12 Jeremiah started to leave Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to claim his portion there(A) among the people. 13 But when he was at the Benjamin Gate,(B) an officer of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, and he apprehended the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans.”

14 “That’s a lie,” Jeremiah replied. “I am not defecting to the Chaldeans!” Irijah would not listen to him but apprehended Jeremiah and took him to the officials.

12 Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property(A) among the people there. 13 But when he reached the Benjamin Gate,(B) the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, “You are deserting to the Babylonians!”(C)

14 “That’s not true!” Jeremiah said. “I am not deserting to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested(D) Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.
