so you are to go, and (A)on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the Lord's house you shall read the words of the Lord from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities.

(A)behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the Lord, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, (B)my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, (C)and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation. 10 Moreover, (D)I will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, (E)the grinding of the millstones and (F)the light of the lamp. 11 (G)This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and (H)these nations shall serve the king of Babylon (I)seventy years. 12 Then after (J)seventy years are completed, (K)I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, (L)the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the Lord, (M)making the land an everlasting waste. 13 I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written (N)in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. 14 (O)For many nations (P)and great kings shall make slaves even of them, (Q)and I will recompense them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”

The Cup of the Lord's Wrath

15 Thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: (R)“Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16 They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of (S)the sword that I am sending among them.”

17 So I took the cup from the Lord's hand, (T)and made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it: 18 (U)Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials, (V)to make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day; 19 (W)Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people, 20 and (X)all the mixed tribes among them; all the kings of (Y)the land of Uz and all the kings of (Z)the land of the Philistines ((AA)Ashkelon, (AB)Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of (AC)Ashdod); 21 (AD)Edom, (AE)Moab, and the sons of (AF)Ammon; 22 all the kings of (AG)Tyre, all the kings of (AH)Sidon, and the kings of the coastland across (AI)the sea; 23 (AJ)Dedan, (AK)Tema, (AL)Buz, and all who cut (AM)the corners of their hair; 24 all the (AN)kings of Arabia and all the kings of (AO)the mixed tribes who dwell in the desert; 25 all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of (AP)Elam, and all the kings of (AQ)Media; 26 all the kings of (AR)the north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of (AS)Babylon[a] shall drink.

27 “Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AT)Drink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of (AU)the sword that I am sending among you.’

28 “And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: (AV)You must drink! 29 For behold, (AW)I begin to work disaster at the city that is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, (AX)for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the Lord of hosts.’

The Scroll and the Lamb

Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne (A)a scroll written within and on the back, (B)sealed with seven seals. And (C)I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, (D)the Lion (E)of the tribe of Judah, (F)the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw (G)a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with (H)seven eyes, which are (I)the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. Judgment on the Philistines

47 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet (A)concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck down (B)Gaza.

“Thus says the Lord:
(C)Behold, waters are rising (D)out of the north,
    (E)and shall become an overflowing torrent;
they shall overflow (F)the land and all that fills it,
    the city and those who dwell in it.
Men shall cry out,
    and every inhabitant of the land shall wail.
At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his stallions,
    (G)at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of their wheels,
the fathers (H)look not back to their children,
    so feeble are their hands,
because of the day that is coming to destroy
    all (I)the Philistines,
to cut off from (J)Tyre and Sidon
    every helper that remains.
For the Lord is destroying the Philistines,
    (K)the remnant of the coastland of (L)Caphtor.
(M)Baldness has come upon Gaza;
    (N)Ashkelon has perished.
O remnant of their valley,
    (O)how long will you gash yourselves?
(P)Ah, sword of the Lord!
    How long till you are quiet?
Put yourself into your scabbard;
    rest and be still!
How can it[a] be quiet
    (Q)when the Lord has given it a charge?
Against (R)Ashkelon and against the seashore
    (S)he has appointed it.”

Faithless Israel Called to Repentance

The Lord said to me in the days of (E)King Josiah: “Have you seen what she did, that faithless one, Israel, (F)how she went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and there (G)played the whore? And I thought, ‘After she has done all this she will return to me,’ but she did not return, and her treacherous (H)sister Judah saw it. (K)Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went (L)and played the whore.
