14 Then Yahweh said to me, “The (A)prophets are prophesying lies in My name. (B)I have neither sent them nor commanded them nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a (C)vision of lies, divination, futility, and the deception of their own hearts. 15 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets who are prophesying in My name, although it was not I who sent them—yet they keep saying, ‘There will be no sword or famine in this land’—(D)by that sword and famine those prophets shall [a]meet their end! 16 The people also to whom they are prophesying will be (E)thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and there will be no one to (F)bury them—neither them, nor their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters—for I will (G)pour out their own evil on them.

17 And you will say this word to them,
(H)Let my eyes flow down with tears night and day,
And let them not cease,
For the virgin (I)daughter of my people has been shattered with a mighty shattering,
With a sorely (J)sick wound.
18 If I (K)go out to the field,
Behold, those [b]slain with the sword!
Or if I enter the city,
Behold, diseases of famine!
For (L)both prophet and priest
Have gone around as merchants in the land that they do not know.’”

14 Then the Lord said to me: The prophets are telling lies in my name. I haven’t sent them. I haven’t commanded them. I haven’t spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, worthless predictions, and deceit they have made up on their own. 15 Therefore, this is what the Lord proclaims concerning the prophets who are speaking in my name when I didn’t send them, and who are telling you that war or famine will never come to this land: Those very prophets will die in war and by famine! 16 And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown into the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and war. There will be no one to bury them or their wives and children. I will pour out on them their own wickedness.

17 So deliver this word to them:
My eyes well up with tears;
    I can’t stop weeping—day and night,
because my virgin daughter, my people,
        has suffered a crushing blow
        and is mortally wounded.
18 If I go into the fields,
I see only the slain in battle.
If I enter the city,
I see only those suffering from famine.
Even both prophet and priest
    wander about aimlessly in ignorance.
