harsh labor,
    Judah has gone into exile.(BS)
She dwells among the nations;
    she finds no resting place.(BT)
All who pursue her have overtaken her(BU)
    in the midst of her distress.

The roads to Zion mourn,(BV)
    for no one comes to her appointed festivals.
All her gateways are desolate,(BW)
    her priests groan,
her young women grieve,
    and she is in bitter anguish.(BX)

Her foes have become her masters;
    her enemies are at ease.
The Lord has brought her grief(BY)
    because of her many sins.(BZ)
Her children have gone into exile,(CA)
    captive before the foe.(CB)

All the splendor has departed
    from Daughter Zion.(CC)
Her princes are like deer
    that find no pasture;
in weakness they have fled(CD)
    before the pursuer.

In the days of her affliction and wandering
    Jerusalem remembers all the treasures
    that were hers in days of old.
When her people fell into enemy hands,
    there was no one to help her.(CE)
Her enemies looked at her
    and laughed(CF) at her destruction.

Jerusalem has sinned(CG) greatly
    and so has become unclean.(CH)
All who honored her despise her,
    for they have all seen her naked;(CI)
she herself groans(CJ)
    and turns away.

Her filthiness clung to her skirts;
    she did not consider her future.(CK)
Her fall(CL) was astounding;
    there was none to comfort(CM) her.
“Look, Lord, on my affliction,(CN)
    for the enemy has triumphed.”

10 The enemy laid hands
    on all her treasures;(CO)
she saw pagan nations
    enter her sanctuary(CP)
those you had forbidden(CQ)
    to enter your assembly.

11 All her people groan(CR)
    as they search for bread;(CS)
they barter their treasures for food
    to keep themselves alive.
“Look, Lord, and consider,
    for I am despised.”

12 “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?(CT)
    Look around and see.
Is any suffering like my suffering(CU)
    that was inflicted on me,
that the Lord brought on me
    in the day of his fierce anger?(CV)

13 “From on high he sent fire,
    sent it down into my bones.(CW)
He spread a net(CX) for my feet
    and turned me back.
He made me desolate,(CY)
    faint(CZ) all the day long.

14 “My sins have been bound into a yoke[h];(DA)
    by his hands they were woven together.
They have been hung on my neck,
    and the Lord has sapped my strength.
He has given me into the hands(DB)
    of those I cannot withstand.

15 “The Lord has rejected
    all the warriors in my midst;(DC)
he has summoned an army(DD) against me
    to[i] crush my young men.(DE)
In his winepress(DF) the Lord has trampled(DG)
    Virgin Daughter(DH) Judah.

16 “This is why I weep
    and my eyes overflow with tears.(DI)
No one is near to comfort(DJ) me,
    no one to restore my spirit.
My children are destitute
    because the enemy has prevailed.”(DK)

17 Zion stretches out her hands,(DL)
    but there is no one to comfort her.
The Lord has decreed for Jacob
    that his neighbors become his foes;(DM)
Jerusalem has become
    an unclean(DN) thing(DO) among them.

18 “The Lord is righteous,(DP)
    yet I rebelled(DQ) against his command.
Listen, all you peoples;
    look on my suffering.(DR)
My young men and young women
    have gone into exile.(DS)

19 “I called to my allies(DT)
    but they betrayed me.
My priests and my elders
    perished(DU) in the city
while they searched for food
    to keep themselves alive.

20 “See, Lord, how distressed(DV) I am!
    I am in torment(DW) within,
and in my heart I am disturbed,(DX)
    for I have been most rebellious.(DY)
Outside, the sword bereaves;
    inside, there is only death.(DZ)

21 “People have heard my groaning,(EA)
    but there is no one to comfort me.(EB)
All my enemies have heard of my distress;
    they rejoice(EC) at what you have done.
May you bring the day(ED) you have announced
    so they may become like me.

22 “Let all their wickedness come before you;
    deal with them
as you have dealt with me
    because of all my sins.(EE)
My groans(EF) are many
    and my heart is faint.”

[j]How the Lord has covered Daughter Zion
    with the cloud of his anger[k]!(EG)
He has hurled down the splendor of Israel
    from heaven to earth;
he has not remembered his footstool(EH)
    in the day of his anger.(EI)

Without pity(EJ) the Lord has swallowed(EK) up
    all the dwellings of Jacob;
in his wrath he has torn down
    the strongholds(EL) of Daughter Judah.
He has brought her kingdom and its princes
    down to the ground(EM) in dishonor.

In fierce anger he has cut off
    every horn[l][m](EN) of Israel.
He has withdrawn his right hand(EO)
    at the approach of the enemy.
He has burned in Jacob like a flaming fire
    that consumes everything around it.(EP)

Like an enemy he has strung his bow;(EQ)
    his right hand is ready.
Like a foe he has slain
    all who were pleasing to the eye;(ER)
he has poured out his wrath(ES) like fire(ET)
    on the tent(EU) of Daughter Zion.

The Lord is like an enemy;(EV)
    he has swallowed up Israel.
He has swallowed up all her palaces
    and destroyed her strongholds.(EW)
He has multiplied mourning and lamentation(EX)
    for Daughter Judah.(EY)

He has laid waste his dwelling like a garden;
    he has destroyed(EZ) his place of meeting.(FA)
The Lord has made Zion forget
    her appointed festivals and her Sabbaths;(FB)
in his fierce anger he has spurned
    both king and priest.(FC)

The Lord has rejected his altar
    and abandoned his sanctuary.(FD)
He has given the walls of her palaces(FE)
    into the hands of the enemy;
they have raised a shout in the house of the Lord
    as on the day of an appointed festival.(FF)

The Lord determined to tear down
    the wall around Daughter Zion.(FG)
He stretched out a measuring line(FH)
    and did not withhold his hand from destroying.
He made ramparts(FI) and walls lament;
    together they wasted away.(FJ)

Her gates(FK) have sunk into the ground;
    their bars(FL) he has broken and destroyed.
Her king and her princes are exiled(FM) among the nations,
    the law(FN) is no more,
and her prophets(FO) no longer find
    visions(FP) from the Lord.

10 The elders of Daughter Zion
    sit on the ground in silence;(FQ)
they have sprinkled dust(FR) on their heads(FS)
    and put on sackcloth.(FT)
The young women of Jerusalem
    have bowed their heads to the ground.(FU)

11 My eyes fail from weeping,(FV)
    I am in torment within(FW);
my heart(FX) is poured out(FY) on the ground
    because my people are destroyed,(FZ)
because children and infants faint(GA)
    in the streets of the city.

12 They say to their mothers,
    “Where is bread and wine?”(GB)
as they faint like the wounded
    in the streets of the city,
as their lives ebb away(GC)
    in their mothers’ arms.(GD)

13 What can I say for you?(GE)
    With what can I compare you,
    Daughter(GF) Jerusalem?
To what can I liken you,
    that I may comfort you,
    Virgin Daughter Zion?(GG)
Your wound is as deep as the sea.(GH)
    Who can heal you?

14 The visions of your prophets
    were false(GI) and worthless;
they did not expose your sin
    to ward off your captivity.(GJ)
The prophecies they gave you
    were false and misleading.(GK)

15 All who pass your way
    clap their hands at you;(GL)

    the perfection of beauty,(GP)
    the joy of the whole earth?”(GQ)

16 All your enemies open their mouths
    wide against you;(GR)
they scoff and gnash their teeth(GS)
    and say, “We have swallowed her up.(GT)
This is the day we have waited for;
    we have lived to see it.”(GU)

17 The Lord has done what he planned;
    he has fulfilled(GV) his word,
    which he decreed long ago.(GW)
He has overthrown you without pity,(GX)
    he has let the enemy gloat over you,(GY)
    he has exalted the horn[n] of your foes.(GZ)

18 The hearts of the people
    cry out to the Lord.(HA)
You walls of Daughter Zion,(HB)
    let your tears(HC) flow like a river
    day and night;(HD)
give yourself no relief,
    your eyes no rest.(HE)

19 Arise, cry out in the night,
    as the watches of the night begin;
pour out your heart(HF) like water
    in the presence of the Lord.(HG)
Lift up your hands(HH) to him
    for the lives of your children,
who faint(HI) from hunger
    at every street corner.

20 “Look, Lord, and consider:
    Whom have you ever treated like this?
Should women eat their offspring,(HJ)
    the children they have cared for?(HK)
Should priest and prophet be killed(HL)
    in the sanctuary of the Lord?(HM)

21 “Young and old lie together
    in the dust of the streets;
my young men and young women
    have fallen by the sword.(HN)
You have slain them in the day of your anger;
    you have slaughtered them without pity.(HO)

22 “As you summon to a feast day,
    so you summoned against me terrors(HP) on every side.
In the day of the Lord’s anger
    no one escaped(HQ) or survived;
those I cared for and reared(HR)
    my enemy has destroyed.”
