³⁴ But they ^(A)set their abominations in ^[a]the house which is called by My name, to defile it.

³⁰ For the children of Judah have done evil in My sight,” says the Lord. ^(A)“They have set their abominations in the house which is called by My name, to ^[a]pollute it.

⁵ Then He said to me, “Son of man, lift your eyes now toward the north.” So I lifted my eyes toward the north, and there, north of the altar gate, was this image of jealousy in the entrance.

⁶ Furthermore He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great ^(A)abominations that the house of Israel commits here, to make Me go far away from My sanctuary? Now turn again, you will see greater abominations.” ⁷ So He brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, there was a hole in the wall. ⁸ Then He said to me, “Son of man, dig into the wall”; and when I dug into the wall, there was a door.

⁹ And He said to me, “Go in, and see the wicked abominations which they are doing there.” ¹⁰ So I went in and saw, and there—every ^(B)sort of ^(C)creeping thing, abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, ^[a]portrayed all around on the walls. ¹¹ And there stood before them ^(D)seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel, and in their midst stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan. Each man had a censer in his hand, and a thick cloud of incense went up. ¹² Then He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the room of his idols? For they say, ^(E)‘The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land.’ ”

¹³ And He said to me, “Turn again, and you will see greater abominations that they are doing.” ¹⁴ So He brought me to the door of the north gate of the Lord’s house; and to my dismay, women were sitting there weeping for ^[b]Tammuz.

¹⁵ Then He said to me, “Have you seen this, O son of man? Turn again, you will see greater abominations than these.” ¹⁶ So He brought me into the inner court of the Lord’s house; and there, at the door of the temple of the Lord, ^(F)between the porch and the altar, ^(G)were about twenty-five men ^(H)with their backs toward the temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east, and they were worshiping ^(I)the sun toward the east.

^4 (A)He also built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, ^(B)“In Jerusalem I will put My name.” ⁵ And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the ^(C)two courts of the house of the Lord. ^6 (D)Also he made his son pass through the fire, practiced ^(E)soothsaying, used witchcraft, and consulted spiritists and mediums. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. ⁷ He even set a carved image of ^[a]Asherah that he had made, in the ^[b]house of which the Lord had said to David and to Solomon his son, ^(F)“In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever;

¹⁵ He took away ^(A)the foreign gods and the idol from the house of the Lord, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the Lord and in Jerusalem; and he cast them out of the city.

⁴ He also built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, ^(A)“In Jerusalem shall My name be forever.” ⁵ And he built altars for all the host of heaven ^(B)in the two courts of the house of the Lord. ^6 (C)Also he caused his sons to pass through the fire in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom; he practiced ^(D)soothsaying, used witchcraft and sorcery, and ^(E)consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. ^7 (F)He even set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the ^[a]house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, ^(G)“In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever;

⁶ And he brought out the ^(A)wooden^[a] image from the house of the Lord, to the Brook Kidron outside Jerusalem, burned it at the Brook Kidron and ground it to ^(B)ashes, and threw its ashes on ^(C)the graves of the common people.
