12 Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, 13 “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘I (A)cut a covenant with your fathers in the day that I (B)brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery, saying, 14 (C)At the end of seven years each of you shall let his Hebrew brother go who [a]has been sold to you and has served you six years, and you shall let him go to be free from you; but your fathers (D)did not obey Me or incline their ear to Me. 15 Although recently you had turned and (E)done what is right in My sight, each man proclaiming [b]release to his neighbor, and you had (F)cut a covenant before Me (G)in the house which is called by My name. 16 Yet you (H)turned and (I)profaned My name, and each man [c]returned to themselves his male slave and each man his female slave whom you had let go as free according to their desire, and you subdued them to be your male slaves and female slaves.”’

12 Then the Lord’s word came to Jeremiah: 13 The Lord, the God of Israel, proclaims: I made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 14 I said that every seventh year each of you must free any Hebrews who have been sold to you. After they have served you for six years, you must set them free. But your ancestors didn’t obey or pay any attention to me. 15 Recently you turned about and did what was right in my sight; each of you proclaimed liberty for the other and made a covenant before me in the temple that bears my name. 16 But then you went back on your word and made my name impure; each of you reclaimed the men and women you had set free and forced them to be your slaves again.
