8 »”En aquel tiempo —afirma el Señor—, se exhumarán de sus sepulcros los huesos de los reyes y de los oficiales de Judá, de los sacerdotes, de los profetas y de los habitantes de Jerusalén. 2 Quedarán expuestos al sol, a la luna y a todas las estrellas del cielo, a los que ellos amaron, sirvieron, consultaron y adoraron. No los recogerán ni los enterrarán; ¡como estiércol quedarán sobre la faz de la tierra! 3 En todos los lugares por donde yo disperse a los sobrevivientes de esta nación malvada, los que hayan quedado preferirán la muerte a la vida”, afirma el Señor de los Ejércitos.
Pecado y castigo
4 »Pero tú les advertirás que así dice el Señor:
»“Cuando los hombres caen,
¿acaso no se levantan?
Cuando uno se desvía,
¿acaso no vuelve al camino?
5 ¿Por qué entonces este pueblo se ha desviado?
¿Por qué persiste Jerusalén en su apostasía?
Se aferran al engaño
y no quieren volver a mí.
6 He escuchado con suma atención,
para ver si alguien habla con rectitud,
pero nadie se arrepiente de su maldad;
nadie reconoce el mal que ha hecho.
Todos siguen su loca carrera,
como caballos desbocados en combate.
7 Aun la cigüeña en el cielo
conoce sus estaciones;
la tórtola, la golondrina y la grulla
saben cuándo deben emigrar.
Pero mi pueblo no conoce
las exigencias del Señor.
8 »”¿Cómo se atreven a decir:
‘Somos sabios; la Ley del Señor nos apoya’,
si la pluma engañosa de los escribas
la ha falsificado?
9 Los sabios serán avergonzados,
serán atrapados y abatidos.
Si han rechazado la palabra del Señor,
¿qué sabiduría pueden tener?
10 Por eso entregaré sus mujeres a otros hombres
y sus campos a otros dueños.
Porque desde el más pequeño hasta el más grande,
todos codician ganancias injustas;
desde el profeta hasta el sacerdote,
todos practican el engaño.
11 Curan por encima la herida de mi pueblo
y les desean: ‘¡Paz, paz!’,
cuando en realidad no hay paz.
12 ¿Acaso se han avergonzado de la abominación que han cometido?
¡No, no se han avergonzado de nada
y ni siquiera saben lo que es la vergüenza!
Por eso, caerán con los que caigan;
cuando los castigue, serán derribados”,
dice el Señor.
13 »“Voy a arrancarlos por completo”,
afirma el Señor,
“no encuentro uvas en la viña
ni hay higos en la higuera;
sus hojas están marchitas.
¡Voy, pues, a quitarles
lo que les he dado!”».[a]
14 ¿Qué hacemos aquí sentados?
¡Vengan, y vámonos juntos a las ciudades fortificadas
para morir allí!
El Señor nuestro Dios nos está destruyendo.
Nos ha dado a beber agua envenenada,
porque hemos pecado contra él.
15 Esperábamos paz,
pero no llegó nada bueno.
Esperábamos un tiempo de salud,
pero solo nos llegó el terror.
16 Desde Dan se escucha
el resoplar de sus caballos;
cuando relinchan sus corceles,
tiembla toda la tierra.
Vienen a devorarse el país
y todo lo que hay en él,
la ciudad y todos sus habitantes.
17 «¡Miren! Estoy lanzando contra ustedes
serpientes venenosas que los morderán,
y contra ellas no hay encantamiento»,
afirma el Señor.
18 La aflicción me abruma;[b]
mi corazón desfallece.
19 El clamor de mi pueblo se levanta
y viene de una tierra lejana:
«¿Acaso no está el Señor en Sión?
¿No está allí su Rey?».
«¿Por qué me provocan con sus ídolos,
con sus dioses inútiles y extraños?».
20 «Pasó la cosecha,
se acabó el verano
y nosotros no hemos sido salvados».
21 Por la herida de mi pueblo estoy herido;
estoy de luto, el terror se apoderó de mí.
22 ¿No queda bálsamo en Galaad?
¿No queda allí médico alguno?
¿Por qué no se ha restaurado
la salud de mi pueblo?

8 Yahweh declares, “At that time the bones of the kings and the leaders of Judah, the bones of the priests and the prophets, and the bones of the others who lived in Jerusalem will be taken out of their graves. 2 They will be spread out and exposed to the sun, the moon, and all the stars in the sky. These are the things that they had loved, served, gone after, sought, and worshiped. Their bones will not be gathered or buried, but they will become manure on the ground.
3 “Then the few who remain from these wicked people will want to die rather than live where I will scatter them,” declares Yahweh Tsebaoth.
The Lord’s Judgment on Judah’s False Religion
4 “Say to them, ‘This is what Yahweh says:
When someone falls, he gets back up.
When someone turns away from me, he returns.
5 The people of Jerusalem turned away from me without ever returning.
They still cling to deceit.
They refuse to return.
6 I have paid attention and listened,
but they weren’t honest.
They don’t turn away from their wickedness and ask,
“What have we done?”
They go their own ways like horses charging into battle.
7 Even storks know when it’s time to return.
Mourning doves, swallows, and cranes know
when it’s time to migrate.
But my people don’t know
that I, Yahweh, am urging them to return.
8 “‘How can you say that you are wise
and that you have Yahweh’s teachings?
The scribes have used their pens to turn these teachings into lies.
9 Wise people are put to shame, confused, and trapped.
They have rejected the word of Yahweh.
They don’t really have any wisdom.
10 That is why I will give their wives to other men
and their fields to new owners.
All of them, from the least important to the most important,
are eager to make money dishonestly.
All of them, from prophets to priests, act deceitfully.
11 They treat my dear people’s wounds
as though they were not serious, saying,
“Everything is alright! Everything is alright!”
But it’s not alright.
12 Are they ashamed that they do disgusting things?
No, they’re not ashamed.
They don’t even know how to blush.
So they will die with those who die.
They will be brought down when I punish them,’” says Yahweh.
13 “‘I would have gathered their harvest,’” declares Yahweh,
“‘but there are no grapes on the vine.
There are no figs on the tree,
and the leaves have dried up.
What I have given them will be taken away.’”
14 Why are we just sitting here? Let’s get up!
Let’s go into the fortified cities and die there.
Yahweh our Elohim has condemned us to die.
He has given us poison to drink
because we have sinned against Yahweh.
15 We hoped for peace, but nothing good has happened.
We hoped for a time of healing, but there’s only terror.
16 The snorting of horses can be heard from Dan.
The neighing of stallions makes the whole land tremble.
They are coming to devour the land and everything in it,
the city and its people.
17 “I am going to send snakes among you,
vipers that can’t be charmed.
They will bite you,” declares Yahweh.
Jeremiah’s Grief over His People’s Punishment
18 Sorrow has overwhelmed me.
I am sick at heart!
19 The cry from my dear people comes from a distant land:
“Isn’t Yahweh in Zion?
Isn’t Zion’s king still there?”
They make me furious with their idols, with their foreign gods.
20 The harvest is past,
the summer has ended,
and we haven’t been saved.
21 I am crushed because my dear people have been crushed.
I mourn; terror grips me.
22 Isn’t there medicine in Gilead?
Aren’t there doctors there?
Then why hasn’t the health of my dear people been restored?
